    Notizen: We have measured the Raman spectra of heavily carbon doped (p〉1019 cm−3) GaSb and GaAsSb. A local vibrational mode (LVM) due to carbon residing on group-V lattice sites was observed at 540 cm−1 for GaSb and 568 cm−1 for GaAs0.44Sb0.56. A gap mode at 164 cm−1 was observed for GaSb. The frequency of the LVM as well as the gap mode is in quantitative agreement with recent theoretical predictions. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Rheological properties of cooked noodles made on a small-scale laboratory sheeting machine developed at the Cereal Research Centre were strongly correlated with the same properties of noodles made on a pilot noodle sheeting machine. Values obtained from both machines were evaluated against 22 laboratory tests used in our breeding program. For example, cooked noodle viscoelasticity (r=0.89, P 〈 0.01) and cooked noodle cutting force (r = 0.79, P 〈 0.01) were similar. Cooked noodle viscoelasticity of fresh noodles made on the laboratory machine correlated significantly (P 〈 0.05) with 17 of the tests and cooked noodle cutting force correlated significantly with 18 tests. Cooked noodle viscoelasticity of dried noodles made with the pilot plant noodle machine had significant correlations (P 〈 0.05) with only 14 of the tests and cooked noodle cutting force had significant correlations with 15 tests. The pilot plant machine requires a minimum of 500 g for one sample, while the small-scale sheeting machine requires only 5-10 g of flour.

    Notizen: Broccoli was treated at 5°C with 20, 30 and 40% CO2 for 3 and 6 days soon after harvest, and then transferred to storage in air at 5°C. CO2 injury was severe in samples treated with 40% CO2 for 6 days. Offensive odor and flavor also developed by the end of 6 days' treatment with 30% CO2 but dissipated when the broccoli was transferred to air. CO2 delayed yellowing and loss of both chlorophyll and ascorbic acid, and retarded ethylene production. Except at the level that was injurious to the tissue, CO2 retarded mold growth and had no appreciable effect on compactness, turgor, and opening of the florets.

    Notizen: Abstract In order to develop an analytical method for quantifying the plastic-blunting behaviour of a short crack embedded in a notch plastic zone, the perturbation solution of He and Hutchinson is extended to include the effect of strain gradient. An edge-cracked plate subjected to a linearly varying remote strain is considered in this work to simulate the plastic deformation associated with a small crack at a notch root. The strain hardening of the material is assumed to obey a power-law. Comparison with finite-element (FE) computations demonstrates that this perturbation solution provides accurate values for the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) under gross-yielding conditions for a range of hardening parameters.

    Notizen: Abstract  In situ scanning electron microscope observations of short crack growth in both a poly-crystal and a single-crystal alloy revealed that fatigue cracks may grow in a shear decohesion mode over a length that is several times the grain size, far beyond the conventional stage I regime. In the poly-crystal aluminium alloy 2024-T351, fatigue cracks were found to continue to grow along one shear band even after two mutually perpendicular shear bands had formed at the crack tip. For the single-crystal alloy specimen with the loading axis being nearly perpendicular to its main shear plane, mode I fatigue cracks were found to grow along the shear band. These two types of fatigue crack growth pose a significant challenge to the existing fatigue crack growth correlating parameters that are based on crack-tip opening displacement. In particular, it has been found that the cyclic crack-tip opening displacement, which accounts for both large-scale yielding and the lack of plasticity-induced crack closure, is unable to unify the growth rates of short and long cracks in aluminium 2024-T351, suggesting a possible dependence of crack growth threshold on crack length.

    Notizen: Abstract  This paper presents computational and theoretical investigations of the plasticity-induced crack-closure of a plane-strain crack under large-scale yielding conditions. Solutions of the crack-tip opening displacements for a stationary crack and a growing fatigue crack have been obtained using the finite element method. The self-similar crack-closure model has been extended to the plane strain case by introducing two plastic constraint factors: one for tension yielding and the other for compression yielding. These two plastic constraint factors are identified by matching the model predictions with the computational results. It is shown that the first constraint factor decreases rapidly with the applied stress while the second constraint factor is approximately equal to unity. The findings of this study allow the cohesive-zone based crack-closure model to be extended to plane-strain cracks, especially under large-scale yielding conditions.
