Notes: A new connection rule of wave functions at a heterointerface was developed. This connection rule satisfies the conservation of probability current and contains a nonparabolic effective mass of carriers as a natural consequence of the theory. The subband energies in a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well calculated using our new connection rule are in excellent conformity with a wide range of experimental results with band discontinuity of 85% and an effective mass for hole of 0.34m0.

Notes: Single quantum wells of GaAs with barriers of (AlAs)2(GaAs)2 ultrathin-layer superlattices have been fabricated and photoluminescence measurement was performed. The photoluminescence energy was found to change almost linearly against the well width and the photoluminescence linewidth to get smaller with decreasing well width, which is in marked contrast to the case of a usual alloy-barriered single quantum well. It is indicated that the effective energy gap of the ultrathin-layer superlattice barrier decreases with the decreasing well width in such a structure.

Notes: GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure selectively doped with Si was grown in a conventional normal pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition using trimethyl metals and arsine. Mobility of the two-dimensional electron gas as high as 8100, 148 000, and 401 000 cm2/V s was obtained at 300, 77, and 5 K, respectively, for a sample with an undoped Al0.3Ga0.7As spacer layer of 100 A(ring) and with a sheet electron density of about 5×1011 cm−2. The heterostructure with the spacer layer thinner than 100 A(ring) shows high mobility comparable to the best values obtained by molecular-beam epitaxy. The influence of growth parameters on the electron mobility in the heterostructure is described in detail.

Notes: Summary Non-obese diabetic mice aged 30 to 60 days were treated orally with Cyclosporin at doses of 25,15 and 2.5 mg/kg every 2 days until 160 days of age. Diabetes developed in 12 out of 18 oil-treated mice (67%), with partial to complete Langerhans' islet destruction associated with lymphocytic infiltration. The non-obese diabetic mice showed a plasma glucose concentration of 6.62 ± 0.92 mmol/l (mean ± SD) at 50 days of age. The plasma glucose level of oil-treated non-obese diabetic mice gradually increased after 130 days of age and reached 14.0 to 19.0 mmol/l at 160 days of age, while Cyclosporin-treated non-obese diabetic mice showed neither clear increase of plasma glucose levels nor development of insulitis. The cumulative incidence of diabetes in Cyclosporin-treated mice was significantly lower than that in oil-treated mice (p 〈 0.01). Subsequently, Cyclosporin treatment was started after development of glucose intolerance. Twenty-five mg/kg of Cyclosporin was administered every 2 days for 35 days. Cyclosporin appeared to have little therapeutic effect on diabetes in non-obese diabetic mice.

Notes: Abstract An experimental study has been performed on heat transfer to a single drop translating in an immiscible liquid on which a steady uniform electric field is imposed perpendicular to the drop path. Particular attention has been paid to the effect of field-induced circulations inside and outside the drop. Three different combinations of liquids were tested: one for which the drop-to-medium permittivity ratio ɛ* multiplied by the drop-tomedium resistivity ratio χ* is large compared to unity and two for which ɛ* χ* ≪ 1. In the former a remarkable enhancement of heat transfer was obtained which could be ascribed to the induced circulations. However, a less remarkable enhancement obtained in the latter two could not be explained by the circulations which are predicted to be vanishingly weak.

Notes: Summary Phototactic responses in a giant amoeboid cell ofPhysarum plasmodium were studied both by analyzing intracellular ATP content and by applying image processing for recording oscillatory changes in thickness with use of a microcomputer. The ATP content fluctuated and deviated from the initial level upon exposure to light with varying wavelength from 400 to 600 nm. The maximum decrease in the integrated value $$\int\limits_{\text{O}}^{\text{T}} {{\text{ATP}}}$$ dt with T=9 minutes occurred at the wavelength 450 nm. The ATP in a migrating plasmodium distributed twice as high in the front as in the rear. This polar pattern became unstable, and a new wavy pattern appeared by stimulating a local frontal part with blue light. In a concentrically extending plasmodium, peripheral and inside regions oscillated in opposite phase to each other. When part of this organism was exposed to light, stimulated and unslimulated regions began to oscillate in opposite phase, and phase waves propagated inward the stimulated region. And the protoplasm there became thinner, the strongest avoidance reaction occurring to 450 nm light as in ATP response. Phototactic behavior inPhysarum is discussed in terms of bifurcation in spatio-temporal organization appearing in a self-organizing system.
