Notes: Magneto-photoluminescence from mesa-shaped Cd0.95Mn0.05Te/Cd0.90Mg0.10Te quantum wires were studied. The Zeeman shift of the excitonic photoluminescence from the quantum wires in a magnetic field is significantly decreased, compared to that from quantum wells. This decrease results from the possible reduction of the exchange interaction of electrons and holes with Mn ions in low dimensional structures. In the excitonic photoluminescence of the quantum wires with the width of 50–100 nm, the transient relaxation of the luminescence peak energy due to the excitonic magnetic polaron formation is remarkably less than that in the quantum well. This result shows the suppressed excitonic magnetic polaron effect in the narrower quantum wires. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ge3N4 nanobelts 30–300 nm in width were synthesized by thermal reduction of a mixed Ge+SiO2 powder in NH3 atmosphere. These nanobelts were studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscope equipped with an x-ray energy dispersive spectrometer. In these synthesized nanobelts, the existence of α and β phases of Ge3N4 was identified. The α phase exhibiting slight difference from an ideal α-Ge3N4 phase was also found in the present Ge3N4 material. The mechanism of formation of the Ge3N4 nanobelts is discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have measured directly the thermal conductance between electrons and phonons in ultrathin Hf and Ti films at millikelvin temperatures. The experimental data indicate that electron–phonon coupling in these films is significantly suppressed by disorder. The electron cooling time τε follows the T−4 dependence with a record-long value τε=25 ms at T=0.04 K. The hot-electron detectors of far-infrared radiation, fabricated from such films, are expected to have a very high sensitivity. The noise-equivalent power of a detector with the area 1 μm2 and the noise limited by fluctuations of the temperature are expected to be (2–3)×10−20 W/Hz, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than that of the state-of-the-art bolometers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This study examined the effect of masticatory pressure transmitted directly to the hard palate mucosa on the final stage of terminal differentiation of keratinizing system of rats with and without streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus. In the nondiabetic rats with masticatory pressure, the number of terminal-deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated deoxyuridine-triphospate-biotin nick end labelling (TUNEL) positive cells tended to increase about twice as much as in the nondiabetic rats without pressure with and without denture. A similar tendency of increase was observed in the diabetic rats without pressure. The synergy of the mechanical pressure and diabetic condition for 2 weeks greatly accelerated the DNA fragmentation, showing 8-fold increase in TUNEL positive cells over the normal control, and caused exfoliation of the stratum corneum. A 4-week exposure of diabetics to the masticatory pressure induced laminar splitting in the midst of the spinosum. Some cells in the stratum granulosum exhibited a sign of DNA fragmentation when laminar splitting took place in the vital cell layer. Premature DNA fragmentation may disturb the adhesion between spinosum cells and prevent the maturation of stratum corneum. Increase in Bax protein-like immunoreactivity in these epithelial cells as revealed by immunocytochemistry may underlie the premature DNA fragmentation in the oral masticatory epithelium under pressure in diabetic patients.

Notes: Although adequate relief of excess mechanical loading to the joint has been accepted as one of the important treatment concepts in the orthopaedic field, a treatment method for the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to relieve excess mechanical loading has not yet been established. This study aimed to clarify the effect of an occlusal splint on the maintenance of the distracted condylar position achieved by vibrating-traction method. Vibrating dynamic traction force was applied for 5 min to the right TMJ using vibrating-traction apparatus. A flat stabilization splint was adjusted to keep the mandibular position and the condylar displacement was evaluated for 6 h after the dynamic traction procedure. Mean vertical displacement of the mandibular right first molar immediately after the vibrating-traction for the six subjects was 156 μm (ranging from 141 to 179 μm). The calculated mean condylar displacement immediately after the traction was 480 μm and could be kept to be 381 μm even after 6 h by wearing the flat stabilization splint. From the results of this study, it was revealed that the mechanically tracted condylar position could be maintained by a flat occlusal splint. It was suggested that the vibrating-traction method followed by the provision of occlusal support might have a possibility to work as a mechanical relieving procedure for the TMJ.

Notes: The purpose of this study was to investigate bone dynamics in denture supporting tissue under continuous pressure in the diabetic condition by using bone histomorphometry in relation to initial intensity of continuous pressure exerted through the denture base. The experimental denture base, which was designed to load initial continuous pressure of 0·0, 1·0, 10·0 or 20·0 kPa to the denture supporting tissue, was applied to the molar region of hard palate of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Fluorescent labelled palatal bone tissue was stained with Villanueva bone stain and was prepared for the undecalcified grinding section. In 0·0 kPa group, no bone resorption was observed and bone formation was transiently inhibited after the denture insertion. In 1·0 kPa group, although no bone resorption was observed, the beginning of bone formation after the inhibition of bone formation was later than that in 0·0 kPa group and bone formation dynamics after the resumption of bone formation was similar to that in 0·0 kPa group. In 10·0 and 20·0 kPa groups, bone resorption was observed until 3 and 4 weeks, respectively, and the amount of bone resorption for each group was 60 ± 16 and 87 ± 18 μm, respectively. The resumption of bone formation in 10·0 and 20·0 kPa groups were observed at the same stage with 1·0 kPa group, and the bone formation dynamics after the resumption of bone formation in 10·0 and 20·0 kPa groups were also similar to that in 0·0 kPa group. From the results of this study, it was revealed that bone formation following bone resorption did not cause equivalent recovery of the bone surface level to the level observed in the case without bone resorption in the diabetic condition.

Notes: The bone dynamics under denture base has not been clarified sufficiently. The purpose of this study was to evaluate histomorphometrically the bone dynamics in denture supporting tissue with relation to the intensity of the masticatory pressure. The removable denture bases, which exerted four different regulated masticatory pressures (0·0, 1·0, 20·0 or 40·0 kPa), were inserted to the hard palate of the molar region of 22-week-old rats. The palatal tissues were excised from 1 to 12 weeks after denture insertion at intervals of 1 week and embedded in methyl-methacrylate. No bone resorption was observed throughout the experimental period in the 0·0 and 1·0 kPa groups. In the 1·0 kPa group compared with the 0·0 kPa group, bone formation parameters except for bone formation rate significantly increased at 4 weeks, but there was no significant difference between these groups in the other experimental periods. In the 20·0 and 40·0 kPa groups, bone resorption was observed until 3 and 5 weeks, respectively, and the amounts of bone resorption (AoBR) were 45 ± 25 and 104 ± 21 μm, respectively. After bone resorption, bone formation parameters in these two groups showed transiently significant decrease compared with the 0·0 kPa group, but were the same time course as the 0·0 kPa group following this decrease. In conclusion, masticatory pressure caused different time courses of the bone dynamics in denture supporting tissue depending on the initial intensity of the pressure. The AoBR responded to the initial intensity of masticatory pressure. Bone formation following bone resorption did not cause equivalent recovery of the bone surface level to the level observed in the case without bone resorption in the present study.
