Notes: The usual powder diffraction technique needs about one hour for the registration of a pattern with either a Guinier camera or a powder diffractometer. This is a long time compared to the time of most chemical reactions and phase transitions. Quite recently the recording time has been reduced by using position-sensitive detectors and rotating-anode X-ray sources, but the registration time is still about one minute. With a Guinier diffractometer in front of a synchrotron-radiation source a time resolution of 300 μs can be achieved.

Notes: Summary Pharmacokinetic studies of 1,3,3,5,5 pentakis (aciridino)-1λ6,2,4,6,3λ5,5λ5 thiatriazadiphosphorine-1-oxide (‘SOAz’), a new antineoplastic agent containing an inorganic ring system and five aziridino groups, were performed in six patients who took part in a phase I clinical trial of the agent. The drug was administered as a rapid IV infusion. Serum decay curves could be fitted to an open two-compartment model of drug disappearance. After a short initial phase with a t1/2 (±SD) of 7.8±4.2 min a terminal phase with a dose-independent half-life of 203±17 min occurred. The coefficient of apparent distribution was 0.71±0.13. The renal clearance was 75±11 ml/min and the total body clearance 162±23 ml/min. A percentage of 46.5±6.6 of the administered drug could be recovered unchanged in the urine within 24 h. It is concluded that in view of concentrations known to be effective in vitro, administration in large single doses may be advantageous. Dose adjustments should be made for patients with impaired renal function.

Notes: Abstract Comparison of modern submarine fans and ancient turbidite sequences is still in its infancy, mainly because of the incompatibility of study approaches. Research on modern fan systems mainly deals with morphologic aspects and surficial sediments, while observations on ancient turbidite formations are mostly directed to vertical sequences. The lack of a common data set also results from different scales of observation. To review the current status of modern and ancient turbidite research, an international group of specialists formed COMFAN (Committee on Fans) and met in September 1982 at the Gulf Research and Development Company research facilities in Pennsylvania.

Notes: Abstract The Mississippi Fan is a Quarternary accumulation composed of more than seven elongated fan lobes. Isopach and structure maps show frequent shifting of these lobes. The Mississippi Canyon, formed by retrogressive slumping, connects to the youngest fan lobe. The upper fan-lobe is characterized by a large, incised, partially infilled, leveed channel. The middle fan-lobe is aggradational, convex in cross section, with a channel-levee complex on its apex. The lower fan-lobe contains a recently active small channel and several abandoned ones. Depositional patterns can be explained by several processes: “fluvial,” debris flows, and turbidity currents.

Notes: Abstract The genetic control of natural resistance in vivo to four natural killer (NK) cell-resistant H-2 homozygous lymphoid tumor cell lines was investigated by following the survival and organ distribution of cells prelabeled with radioactive iododeoxyuridine. Backcross mice derived from DBA/2J and CBA/J parents were injected with H-2 dtumor cells and tumor cell elimination was lowest in H-2 dhomozygotes. Natural killer cell activity was also reduced in mice with the H-2 dhaplotype, but no direct correlation between NK cell levels against YAC-1 or SL2-5 lymphoma cells and natural resistance in vivo was demonstrable. Analysis of 23 BXD recombinant inbred strains indicated that natural resistance to H-2 dtumors was restricted to H-2 bstrains. There was no direct association of NK cell activity with H-2 type in the BXD strains and NK cell levels did not correlate with tumor survival in vivo. By comparing natural resistance to H-2 dand H-2 btumors in DBA/2, C57BL/6, B6D2F1, and B10.D2 mice we found that H-2 nonidentity between the tumor and the host, rather than the host H-2 haplotype, determined whether natural resistance occurred. Again, NK cell activity against YAC-1 cells was not predictive of tumor survival in these strains. These results provide genetic evidence that NK cells alone cannot account for natural resistance to H-2 nonidentical cells of hemopoietic origin.
