Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary 1. The size of intramitochondrial granules in the distal portion of the proximal convoluted tubules in the kidney of guinea pigs depends considerably on the method of fixation (Figs. 1–3). Using Caulfield's technique, the granules are particularly large (Fig. 1). 2. The granules are larger and highly adielectronic after the presence of sodium ions has been demonstrated in the tissue according to Komnick's method (Figs. 5 and 6). 3. Following bilateral adrenalectomy in guinea pigs, the sodium loss leads to a clearing of the intramitochondrial granules. Thereby, a system of trilaminar structures of unit membrane type becomes visible (Fig. 7).
