Notes: Summary In his experience with 531 surgical procedures for the relief of trigeminal neuralgia between 1955 to 1970, the author developed a strong preference for the percutaneous electro-coagulation of the gasserian ganglion. Although the method was repeatedly modified in the early years, a standardized technique of controlled, selective and fractional coagulation in the semiawake state of neurolept-anaesthesia was used since 1963 in 183 of his 311 patients, treated in this manner. The advantages of the method, particularly in comparison to open intracranial root sections, are: Minimal operative risk, control of operative effect during the operation, small sensibility deficit, low rate of complications, short hospitalization, short convalescence and satisfactory final result in 93% of the patients (after a second or third coagulation, if needed) in a three-year follow-up period.

Notes: Abstract From filament observations at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths it is shown that the transition layer between the dense, cool filamentary material and the ambient hot, rarified corona is rather thin, of the order of some hundred kilometers. Hence, the difference in the sizes of filaments in the radio and optical domains is of the order of 1000 km or 2″, thus not detectable by the instruments so far used for observations of filaments.

Notes: Summary A new pressure transducer microperfusion system has been used to measure quantitatively SN GFR, early proximal free flow pressure and stop flow pressure of varying flow rates through the loop of Henle in the range of 0 to 50 nl/min. Perfusing the loop with an isoosmolal artificial tubular fluid at physiological flow rates SN GFR was 19.9±1.1 and 27.7±1.0 nl/min in two different strains of antidiuretic rats. SN GFR increased when loop perfusion was interrupted. The question whether a feedback control mechanism of SN GFR is operative in the rat kidney was evaluated in further experiments in which early proximal tubular pressure was measured in functionally isolated proximal convolutions in vivo under conditions of constant flow as well as stopped flow. Experiments in which perfusion rate through the loop of Henle was varied demonstrated the existence of a feedback signal which originates downstream of the late proximal convolution and which affects filtration into individual early proximal segments. This feedback mechanism exhibited an asymmetrical behaviour: Elevation of loop perfusion above the control value resulted in an early proximal pressure drop, under simulated free flow conditions as well as under stop flow conditions. In contrast lowering of perfusion rate below the predetermined physiological value had no significant effect on early proximal pressures.

Notes: Summary A method has been developed which permits continuous recording of intratubular pressures and simultaneous infusion of test solution at rates of 0–50 nl/min through a single microcapillary. Design and operation of the system is described which consists of an ultraminiature pressure transducer, a micro-perfusion pump and the probing microcapillary. Sealing of the latter was achieved by a screw collar which permits rapid replacement of capillaries without deleterious pressure spikes. At optimal supply voltage the recorded signal was independent of input voltage changes (up to ± 100 mV) and directly proportional to a) pressure applied to the microcapillary tip and b) flow rate through the capillary. — As example the pressure increments following local infusion into the proximal convolution of indigocarmine stained saline or reabsorption inhibitors at a rate of 10 nl/min was measured. During the infusion of 10% mannitol intratubular pressure rose to a plateau and remained above control levels. Application of potassium cyanide (1.5×10−10 M/min) resulted in a gradual pressure increase starting at the onset of the intratubular perfusion. A qualitative similar rise was observed during administration of furosemide (2.2×10−11 M/min), however the effect exhibited a time delay of several minutes.

Notes: Summary A partial urinary bladder resection was performed in 25 female cats. The defect was replaced with an X-ray treated autologuous full thickness skin graft. This graft was shown to be an appropriate foundation for the rapid regeneration of transitional cell epithelium which was proven to be present after 4 weeks. Smooth muscle fibres were present in all cases after 12 weeks. Postoperatively, bladder capacity was adequate without evidence of incrustation or ossification. No changes were seen in the upper urinary tract. Compared to other types of autologous bladder wall replacement this method is simple and warrants clinical investigation.

Notes: Summary Chemical Stripping of the urinary bladder mucosa was studied in 38 cats using 5 to 25% formaldehyde solutions. The contact time varied from 1 to 20 min. With a 20% solution and contact time of 1 min, total denudation was possible without necrosis of subepithelial layers. In such cases, complete reepithelialisation and normal bladder dynamics were seen within 3–4 weeks after formaldehyde instillation. Signs of formaldehyde intoxication due to vesical resorption were not observed.

Notes: Abstract On November 27, 1974, a map of the Moon was obtained at 6 cm wavelength with the 100-m-telescope in Effelsberg. The high angular and favourable temperature resolution allowed an interpretation of the observed brightness distribution. The dominant feature of the brightness distribution is the centre-to-limb variation, particularly noticeable in the direction of the poles. The exponentα of the commonly adopted cos α (ψ)-law, describing the temperature variation across the lunar disk, is determined asα ≃ 0.4. The North-South variation of the lunar surface temperature is estimated to be 30%; the depth of penetration (L e) of electromagnetic waves of 6 cm wavelength is found to beL e ≃ 17 m.

Notes: Abstract A map of the Moon at 2 cm wavelength is presented. The angular (≃ 1′arc) and temperature resolution (〈 0.1 K) is sufficient to study systematic details of the brightness distribution. In particular, the centre-to-limb variation is considered. An estimate of the dielectric constant∈ is possible (1.4 ⩽∈ ⩽ 2.5). The existence of a temperature gradient in the lunar surface layers is used to derive the depth of penetration of electromagnetic waves (L e ), which isL e ≃ 8 m for 2 cm wavelength. The parameters derived from the 2 cm map are found to be compatible with those obtained from a former observation at 6 cm wavelength.

Notes: Summary End-to-end anastomosis of the kidney vessels and ureter can easily be done without suture. Artery and ureter are connected via an intraluminal silicone tube, anastomosis of the vein is performed with a cuff-technique. In case of orthotopic transplantation the left kidney is transplanted to the right side after right nephrectomy. Furthermore heterotopic transplantation was tried: kidney vessels were either connected with jugular or femoral vessels. In contrast to orthotopic transplantation higher thrombosis rate was observed, probably due to varying sizes of donor and recipient vessels. Our method of orthotopic autotransplantation is easier, less time consuming and has a lower complication rate than homologous kidney transplantation with suture techniques.
