Notes: Abstract A brief survey is given about the legal basis for the inspection of stored products (cereals) imported to Berlin (West). This follows a report about the results of those controls. From 1980 to 1985 more than 700,000 tons of wheat, barley, reye, oats, sunflower seeds, millet and peanuts were imported from 12 European, American and African countries, more than 99% of them from the GDR. On average about 1% of the imports from the GDR were infested by stored product pests; there were rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae L.), grain weevil (Sitophilus granarius L.), grain beetles (Cryptolestes spp.), confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum Duv.) and red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum Hbst.).

Notes: Abstract It is reported about the appearance of 25 stored-product pests, within 17 species of beetles and 2 species of moths in warehouses of the Bevorratungsabteilung des Senators für Wirtschaft und Arbeit as well as in the other warehouses and private households. The drugstore bettle (Stegobium paniceum L.) and the warehouse moth (Ephestia elutella Hbn.) were the most common pests. Cases of special interest and particular species are described in detail. Also is given a survey about the pest-controlling measures carried out with poisongas as methylbromide, phosphine and hydrocyanic acid and with insecticides on basis of dichlorvos, pyrethrum and piperonylbutoxide.

Notes: Abstract The high temperature dynamics of mixed valent 4f-shells is studied by means of rate equations. Symmetries and detailed balance considerably reduce the number of independent rates. Rates are calculated by Fermi's golden rule. The approach presented here provides an elementary and transparent reproduction of results previously obtained using Mori's formalism.

Notes: Abstract A collisional alignment and orientation study with planar symmetry is described, determining the complete density matrix for resonant charge transfer from laser excited atoms. Results are reported for the Na++Na*(3p) system over the collision energy rangeE c.m.=50−100 eV. We communicate the optimal alignment angle γ and linear polarisationP l + of the charge cloud as well as its relative height ρ00 and the angular momentumL ⊥ + transferred in the collision as a function of the scattering angle. For preparation of the sodium 3p orbital in the scattering plane (positive reflection symmetry) we observe that at small reduced scattering angles (〈20 eV°) the preparation of apσ at large internuclear distances contributes most to the scattering intensity whereas at larger reduced scattering angles (〉60 eV°) apπ+ preparation is more important. In contrast, preparation of thepπ− orbital (perpendicular to the scattering plane) is large at small and vanishes at larger scattering angles. We conclude that orbital following cannot be assumed in this resonant charge transfer process. The angular momentum transfer is observed to be small, indicating only little coherence in the process, but shows nevertheless an interesting behaviour as a function of scattering angle.

Notes: Abstract A hematogenic invasion of the brain in suckling NMRI mice infected with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense was initiated by means of a mechanical damage of the blood-brain barrier. The brain was punctured after development of a blood infection. Brain infection was found in 31 out of 32 animals examined. Trypanosomes are initially capable of rapid multiplication. The number of parasites was highest during the 1st week. From the middle of the 2nd week the number of parasites decreased continuously, alongside increasing atrophy. In the 3rd and 4th week only rare degenerating or ghost trypanosomes were present. No reactions were detected in the glial and mesenchymal cells. It is presumed that the short phase of trypanosome multiplication is due to the temporary collateral oedema of the brain tissue. The decrease in parasites from the 2nd week onwards is mainly attributed to natural death due to particular anatomical features of the brain tissue. These are also responsible for the absence of defensive inflammatory reactions, based on the hypothesis that contact between trypanosomes and the cells of the brain blood vessels is prevented.

Notes: The sulfidation behaviour of a range of Fe-Mn alloys and pure Mn were studied at 973 K, 1073 K, and 1173 K in H2-H2S atmospheres at constant pS2 or constant pH2S/pH2. The sulfidation kinetics were parabolic in most cases, but two different diffusion processes affect the kinetics. In the sulfidation of the Fe-Mn alloys at 973 K and 1073 K, the diffusion of manganese atoms in the alloy is the rate-determining step and an interlocked scale/alloy interface is observed. At 1173 K there is a transition to rate-control by the diffusion of manganese in the sulfide scale connected with transition from rugged to a planar scale/alloy interface.

Notes: Summary The Institute for Hygiene and Technology of Food of Animal Origin is developing a practicable system of monitoring the distribution of toxic substances in the environment, using the dairy cows as bioindicators. A pilot project has been established to solve basic problems as sampling strategy, sample preparation, analysis and data handling. In the preliminary stage of this study the new technique of SS-AAS turned out to be a useful tool. In order to test overall analytical reliability of the data obtained all analytical procedures applied for the different matrices are controlled by the use of reference material of similar matrix composition. A reference material for the matrix “tooth” was commercially not available. Such a material had especially to be prepared in collaboration with the Joint Research Center Ispra. Results of homogeneity-testing on cadmium and lead in this bovine teeth powder are reported. The determination of toxic substances in large organs such as bovine kidney on a routine basis can only be performed on aliquots calling for an adequate strategy of subsampling. Results of studies on the distribution of cadmium and lead are reported; the representativity of small sample amounts of cortical tissue (50–60 mg and 1–2 mg dry mass) has additionally been investigated. Direct analysis of wet tissue aliquots (5– 10 mg) was not feasible. A possible method of sample preparation of wet tissue is presented which yields reliable results within 10 min of operation time.
