    Notes: The effect of electrically evoked dendritic vasopressin release on noradrenaline release into the hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus was assessed by in vivo microdialysis in conjunction with high pressure liquid chromatography and electrochemical detection. Electrical activation of magnocellular supraoptic neurones by stimulation of their axons at the level of the neural lobe significantly increased noradrenaline release into the nucleus (2.5-fold, P〈0.03). This increase was completely blocked by administration of a nonpeptide vasopressin V1a receptor antagonist via the microdialysis probe. These data suggest that dendritically released vasopressin facilitates noradrenaline release into the hypothalamic nucleus.

    Notes: Aim: To investigate the EP receptor subtype involved in the gastroprotective action of prostaglandin (PG) E2 using various EP receptor agonists in rats, and using knockout mice lacking EP1 or EP3 receptors. Methods: Male SD rats and C57BL/6 mice were used after an 18-h fast. Gastric lesions were induced by oral administration of HCl/ethanol (150 m m HCl in 60% ethanol). Rats were given various EP agonists i.v. 10 min before HCl/ethanol: PGE2, sulprostone (EP1/EP3 agonist), butaprost (EP2 agonist), 17-phenyl-ω-trinorPGE2 (17-phenylPGE2: EP1 agonist), ONO-NT012 (EP3 agonist) and 11-deoxyPGE1 (EP3/EP4 agonist). In a separate study, the effect of PGE2 on HCl/ethanol lesions was examined in EP1- and EP3-receptor knockout mice. Results: Gastric lesions induced by HCl/ethanol were dose dependently prevented by PGE2; this effect was mimicked by sulprostone and 17-phenylPGE2 and was significantly antagonized by ONO-AE-829, an EP1 antagonist. Neither butaprost, ONO-NT012 nor 11-deoxyPGE1 exhibited any protective activity against HCl/ethanol-induced gastric lesions. PGE2 caused an inhibition of gastric motility as well as an increase of mucosal blood flow and mucus secretion, the effects being mimicked by prostanoids activating EP1 receptors, EP2/EP3/EP4 receptors and EP4 receptors, respectively. On the other hand, although HCl/ethanol caused similar damage in both wild-type mice and knockout mice lacking EP1 or EP3 receptors, the cytoprotective action of PGE2 observed in wild-type and EP3-receptor knockout mice totally disappeared in mice lacking EP1 receptors. Conclusion: The gastric cytoprotective action of PGE2 is mediated by activation of EP1 receptors. This effect may be functionally associated with inhibition of gastric motility but not with increased mucosal blood flow or mucus secretion.

    Notes: Ordered and disordered states of potassium ions in (111) tunnels in the structure of cubic KSbO3 have been studied by high-resolution electron microscopy. N-beam calculations for the images of both the ordered and disordered states reproduce well the observed images. The disordered state changes into the ordered state under electron irradiation during the observations. Electron diffraction from the specimens and optical diffraction from the images show diffuse spots due to small domains of the long-range-ordered state, but no other diffuse scattering due to short-range order has been observed.

    Notes: The crystal structures of phases, previously designated as 11L, 9L and 16L, which were commonly found in the title systems are suggested from their high-resolution two-dimensional electron-microscope images. Two types of blocks are found which are composed of five and six layers of pentavalent-metal oxide octahedra and are closely related to the pyrochlore structure. The 11L structure is of rhombohedral {\tt ABCABC} stacking of the former type of block, and the 9L structure is of hexagonal {\tt B}_{0}{\tt A}_{0}^{\prime}{\tt B}_{0}{\tt A}_{0}^{\prime} stacking of the latter type of block. The 16L structure is found to be an alternate stacking of the two types of blocks. The method of stacking of the blocks is the same for the three structures and is found to be favorable from the point of view of local charge balance.

    Notes: In part I, the preceding paper, structural models were proposed on the basis of high-resolution electron microscopy for phases previously designated as 11L, 9L and 16L, which were found to exist in the title systems. Two types of blocks were found, which are composed of five and six layers of octahedra. In the present paper, various intergrowth phases which are composed of the two types of blocks are described. A new notation is proposed to denote these intergrowth phases as well as the 11L, 9L and 16L structures. Two-dimensional ordering of pentavalent ions in the six-layer block is found, giving rise to diffuse scattering in electron diffraction patterns. Two-dimensional images, calculated on the basis of the proposed model, are found to reproduce the observed images.

    Notes: Abstract Pregnant mice were injected intraperitoneally with cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) on days 13.5 and 14.5 of pregnancy. The brains of their offspring were studied histologically and histochemically. In addition to dysgenic microcephaly, nodular structures consisting of cells with a relatively homogeneous morphology were observed in the depths of the cerebral cortex. The cell clusters were first seen around postnatal day 4, and had a cellular continuity with the disarrayed pyramidal cell layer in the CA1 region of the hippocampus. Golgi-Cox staining showed a number of pyramidal-shaped cells in the clusters. Morphologically, they resembled the pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus. Immunohistochemical examination, using anti-serotonin or anti-tyrosine hydroxylase antibodies, also indicated similarities between the cell clusters and the pyramidal cell layer. It is, therefore, proposed that the cell clusters consisted of heterotopic pyramidal cells of the hippocampus. A few synaptic structures could already be detected in the heterotopic cell clusters on postnatal day 3 by electron microscopy. This early establishment of synaptic contact with related neurons may have caused the heterotopic localization of the pyramidal cells.

    Notes: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the influence of molecular weight distribution on stretchability and thread nonuniformity of high-density polyethylene monofilaments. For the study, a melt-spinning/multistage stretching device was constructed, and the monofilaments were extruded first into a quench tank and subsequently stretched twice in an annealing bath. Processing variables investigated were (a) the extrusion temperature, (b) the shear rate in the spinnerette hole, (c) the air-gap distance, (d) the annealing bath temperature, (e) the take-up speed at the first-stage stretching, and (f) the take-up speed at the second-stage stretching. Fiber samples were collected at each stage of stretching, namely, (a) as melt-spun, (b) after the first-stage stretching, and (c) after the second-stage stretching. The maximum stretch rate at which thread breakage occurs was determined at the first-and second-stage stretching in the annealing bath. The melt-spun materials were three different grades of Mitsui Petrochemicals high-density polyethylene and two different grades of Union Carbide high-density polyethylene. Also melt spun were blends of two Mitsui polyethylenes and the two Union Carbide polyethylenes. An attempt was made (a) to correlate stretchability with the molecular weight distribution of the high-density polyethylene; (b) to identify the influence of spinning conditions on stretchability for a given polymer; (c) to correlate the variations of the fiber diameter with the molecular weight distribution and spinning conditions, and (d) to correlate the stretchability of a blend system with blending ratio. tensile properties (the tensile strength at the yield point, tensile elastic modulus, and percent elongation at break) were determined for all fiber samples collected, using the Instron tensile tester. For some fiber samples of special interest, selected on the basis of the spinning experiment results, wide-angle x-ray diffraction measurements were taken to determine the molecular orientation in a filament.
