Notes: Self-sustained pulsating optical power and kink level in AlGaAs semiconductor lasers are remarkably improved by introducing a multiquantum well (MQW) structure in the active layer. Stable fundamental transverse mode operation at output power up to 50 mW and self-sustained pulsation at output power up to 40 mW are obtained simultaneously for MQW lasers with antireflective and high-reflective coatings on the facets. Low-noise characteristics (relative intensity noise of less than 10−13 Hz−1 under 3–4% optical feedback) are obtained in the output power range from 7 to 17 mW in MQW lasers with high-reflective coating on the rear facet. These results suggest that low-noise high-power characteristics can be achieved in self-sustained pulsating lasers with a MQW active layer.

Notes: Transverse-mode-stabilized ridge stripe AlGaInP semiconductor lasers fabricated using a thin GaAs layer as an etch stop are reproducibly realized. The ridge stripe structure is fabricated utilizing the large difference in etching rates between GaAs/AlGaAs and AlGaInP layers. As a result, the thickness control of the cladding layer adjacent to light absorbing layers is significantly improved. Results show that the GaAs layer is effective as an etch-stop layer even if the thickness is only 1–2 nm. The total internal loss of the lasers is estimated to be about 20 cm−1 and loss due to the insertion of the GaAs layer is almost negligible. A threshold current of about 50 mA and a stable fundamental transverse mode up to an output power of about 10 mW is attained at room temperature under cw operation. Similar results were obtained when an AlGaAs layer was used instead of GaAs.

Notes: Ultrastrutual, immunohistochemical and gene analytical studies were carried out on a 39-year-old patient with lymphomatoid papulosis. Two different cell groups were demonstrated in the papulonodular eruptions: large atypical cells with multiple nuclei that were well stained with anti-Tac, but not with Leu 3a, and other cells that possessed prominent hyperchromatic nuclei and which stained well with Leu 1 and Leu 3a but not with anti-Tac. Gene analytical studies using EcoRI, BamHI and HindIII revealed no rearrangement, indicating a non-clonal T-cell proliferation unlike malignant T-cell lymphoma. These results suggest that the present case was benign.

Notes: A 51-year-old Japanese man and his 56-year-old sister of consanguineous parents had skin lesions with areas of dark-brown pigmentation and blisters with minimal trauma on sunexposed skin which resembled those seen in porphyria cutanea tarda. Their fresh urine was wine-red in colour and fluoresced with ultraviolet light. The peripheral blood contained fluorocytes and porphyrin analysis of the red blood cells, urine and faeces of the patients revealed an increase of the isotype I of uro- and coproporphyrin and normal concentrations of δ-aminolaevulinate and porphobilinogen, suggesting the diagnosis of erythropoietic porphyria. No other members of this family had symptoms or biochemical findings suggestive of porphyria. We consider these two cases to be that of late onset erythropoietic porphyria.

Notes: We describe a patient in whom a suppressor/cytotoxic T cell lymphoma was suspected on the basis of histology and immunohistochemistry. DNA analysis of specimens from three different lesions, using restriction enzymes Eco RI and Bam HI, showed the same rearrangement of the T cell receptor β-chain genes. We consider this technique to be of value in the early diagnosis of malignant lymphoma when differential diagnosis from other lymphoproliferative disorders is difficult with conventional methods.

Notes: Abstract It is demonstrated for the first time that spatial filtering of partially reflected irradiance of light from a directly modulated semiconductor laser diode produces a weak but appreciable amount of harmonic distortions. The laser diode discussed here is assembled to be misaligned in such a way that there is significant reflection of light from the submount attached to the heat sink. This geometry of laser and submount gives rise to interfered light intensities of simultaneous AM- and FM-modulated outputs in the far-field region. Numerical calculations are presented for a variety of laser structures and FM-modulation parameters. The second-order harmonic distortion is found to disclose multiple peaks with respect to the aperture radius of a receiving optical system.

Notes: Summary The effect of dibutyryladenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (dibutyryl cAMP) on the expression of glutathione S-transferase placental type (GST-P) was examined in rat glioma cell line using an immunohistochemical technique. Cultured T9 glioma cells were negative for GST-P activity under normal conditions. However, treatment with 1 mM dibutyryl cAMP produced GST-P expression in about 50% of the cells, as well as some morphological changes. The expression of GST-P was increased with addition of dibutyryl cAMP together with 1 μg/ml allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) or 0.1 μg/ml benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC). With these combinated treatments, almost all cultured cells showed a strong positive reaction for GST-P, although AITC or BITC alone elicited GST-P in only 5% of the cultured cells. The results of the present study indicate that dibutyryl cAMP causes functional as well as morphological differentiation of T9 glioma cells.

Notes: Summary The relationship between epidermopoiesis and macrophage infiltration was studied in delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) skin lesions in guinea pigs that had been sensitized with heat-killed tubercle bacilli or bovine serum albumin (BSA). Macrophages were identified with acid-phosphatase and nonspecific esterase stains, and the epidermal proliferative response was studied at DTH challenge sites by autoradiography. The number of macrophages in the sensitized animals was higher than that in the nonsensitized animals 48–72 h following challenge injections, when labelling indices were also elevated in the former group. Soluble factor(s) from cultured macrophages transiently enhanced the DNA synthesis of epidermal cells in cultures and in the sites injected with the factor(s). These results suggest that macrophages retained in the DTH lesion may play a role in an acceleration of epidermal proliferation, thus leading to acanthosis and lichenification.

Notes: Summary The dynamic properties of plasma membrane in epidermal cells were determined by means of electron spin resonance using two kinds of doxyl stearic acid spin labeling agents: 5-DSA and 12-DSA. 5-DSA and 12-DSA are stearic acid analogues with a nitroxide radical ring at the 5th and 12th carbon positions, and these motions reflect molecular motion of lipid bilayer surrounding the hydrophilic region and the hydrophobic region, respectively. Guinea pig epidermal cells were separated into three regions of keratinocytes by Percoll density gradient centrifugation; the upper, middle, and lower epidermal cells. The order parameter S values for 5-DSA and 12-DSA incorporated into the isolated keratinocytes increased, suggesting a decrease in the plasma membrane fluidity, as cells approached the upper epidermal cell layer. The Na+, K+-ATPase activity as a plasma membrane-bound enzyme was determined in each epidermal cell region, and was found to decrease gradually as the cells approached the upper layer. Accordingly, the differentiation of epidermal cells in the keratinization process was found to be assiciated with a decrease in plasma membrane fluidity and with a decline of Na+, K+-ATPase activity.

Notes: [Auszug] TANAKA ET AL. reply-First, we would like to correct the term "mantle array" in the summary of ref. 1 to crustal array. We originally used the term crustal array to distinguish the clear eCe-eNd array, but the term was changed in the editing of our manuscript. It was pointed out in ref. 1 that ...
