    Notes: We report field-effect measurements of the density-of-states (DOS) distribution in the last-deposited surface of undoped glow-discharge a-(Si,Ge):H alloy films containing up to 15% Ge. Over the energy range investigated (Ef≤E≤Ef+0.4 eV) the DOS exhibits a peak approximately 0.7 eV below Ec, and the total number of midgap states increases monotonically by a factor of 2 with Ge content. No structure specifically attributable to Ge defect states is seen. These results are interpreted in terms of a diphasic microstructural model of the alloy films.

    Notes: Abstract The limiting conductance of various salts of Na+, Ag+, Cu+, Cu2+ and Ph4As+ in acetonitrile-water (AN-H2O) and pyridine-water (Py−H2O) mixtures are reported. Single ion values are calculated for AN-H2O mixtures using the TATB assumption [λo(Ph 4 As +) = λo(Ph 4 B −)]. The trends observed for the limiting Walden products (λoη) of the electrolytes and individual ions are discussed in terms of specific ion-solvent interactions and the structural effects of the solvent mixtures.

    Notes: Abstract The24MgH+ (A 1Σ+ −X 1Σ+) molecular lines have been identified in the photospheric spectrum. The rotational excitation temperature determined from the analysis of molecular line intensities of24MgH+ is found to be of the order of 4850 K which corresponds to the photospheric temperature of the Sun. The CNDO/2 dipole moments of24MgH+ for internuclear distance range: (1.3–2.1) Å in theX 1Σ+ state can be approximated byM(R)=4.92+1.33R. Estimations for the spontaneous emission Einstein coefficients (A v′ v″ ) and the absorption oscillator strengths (f v′ v″ ) for the (1, 0), (2, 0), and (2, 1) transitions in theX 1Σ+ state of the24MgH+ ion are also made.

    Notes: Summary Fifty-two cases of urinary tract calculus disease were investigated for dietary habits, routine chemical and microscopic urinalysis, bacterial culture, quantitative analysis of 24 h urine sample and qualitative analysis of the stones. 54 out of the 56 stones analysed were of mixed type. Magnesium ammonium phosphate was present in 78.2% stones. Dietary habits revealed principal dependence on cereals, lack of animal proteins, consumption of oxalate rich vegetables and widespread consumption of tea. Urinary tract infection was present in 63.7% of the cases. Significant calcium oxalate crystalluria (2+ to 4+) was present in 34.6% of the cases. Hyperoxaluria, hypercalciuria associated with hyperoxaluria-lower excretion of magnesium and citric acid were important urinary risk factors in the local population. These observations strongly suggest the multifactorial etiology of stone disease in this region. Imbalanced nutrition and urinary tract infection were the principal risk factors for urolithiasis in this study.

    Notes: Abstract Rutherford backscattering (RBS), ion channeling and surface studies were done to investigate diffusion of ion implanted Sb in Si. Clean and polished Si was implanted by 190KeV Sb+ ions to a dose of 2.3×1015cm−2. Laser annealing was carried out by a single 10 J/cm2 laser pulse from a Nd: glass (7 ns FWHM) laser. Concentration profiles of Sb as a function of depth and dopant substitutionalities were measured by helium-ion backscattering and channeling. The laser shot resulted in melting of the central portion of the spot. A honey comb type surface morphology was found by SEM analysis. Dektak surface profiles showed a crater of 600 nm depth. One-dimensional heating calculations show that dopant diffusion depths, after consideration of simultaneous evaporation, can be ∼400 nm, whereas experiments indicate larger depths (∼1 μm). Calculated crater depth is roughly twice the experimental value. Measured depths are much larger than calculated by heat diffusion and indicate that regrowth and distribution of Sb has been modified by convection in the melt. We estimate good substitutionality up to 4 J/cm2 and discuss energy density dependence for such high-energy density laser pulses.

    Notes: Summary Chlorate resistant mutants of the cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum isolated after N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) mutagenesis were found to be defective/blocked in nitrate reductase (NR). The parent strain possessed active NR in the presence of nitrogen as nitrate and only basal levels of activity in ammonia and N-free grown cultures. Addition of ammonia suppressed the NR activity in the parent strain whereas addition of L-methionine DL-sulphoximine (MSX) restored NR activity. A similar repression by ammonia, glutamine and derepression with MSX were also observed for nitrogenase synthesis. One class of mutants lacked NR activity (nar -) whereas the specific activity of NR was low in another class of mutants (nar def). Unlike the parent, the mutants synthesized nitrogenase and differentiated heterocysts in the presence of nitrate nitrogen. Uptake studies of nitrite and ammonia in mutants revealed that they possessed both nitrite reductase and glutamine synthetases (GS) at low levels, and the same level respectively in comparison with the parent.

    Notes: Abstract Photodissociation lifetime of 32s2in comets is calculated by absorption of solar photons into the B3Σ− state and velocity distributions of sulphur atoms are determined. Absorption of solar photons of wavelength ~ 280 nm leads to a photodissociation lifetime of about 250 s for 32S2 molecule in comets when sun-comet distance is 1 AU. Forbidden lines corresponding to 1D-3P transitions of neutral sulphur atom may be detectable at about 11 306 and 10 821 Å in comets. The production rate of 32S2 dimer in comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock 1983d compares well with the production rate of CS, observed in comet Bradfield, when compared at the same heliocentric distance. The chemistry of 32S2 dimer formation in the inner coma of a comet is discussed in the framework of some gas phase reactions.
