    Notizen: Abstract Proton-induced x-ray studies of monazite grains from different occurrences show no evidence for primordial superheavy elements. It is demonstrated that the recently reported evidence for superheavy elements in monazite inclusions of biotite mica showing giant halo formation is not significant: the observed differences in the x-ray spectra of normal and giant halo inclusions are due to different backgrounds in the respective spectra. Moreover, it is shown that the 27.2 keV line tentatively interpreted as theL α1x-ray of elementZ=126 can be entirely attributed to the reaction140Ce(p,n γ)140Pr.

    Notizen: Abstract Low concentration equilibria of SO2 between air and water have been calculated for temperatures in the range 0 to 60°C and air concentrations of 2 ppb to 100 ppm incorporating the best currently available theory to define this process. The data showed negative, non-regular deviations of from less than 1 to about 12% lower than the limited experimental aqueous concentration data available at these levels. Log-log plots of these equilibrium data were linear over a four decade concentration span in air and provided a format which may be readily interpolated for data access. Linear plots of the fraction of the total aqueous SO2 present as unreacted SO2 presented here for the first time, show a more marked rise with concentration than was expected, which is used to qualitatively explain biological and corrosion activity of dilute solutions of SO2.

    Notizen: Abstract The absence of any torsional fatigue-test data on currently used titanium-alloy spring wire along with inconsistent fatigue-test data derived from earlier test programs prompted this investigation. The torsional fatigue testing was performed on straight lengths of 13V−11Cr−3Al titanium-alloy spring wire in diameters of 0.148 in. (0.376 cm), 0.225 in. (0.572 cm) and 0.374 in. (0.950 cm) considered as representative. A second material selected as a possible alternate for 13V−11Cr−3Al spring was 3Al−8V−6Cr−4Mo−4Zr which was tested in diameters of 0.225 in. (0.572 cm) and 0.376 in. (0.955 cm). Testing as straight-wire lengths eliminated the manufacturing variables introduced by fabricating a helical-spring geometry. Two methods were considered for improving fatigue life, namely abrasive cleaning and shot peening. At a torsional stress of 100 ksi (689.5 MPa), the test data indicate that an improvement in fatigue life of at least one order of magnitude may be realized by shot peening 0.225-in. (0.572-cm)-diam 13V−11Cr−3Al wire to an intensity of 0.015A. A similar improvement of fatigue life may be gained by shot peening 0.148-in. (0.376-cm)-diam wire to a similar intensity. A substantial fatigue-life improvement was obtained by an obrasive-cleaning operation on all wire diameters tested. The fatigue life of the 3Al−8V−6Cr−4Mo−4Zr titanium-alloy wire in the cold-worked and aged condition was lower at all stress levels and diameters tested than for similar diameters of 13V−11Cr−3Al titanium-alloy wire.

L'analyse porte sur la teneur en acides gras totaux des spores appartenant à trois espèces différentes parasitant la même espèce-hôte. Les différences dans les résultats des analyses obtenues pour chaque espèce méritent d'être soulignées et également l'abondance du 18:2ω6 chezThelohania maenadis (43%). Les variations observées dans les compositions des acides gras du muscle et de l'hémolymphe provenant deCarcinus mediterraneus sain et parasité parThelohania maenadis ne permettent pas de mettre en évidence une action importante du parasite sur le métabolisme lipidique de l'hôte.
    Notizen: Abstract This study concerns the first investigation of the lipid composition of Microsporidia. Analysis of fatty acids in spores from three species (Thelohania maenadis, Ameson (Nosema) pulvis, andOrmieresia carcini), which are muscular parasites of the same host-species,Carcinus mediterraneus (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) has revealed a number of important differences with respect to the relative amounts of fatty acids. Especially interesting is the case of linoleic acid (C 18:2ω6) which reaches 43% of the total fatty acids inT. maenadis, but only about 1% in the other species (Table 1). The fatty acid pattern is different in the three species, but certain acids predominate: linoleic (C 18:2ω6) and oleic acids (C 18:1) inT. maenadis, palmitic (C 16:0) and oleic acids (C 18:1) in the other species. Disturbances in the fatty acids of the host as a result of muscular microsporidiosis were also investigated. InC. mediterraneus, hemolymph and muscular fatty acid levels were not found to be notably modified (Table 2).

    Notizen: The requirements of thermodynamic data predictors in process simulation applications are especially rigorous. The calculation of vapor and liquid density by the Benedict, Webb, Rubin, Starling equation of state has been reformulated to better satisfy these requirements; the necessary mathematical and programming techniques have been developed and are presented here. The resulting algorithm is believed superior for process simulation purposes.

    Notizen: The in vivo liver metabolism of cannabinol has been studied in the mouse and rat by combined gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Cannabinol glucuronide was the major metabolite of cannabinol in the mouse and was accompanied by relatively large amounts of 7-hydroxycannabinol, cannabinol-7-oic acid and their corresponding glucuronide conjugates. Lower concentrations of glucuronides were found in the rat. Two series of disubstituted metabolites were found containing either a 7-hydroxyl or a 7-carboxylic acid group and a second hydroxyl group in the 1″-4″ positions of the sidechain. These were of low concentration in the mouse but higher in the rat; 1″-hydroxy metabolites were particularly abundant in the latter species. Also found in the rat livers were small amounts of sidechain monohydroxy metabolites and larger quantities of 4″,5″-bisnorcannabinol-3″-oic acid; these were absent in the mouse. The metabolites were identified using the trimethylsilyl (TMS),[2H9]TMS and methyl ester-TMS derivatives, and by reduction of acid metabolites with lithium aluminium deuteride to the corresponding alcohols.

    Notizen: Following artificial ulceration of the guinea pig bladder epithelium, study by light microscopy showed that mitotic activity occurs within 24 hours in the basal layer of the remaining epithelium, which leads to thickening, disorganization and cell shedding. At the ulcer margin, the epithelium forms a rolled edge, from the extremity of which a two-layered sheet of flat cells grows over the edematous ulcer bed, and the ulcer site is protected during dilation of the bladder by localized muscle spasm. Healing is effected within about one week, as the mitotic activity declines. Organization of the new epithelium commences at the periphery and the cells acquire glycogen and alkaline phosphatase. Study by SEM, which included normal bladders, confirmed that new epithelium spreads from a rolled epithelial edge, and also showed that cells undergoing rejection have globular profiles with surface microvilli. The immature epithelial cells are markedly distorted from mutual pressure during migration and their surfaces show only short microvilli. Ulcers heal after four to seven days, depending on size, and the new cells rapidly assume the pentagonal and hexagonal outlines and the reticular pattern of surface ridges, characteristic of mature surface cells. The ridges apparently develop by fusion of rows of microvilli. By the tenth day it is difficult to identify the original ulcer site.
