Notes: Loratadine is a new non-sedating antihistamine. The present studies compared loratadine and terfenadine, another non-sedating antihistamine, for their ability to inhibit the bronchial response to histamine and other autacoids which have been implicated as contributing to the symptoms of an allergic reaction. In addition, the two antihistamines were evaluated in models of immunologically mediated allergic reactions. Loratadine is a more potent inhibitor of histamine-induced bronchospasm in guinea pigs than is terfenadine. Both antihistamines exhibit marked antiserotonin activity at doses 10 times their antihistamine ED50 values. In contrast, loratadine and terfenadine produce little or no inhibition of the bronchial responses to methacholine, leukotriene C4 or platelet-activating factor. An allergic bronchospasm in guinea pigs is inhibited by loratadine (ED50= 0.40 mg/kg, p.o.) and terfenadine (ED50= 1.7 mg/kg, p.o.). The bronchospasm associated with allergic anaphylaxis in rats is significantly inhibited by 10 mg/kg, p.o. loratadine and 30 mg/kg, p.o. terfenadine. Loratadine exhibits antiallergy activity in vitro. At micromolar concentrations, loratadine inhibits the release of histamine from Con A and A23187-stimulated rat peritoneal mast cells and the release of histamine and leukotrine C4 from a Con A-stimulated cloned murine mast cell line

Notes: Summary Direct observations on the feeding behavior of insect herbivores are uncommon, but important. The important aspects of host-plant selection by phytophagous insects that have been revealed by such observations are the role of chemicals in the leaf surface, and learning. There are few detailed reports of behavior at the leaf surface, but these indicate that many, if not all, insects exhibit behavior pattenrs that can be interpreted as an examination of the quality of the surface and acceptance or rejection may follow without further testing. A number of experiments show that chemicals from the leaf surface commonly contribute to the acceptability or otherwise of a plant and in most cases so far the active chemicals are of widespread occurrence, not having a specific association with the host plant. Some experiments show that the association between surface chemicals and plant palatability is learned, but in other cases there is evidence of an innate response. Habituation to deterrent chemicals has been demonstrated in the laboratory, but not in the field. Food aversion learning also occurs and may be important in dietary switching by polyphagous insects.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Titan-Ferrocolumbit ist ein seltenes Akzessorium in den Spodumenpegmatiten der Weinebene, Kärnten, Österreich.
Notes: Summary Titanian ferrocolumbite is a rare accessory mineral in the spodumene-bearing pegmatites at Weinebene, Carinthia, Austria. It contains abundant exsolved niobian rutile and scarce inclusions of cassiterite that may be primary. The titanian ferrocolumbite is relatively homogeneous with Mn/(Mn + Fe) 0.24–0.33, Ta/(Ta + Nb) 0.09–0.13 (atomic ratios) and 0.47–0.88 Ti per 12 cations (2.7–5.0 wt.% TiO2). Natural specimens are considerably disordered but become more ordered on heating. Niobian rutile has Mn/(Mn + Fe) 0.00–0.04 and Ta/(Ta + Nb) 0.26–0.38; it concentrates Fe, Ta, Ti and Sn relative to the Mn- and Nb-enriched ferrocolumbite. The overall scarcity of Nb, Ta-oxide minerals in the spodumene-bearing pegmatites of southern Ostalpen conforms to their general features ranking them with the albite-spodumene type of rare-element pegmatites.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In einem Pegmatit von Spittal a.d.
Notes: Summary Intimate intergrowths of ferrotantalite and ferrotapiolite occur in a pegmatite in Spittal a.d. Drau, Carinthia. They are associated with muscovite, albite, smoky quartz, cassiterite, and microscopic uranmicrolite, zircon and uraninite. An assemblage of secondary uranium minerals is also present, generated by extensive alteration and leaching of the uranmicrolite and zircon. Textures of the ferrotantalite-ferrotapiolite intergrowths suggest considerable recrystallization that obliterated most of their primary features; neither coprecipitation nor exsolution can be recognized with certainty. Despite intersecting tielines indicating disequilibrium, the ferrotantalite and ferrotapiolite compositions show very restricted ranges (Mn/(Mn + Fe) 0.08–0.11, Ta/(Ta + Nb) 0.53–0.57 for ferrotantalite, and 0.01–0.04, 0.84–0.89 for ferrotapiolite, respectively), particularly in comparison with compositions from other localities featuring primary textures. A degree of compositional equilibration could have been attained during recrystallization. This process may also explain the high level of structural order characterizing both minerals; they are considerably disordered in other localities. Extensive deformation typical of pegmatites in the southern Ostalpen in general, and specifically of the Spittal pegmatite, is probably responsible for the recrystallization phenomena in the Ta, Nb, Sn-bearing mineral assemblage.

Notes: Abstract Liver iron concentrations were determined in 60 alcoholics with liver disease of varying severity, 15 patients with untreated idiopathic hemochromatosis, and 16 control subjects with biliary tract disease. Mean liver iron concentrations (μg/100 mg dry weight) were significantly greater in the alcoholics (156.4±7.8 (sem);P〈0.05) and in patients with idiopathic hemochromatosis (2094.5±230.7;P〈0.01) than in control subjects (53.0±7.0). Liver iron concentrations of 〉140 μg/100 mg were found in 17 alcoholics (29%) and in all 15 patients with idiopathic hemochromatosis. Liver iron concentrations 〉1000 μg/100 mg were found in all patients with idiopathic hemochromatosis but in none of the alcoholics. In the alcoholics no relationship existed between liver iron concentrations and the amount of alcohol consumed daily, the length of the drinking history, the amount of beverage iron consumed daily, or the severity of the liver disease. Serum ferritin concentrations reflected iron stores in patients with hemochromatosis and in alcoholics with minimal liver disease. However, in alcoholics with significant liver disease serum ferritin concentrations did not reflect iron stores accurately, although with normal values iron overload is unlikely. Serum iron concentration and percentage saturation of total iron-binding capacity were of little value in assessing iron status in either alcoholics or patients with hemochromatosis. Measurement of the liver iron concentration clearly differentiates between alcoholics with significant siderosis and patients with idiopathic hemochromatosis.

Notes: Abstract Total ferritin concentration was measured in sera of 30 patients with primary liver cell cancer (PLCC) and 33 patients with cirrhosis and compared with serum alpha-fetoprotein levels as a diagnostic marker of PLCC. Serum ferritin concentration was raised in 19 patients (63%) with PLCC and 11 patients (33%) with cirrhosis. The median level was significantly higher (P〈0.001) in the PLCC group (560 μg/liter) than in the cirrhotic group (137 μg/liter), although there was considerable overlap. Serum ferritin was posititively correlated with serum aminotransferase levels in the cirrhotic patients (r=0.53,P〈0.001), reflecting hepatic necrosis, but not in the PLCC patients. The concentration of ferritin binding to concanavalin A was measured in the sera of patients with elevated total serum ferritin. Although the proportion of bound ferritin was decreased in the majority of PLCC sera compared to controls (P〈0.001), there was overlap with the cirrhotic group, making it unlikely that this assay is useful in distinguishing a tumor-specific isoferritin. Serum alpha-fetoprotein levels were elevated in 21 patients (70%) with PLCC and proved to be a highly sensitive and specific test for PLCC. There was no relationship between the alpha-fetoprotein and serum ferritin concentrations. Serum ferritin is inferior to alpha-fetoprotein as an initial screening test for PLCC, but in alpha-fetoprotein-negative patients serum ferritin may have a role in monitoring therapy. Patients with cirrhosis with normal serum alpha-fetoprotein and ferritin concentrations are very unlikely to have PLCC.

Notes: Abstract Freeze-fracture electron microscopy of propane-jet-frozen samples has been employed to investigate vesicle-mediated secretion and membrane recycling events in carrot (Daucus carota L.) and sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) suspension-culture cells. Stabilization of the cells by means of ultrarapid freezing has enabled us to preserve the cells in a turgid state and to visualize new intermediate membrane configurations related to these events. Indeed, many of the observed membrane configurations, such as flattened membrane vesicles with slit-shaped membrane fusion sites and horseshoe-shaped membrane infoldings, appear to result from the action of turgor forces on the plasma membrane. Individual cells exhibited great variations in numbers and types of membrane configurations postulated to be related to secretion and membrane-recycling events. In the majority of cells, the different membrane profiles displayed a patchy distribution, and within each patch the membrane configurations tended to be of the same stage. This result indicates that secretory events are triggered in domains measuring from 0.1 to about 10 μm in diameter. Based on an extensive analysis of the different membrane configurations seen in our samples, we have formulated the following model of vesicle-mediated secretion in plant cells: Fusion of a secretory vesicle with the plasma membrane leads to the formation of a single, narrow-necked pore that increases in diameter up to about 60 nm. During discharge, the vesicle is flattened, forming a disc-shaped structure perpendicular to the plane of the plasma membrane. As the vesicle is flattened, the pore is converted to a slit, the maximum length of which coincides with the diameter of the flattened vesicle. The flattened vesicle then tips over and concomitantly the plasma-membrane slit becomes curved into a horseshoe-shaped configuration as it extends along the outer margins of the tipped-over vesicle. Some coated pits are present interspersed between the above-mentioned structures, but their numbers appear insufficient to account for an exclusively endocytotic mechanism of membrane recycling. Instead, our micrographs are more consistent with a mixed mode of recycling of membrane components to the cortical endoplamic reticulum and to Golgi cisternae that involves both internalization of membrane by endocytosis and of individual lippid molecules by unknown mechanisms (lipid exchange proteins?). To this end, overall flattening out of the horseshoe-shaped membrane infoldings is accompanied by a retraction and reduction in size of their central, tongue-like structure.

Notes: Abstract Ethyl nicotinate was found to be a potent attractant forThrips obscuratus in peaches and apricots. The male-to-female ratio in traps was 1∶8. The chemical was more attractive than ripe fruit, with peak catches at harvest. Season-long trapping showed the efficiency of the chemical compared to unbaited traps. The chemical remained attractive for at least 2 weeks when 50 μl were placed in open 2-ml vial caps. Various pyralids, geometrids (Lepidoptera), and chironomids (Diptera) were also attracted in low numbers to ethyl nicotinate.
