Notes: Abstract By means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the influence of the red tide species Chattonella antiqua was examined with respect to the surface ultrastructures of chloride cells of the yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata. Conspicuous ultrastructural alterations occurred on the apical surface of these cells. The majority of chloride cells in the control gills showed an apical surface with numerous cellular extensions, while more than half the chloride cells affected by red tide organisms exhibited an apical surface with fewer and smaller extensions, a wrinkled apical surface, or a protruded apical surface. These ultrastructural alterations of chloride cell surface may be due to the partial disturbance of salinity by C. antiqua, and reflect the changes of the ion-transport function in yellowtail gills exposed to red tide water.

Notes: Abstract The tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation of yttria partially stabilized zirconia caused by annealing in hot water was investigated in the temperature range 80 to 200° C using sintered bodies in zirconia containing 2, 3 and 4 mol % Y2O3. Three approaches, alloying ZrO2(Y2O3) with 0 to 20wt% CeO2, dispersing 0 to 40 wt % Al2O3 into ZrO2(Y2O3) ceramics and decreasing the grain size of zirconia, were examined to inhibit the tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation. The amount of monoclinic phase formed decreased with increasing concentrations of CeO2 alloyed and Al2O3 dispersed, and with decreasing grain size of zirconia.

Notes: Summary Metabolic differences in the formation of guaiacyl and syringyl lignins were explained in terms of the different functions of O-methyltransferases and reducing enzymes which participate in methylation and reduction of the hydroxycinnamic acid intermediates in the biosynthetic pathway of these two types of lignins. Sinapyl alcohol was dehydrogenated with peroxidase and H2O2 under various reaction conditions. Chemical properties of the dehydrogenation polymers (DHPs) formed were characterized, and the possible occurrence of syringyl lignin in hardwood was discussed. DHP and dimers of p-coumaryl alcohol were also characterized and discussed in relation to the formation of grass lignin which contains p-hydroxyphenyl propane as an additional lignin monomer.

Notes: Abstract The tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation of yttria partially stabilized zirconia by low temperature annealing in air was investigated in the temperature range 100 to 650° C using a sintered body of zirconia containing 2 to 4 mol% Y2O3. The amount of monoclinic phase formed was maximum at about 200° C. Both the decrease in grain size and increase in the yttria concentration were effective in decreasing the critical temperature below which the monoclinic phase was formed. The relationship between the critical temperature (T c) and the grain size was experimentally determined.
