Notes: Extensive networks of metastable ions link the major peaks in the electron impact mass spectra of two crown ethers containing 2,6-pyrido units. High-resolution mass measurements and the metastable peaks allow the elucidation of the fragmentation pathways. The spectra are influenced more by the presence of aromatic substituents than by the 2,6-pyrido units.

Notes: We describe the construction of a high voltage electric arc puller for controllable fabrication of bent near-field optical fiber probes. Various probes with bent angles ranging from 30° to 75° and bent lengths between 600 and 900 μm were successfully produced. The tip diameters achieved are between 100 and 200 nm. These bent type probes can be made into cantilevered probes that can be used for any dynamic mode atomic force microscope, and make the construction of a scanning near-field optical microscope easily attainable.© 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present the modification of a commercial tapping mode atomic force microscope into a reflection and transmission dual mode scanning near-field optical microscope. In the configuration, the normal force detection unit is replaced by a shear force detection module and an interfacing circuit. The tip-sample distance control is therefore similar to tapping mode operation. Detection of the near-field signals is based on photodiodes and the lock-in technique, and the resolutions obtained for the topography and the near-field signal are around 80 and 150 nm, respectively.© 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetic graphite intercalation compounds (GIC's) allow a controlled separation of atomically abrupt magnetic layers by variation of the stage of the sample. Thus very small J'/J values (∼10−4) and quasi-two-dimensional behavior can be achieved where J' and J are, respectively, the interplanar and intraplanar exchange constants. The applicability of a 2D XY model is established by a comparison of the high-temperature susceptibility with the high-temperature series expansions for the various 2D and 3D models. Low-temperature studies provide values for magnetic interactions pertinent to the most interesting intermediate temperature range, where a 2D XY bound vortex phase may occur.

Notes: The microstructure of the nickel silicide, Ni5Si2, which forms during solid-state reactions using self-supporting Ni-Si lateral-diffusion couples, has been studied using high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and selected-area electron diffraction. Two different structures for Ni5Si2 have been identified, one of which is consistent with the crystal structure which has been reported to have an actual composition of Ni31Si12. There is evidence for the existence of a third structure. Variations in the distribution of these structures and the presence of planar defects may account for the reported composition range of Ni5Si2 in the Ni-Si phase diagram. The observed HREM images are compared with computer simulated images.

Notes: A technique has been adapted to measure the relative change in the acoustic velocity of materials at frequencies up to 500 MHz with a maximum sensitivity of one part in 107. This technique is applied to the measurement of the temperature coefficient of the longitudinal-acoustic velocity of fused quartz over the temperature range 28–47 °C. The longitudinal velocity is observed to increase linearly over this temperature range. The temperature coefficient of the fractional longitudinal velocity increase of fused quartz is determined to be (1.075±0.025)×10−4 °C−1. This number is in agreement with the results of previous investigators and is the most accurate measurement available at room temperature.

Notes: Depth profiling measurements of photoluminescence on GaN epitaxial films grown on c-plane sapphire with metalorganic chemical vapor deposition have been performed. Dry etching technique of reactive ion etching is used with reactive gas of CCl2F2/H2/Ar under an operation power of 200 W. Before and after each etching, reflectivity and photoluminescence spectra are measured. Film thickness is determined from both the scanning electron microscopy and the interference oscillations of the reflectivity spectra. An excellent steady etching rate of 19.2 nm/min is established. The photoluminescence measurements show that both the near-band-edge and the yellow luminescence remain fairly constant until the film thickness of about 700 nm, and a large drop is obtained in the ratio of near-band-edge to yellow emission intensity under about 300 nm. Analysis shows that the yellow luminescence emitters are mostly confined within the near interface region, and supports the origin of yellow luminescence to be due to native defects instead of impurities. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Since 1987, farmers in southern Taiwan have reported significant disease-related mortalities in freshwater prawns. Most mortalities have occurred during the winter, and usually almost all the adult prawns die within 4–5 days after clinical signs appear. Histopathological studies show that cells in hepatopancreatic ducts and tubules are vacuolized and degenerated. Large numbers of membrane-bound yeast aggregates are observed in the affected tissues. Two hundred and seventeen yeast isolates were obtained from diseased prawns, pond water and sediments from six areas. DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was used to analyse the yeast genomes and to categorize them into five groups. Conventional biochemical and metabolic methods were then used to identify the yeasts of each group. The results showed that two strains of Candida sake (I and II), Pichia anomala, Endomyces fibuliger and Candida famata were present. In addition, the RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) method was used to determine their genomic similarities. Two strains (I and II) of C. sake were the most similar (72%). C. sake I appears to be the primary causative agent of disease, based on frequencies of occurrence of the yeasts found in the diseased prawns.
