Notes: A GaInP(N)/GaAs( p) heterojunction bipolar transistor was fabricated by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) for the first time. The common-emitter current gain exceeded 200 at a current density around 10 A/cm2 and the offset voltage was as small as 50 mV. Thermionic emission theory indicates that the conduction-band discontinuity (ΔEc) at GaInP/GaAs heterointerface is as small as 30 meV at room temperature and this value was more than 160 meV smaller than 0.19–0.22 eV obtained by the C-V profile method. The band-gap energy for MOCVD-grown GaInP was 60 meV smaller than the intrinsic band-gap energy (1.91 eV), but this value is too small to explain the difference between the present ΔEc value and the previously reported ΔEc value.

Notes: Fe multilayered films with various intermediate layers are formed. Their magnetic properties and film structures are examined to understand the mechanism originating soft magnetic properties. The soft magnetic properties change with the lattice mismatches between Fe and intermediate layers, showing low coercive force and high relative permeability at lattice mismatches from 0.4 to 1.2%. It is thought that the lattice mismatches above 0.4% decrease Fe crystallite size and improve soft magnetic properties. Although Fe crystallite size is small at the lattice mismatches above 1.2%, the soft magnetic properties are poor. This is because the large lattice mismatch increases internal stress and magnetic anisotropy energy. This report indicates that the good soft magnetic properties are obtained when both Fe crystallite size and internal stress are small.

Notes: A patient on long-term minocycline therapy developed blue-black discoloration on the legs. Skin biopsy specimens from the pigmented areas were examined by light and electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Pigmented granules were present at all levels of the dermis and subcutaneous fat tissues. Ultrastructural examination showed electron-dense graular material within the cytoplasm of dermal macrophages and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis indicated that the granules contained iron. Thyroid tissue obtained by aspiration biopsy showed the presence of fine brown granules within the cytoplasm of the follicular epithelial cells. An extract of skin from the pigmented areas was subjected to high performance liquid chromatography and minocycline was detected.

Notes: Abstract Feynmanx distributions for the inclusive reactionsP+P→hadron+anything at 360 GeV/c are analyzed in terms of a quark-diquark fragmentation model. The proton is assumed to be composed either of a quark and a diquark or of three independent quarks. The model tested includes a hadronization part for which we use the Field-Feynman and LUND fragmentation functions. The model with diquarks gives a better description of our experimental data; in particular forP+P→Λ 0+anything, the model without diquarks fails to reproduce the data.

Notes: Summary Recent studies have demonstrated that glicentin is released during nutrient ingestion. However, the biological function of glicentin remains unclear. In order to clarify the role of glicentin in the enteroinsular axis, the effect of glicentin-related peptides was investigated using in vivo local circulation of canine pancreas. Peaks I and II of gut glucagon-like immunoreactivity, partially purified from porcine intestinal extract by affinity chromatography and gel filtration, synthesized hexadecapeptide of N-terminal glicentin (1–16) and synthesized octapeptide of C-terminal glicentin (62–69) were administered for 10 min into the pancreaticoduodenal artery of canine pancreas. Blood samples were then drawn from the pancreaticoduodenal vein. The administration of peak I of glucagon-like immunoreactivity during arginine infusion in a dosage of 20 ng reduced the glucagon secretion by 42 pmol/1 (p〈0.05), whereas peak 11 of glucagon-like immunoreactivity (20 ng) slightly increased the plasma level of insulin, although not significantly. The administration of glicentin (1–16) in a dosage of 400 ng during saline infusion did not alter the plasma insulin level, but reduced the plasma glucagon level in the pancreaticoduodenal vein by 29 pmol/1 (p〈0.05). In addition, glicentin [62–691 in a dosage of 400 ng exerted a decrease in both the plasma insulin (40 mU/1,p〈0.05) and glucagon level (27 pmol/l,p〈0.05). The present study demonstrates the suppression of pancreatic glucagon release during the infusion of peak I glucagon-like immunoreactivity and N- or C-terminal glicentin-related peptide. Therefore, it is suggested that glicentin released during nutrient intake might inhibit the secretion of glucagon.

Notes: Summary HLA phenotypes and haplotypes in relation to organ-specific autoantibody responses were studied in 82 Japanese patients with Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes. HLA-DRw9 antigen and HLA phenotype of DRw9/X (X: not DR4) were increased in patients with organ-specific autoantibodies other than islet cell antibody (CP〈0.02, RR=4.02 and p〈0.05, RR=2.30, respectively); whereas HLA-DR4 antigen and HLA phenotype of DR4/X (X: not DRw9) were increased in those without the autoantibodies (CP〈0.001, RR=3.95 and p〈0.01, RR=2.46, respectively). HLA haplotype of Bw61-DRw9 was increased in patients with the autoantibodies (p〈0.005, RR=4.94), and HLA haplotype of Bw54-DR4 was increased in those without the autoantibodies (p〈0.001, RR=5.52). The relative risk of HLA-DR4/DRw9 was the highest among all HLA-DR phenotypes or genotypes in patients either with or without the autoantibodies. No association was, however, found between the incidence of islet cell antibody and HLA-DR phenotypes. These findings suggest that Type 1 diabetes among Japanese is immunogenetically heterogeneous as is Type 1 diabetes among Caucasians; and the differences in HLA-association of Type 1 diabetes among ethnic groups might give a clue to understanding of a role of HLA-antigens in the development of Type 1 diabetes.

Notes: Abstract Mast cells were isolated from the bovine liver capsule by treatment with collagenase. The extract from the mast cells contained aprotinin. The concentrations of aprotinin, heparin and histamine in these mast cells were (196±42) pg/cell, (1.6±0.2)×10−4 IU/cell and (32±3) pg/cell (mean±S.E.M. of 8–11 experiments), respectively, determined by an enzyme immunoassay, spectrophotometrically and fluorometrically.

Notes: Abstract Massive thymic hyperplasia (MTH) is rare in the pediatric age group, especially in infants. However, because of a wide variation in size and weight of the thymus, an enlarged gland is often resected because of suspicion of a neoplasm or a cyst. Some cases of thymoma resembling pulmonary acute infection occur less frequently than MTH, but if respiratory problems are accompanied by a large thymus immediate diagnosis is often necessary to differentiate between these two conditions. Four infants (14 days to 4 months of age) with MTH were recently studied, all having an acute onset of a severe respiratory distress. The infants were referred to our center with a tentative diagnosis of thymic or other intrathoracic tumors. The following case reports illustrate our diagnostic approach to evaluate patients with symptoms suggesting MTH and the response to the “steroid test”.
