Notes: Forty-nine cases of cutaneous malignant lymphoma were reviewed in order to analyze the clinicopathological features of these neoplasms. Excluding 13 cases of mycosis fungoides and 4 cases of cutaneous involvement of proven adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia, the remaining 32 cases were further classified according to their pathological and clinical features. There were 12 primary cutaneous lymphomas, 15 cases of secondary cutaneous involvement of systemic lymphoma, and 5 cases of concurrent skin and lymph node involvement. Histologically, large cell lymphoma predominated in both primary and secondary cutaneous lymphomas. Immunohistochemical study using monoclonal antibodies reactive with B- and T-cells in paraffin sections revealed the cellular lineage in 30 cases. Nineteen cases were of T-cell origin and 11 cases were of B-cell derivation. The prognosis of these patients was rather poor; 25 patients died within 5 years. The predominance of T-cell lymphoma contrasts with a higher frequency of cutaneous B-cell lymphoma in Western countries. As the clinicopathological features of cutaneous lymphomas are diverse, it is suggested that cutaneous lymphomas should be classified and studied in a similar way to their nodal counterparts.

Notes: Abstract Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality in infants. The diagnosis relies heavily upon radiographic and clinical features. Failure to accurately diagnose NEC is associated with a risk of complications and death, however overdiagnosis also causes both morbidity and mortality as well as excessive medical costs. This report documents the use of barium enema to evaluate suspected clinical or radiographic NEC in 31 premature infants with ambiguous clinical and radiographic signs. The enema was normal in 26 infants and no treatment for NEC was given. Only one of these infants developed signs of NEC subsequent to the examination. Five infants had radiographic evidence of colitis including small ulcerations, spasm, intramural extravasation of barium and mucosal irregularity. Two of the five positive cases are pathologically documented. The barium enema can represent a significant improvement in the specificity of the diagnosis of NEC. Its greatest value is in the exclusion of NEC in ambiguous cases.

Notes: Summary A mechanical framework on the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) is presented. Numerical illustration of the theory can well explain such phenomena in TRIP as a remarkable increase in elongation at a certain range of temperature in the uniaxial tensile tests and the effect of the residual austenite.

Notes: Summary Plucked scalp hairs and hair roots of pili annulati were examined to understand their pathogenesis. Stereoscopic examinations of hairs in transmitted light and/or reflected light and light microscopic surveys of the cross-sections of hairs confirmed that the cortical empty spaces appeared to be responsible to the unique dotted shiny appearance of the hairs seen by the unaided eyes under a refracted light. By transmission electron microscope, small vacuoles and dense bodies were observed in the cytoplasm of the differentiating cortical cells; subsequently, with increasing number of tonofilaments, an uneven distribution of free ribosomes occurred and abnormal spaces containing fine granular substances were formed in the cytoplasm of the cortical cells. Occasionally, extremely large cortical trichohyaline granules were found. In the keratinized hair, irregular empty spaces were present in the cortex of the abnormal hair segments. Histochemically, the keratinized cortex of the affected hairs always had more residual SH groups than the controls. Pili annulati may be a disorder of protein metabolism involving a partial dysfunction of cytoplasmic ribosomes, resulting in a lack of cortical keratin formation.

Notes: Abstract Sixty-eight cases of neuroblastoma detected during mass screening being performed by 11 local self-governing bodies of Japan were studied concerning age, clinical stage, and survival rate. Their average ages at the first screening, at the beginning of thorough examination, and at the start of therapy were 215.7, 245.6, and 264.7 days, respectively. This screening, which is aimed at the 6-month-old infants is considered to be acceptable, on the grounds that the majority of the cases (95.6%) were asymptomatic at the time of thorough examination, that for most of the cases (98.5%) the initiation of therapy was at under 1 year of age, and that their 60-month survival rate was 87.5%. However, there seems to be room for discussion of the best age at which subjects should be screened, because the 68 cases included some patients already with advanced stages at the time of thorough examination, and because “false negative cases” were identified besides the 68 positive cases.

Notes: Abstract Attempts were made to analyze the toxin composition of the toxic “hiogi” scallop Chlamys nobilis. The toxins were partially purified from the digestive glands by column chromatography using Bio-Gel P-2 and Bio-Rex 70 (H+ form), resulting in separation into protogonyautoxin (PX), gonyautoxin (GTX) and saxitoxin (STX) fractions. Their total potencies were scored to be 〈100 mouse units (MU), 3200 MU and 3700 MU, respectively. A 5-min hydrolysis with 0.1 N HCl enhanced the potencies of PX and GTX fractions to 450 MU and 12000 MU respectively, whereas no enhancement occurred in the STX fraction at all. Electrophoretic, thin-layer chromatographic and high performance liquid chromatographic analyses demonstrated that the PX fraction consisted mainly of GTX8 and its epimer, the GTX fraction of GTX5, GTX6, along with two unidentified toxins, and the STX fraction exclusively of two unidentified toxins. This rather unique composition suggested a complex metabolism of PSP in this species.

Notes: Summary Chlorotic plants were segregated in F2 populations in varietal crosses of common rice. The genetic basis and distribution of the genes causing F2 chlorosis in native cultivars were studied to examine the role of the F2 chlorosis in varietal differentiation of rice. It was proven that this F2 chlorosis was controlled by a set of duplicate genes, hca-1 and hca-2. The hca-2 gene was widely distributed in native cultivars of the Japonica type, while many Indica types carried its dominant allele hca-2 +. Japanese cultivar J-147 carried hca-2. The hca-1 gene was frequently distributed in cultivars containing the Hwc-2 gene for F1 weakness. We concluded that F2 chlorosis does not cause or promote varietal differentiation in rice.

Notes: Summary The dynamic behavior of a cylindrical membrane and a circular membrane rotating on a thin gas film is studied theoretically. It is demonstrated that in some cases a wavy deflection shape of a membrane moves only forwardly at about half of the rotating speed and that the motion is very slowly damped out.
