Notes: Arsenic precipitate-induced dislocation loops generated at the projected range Rp of As in high-dose As-implanted, annealed (100) Si are eliminated, if oxygen-atom concentrations at the Rp region are high, i.e., above about 1×1020 atoms/cm3 . This is confirmed by the following two experiments: 80 keV, 2×1016 As+/cm2, 18-nm-thick through-oxide implantation together with subsequent annealing and a double implantation of 80 keV, 2×1016 As+ /cm2 and 22 keV, 5×1015 O+ /cm2 , followed by an annealing sequence. Experimental results suggest that the bonding of several As atoms with one oxygen atom suppresses As clustering.

Notes: Abstract The low-temperature fabrication of silicon nitride films by ArF excimer laser irradiation has been studied. Two fabrication methods are presented. One is photo-enhanced direct nitridation of a silicon surface with NH3 for very thin gate insulators, and the other is photo-enhanced deposition of silicon nitride films with Si2H6 and NH3 gases for stable passivation films. The ArF excimer laser irradiation dissociates the NH3 gas producing NH and NH2 radicals which proved effective in instigating the nitridation reaction. The quality of both films has been much improved and the growth temperature has been lowered by using laser irradiation. These photo-enhanced processes seem to be promising ULSI techniques because they do not depend on high temperatures and are free from possible reactor contamination.

Notes: Abstract The effect of acute and chronic alcohol ingestion on gastric prostaglandin E2 synthesis and the PGE2 content in the stomach was studied in rats. Up to 8 hr following a single oral load of 20% alcohol (v/v; 4 g/kg body weight), the PGE2 synthesis in isolated microsomes from rat stomach remained unchanged as compared with control values. Feeding a liquid alcohol-containing diet (37% of total Joules) for 1,6, or 12 weeks significantly decreased the rate of PGE2 synthesis (percentage inhibition as compared with control values 39, 27, and 57, respectively). In addition, chronic alcohol feeding led to a drop in the tissue content of PGE2, the decrease being more pronounced after 6 (−49%) and 12 (−58%) weeks than after 1 week (−24%). The results suggest that the inhibition of endogenous PGE2 synthesis in the stomach following ingestion of appreciable quantities of alcohol might play a role in the pathogenesis of alcohol-induced injury of the gastric mucosa.

Notes: Summary To investigate the change in myocardial phospholipids after the administration of isoproterenol and its prevention by pretreatment with phospholipase inhibitors and calcium antagonists, we determined the phospholipid species in the heart of female Wistar rats. Isoproterenol (40 mg/kg) was administered 24 h before excising the heart, and chlorpromazine, mepacrine (phospholipase inhibitors), nifedipine, verapamil (calcium antagonists) and propranolol (β-adrenoceptor blocker) were injected intraperitoneally 30 min prior to isoproterenol administration. The phospholipid species were quantified using silica gel precoated thin-layer rods and the hydrogen flame ionization method. Isoproterenol induced significant increases in heart/body weight ratio, myocardial protein/heart weight ratio and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), and significant decreases in myocardial total phosphorus, creatine kinase (CK) activity, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine (PC). The significant decrease in PC and increase in LPC indicated the degradation of myocardial phospholipids. Pretreatment with nifedipine (30 mg/kg), verapamil (50 mg/kg) or propranolol (20 mg/kg) completely prevented the occurrence of myocardial injury through the preservation of myocardial phospholipid composition, total phosphorus, CK activity and heart/body and protein/heart weight ratios. On the other hand, chlorpromazine (30 mg/kg) and mepacrine (50 mg/kg) partially prevented myocardial damage through the preservation of myocardial phospholipid composition, total phosphorus and CK activity. Results suggest that not only calcium influx but also phospholipase activation plays an important role in the development of myocardial injury induced by isoproterenol.

Notes: Summary Sepabeads FP series with a variety of anion-exhanger type functional groups have been examined as largescale chromatographic separation media for proteins. The adsorption-desorption behavior of proteins has been found to be dependent mainly on the type and partly on the content of the attached amino ligands. The effect of the attached groups are discussed using batch measurement data. It has been found that the existence of ethanol residue on the nitrogen atom incrases the hydrophilic nature of quaternary ammonium type packings and thus gives a higher protein adsorption capacity. Among weakly basic type anionexchangers, polyethyleneimine-modified packings showed very large protein capacities.
