    Notes: The capacitance-voltage (C-V) and the current-voltage characteristics of metal/ZnSe/p-GaAs capacitors have been investigated; both epitaxial layers were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. In the capacitor structures highly resistive, stoichiometric ZnSe functioned as the pseudoinsulator on the doped GaAs layers. The capacitance-voltage measurements demonstrated that the capacitors could be biased from accumulation through depletion, and into deep depletion, with current in the range of 10−8 A cm−2. Very little frequency dispersion was observed in the C-V data when measured from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. From the high-frequency C-V curve, the surface state density as a function of position in the GaAs band gap was determined. Surface state densities were comparable to densities reported for (Al,Ga)As/GaAs heterojunctions.

    Notes: Epilayers of the previously hypothetical zinc-blende MnTe have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Epitaxial layers (0.5 μm thick) of MnTe were characterized using x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy; optical reflectance measurements indicate a band gap of ∼3.2 eV. A series of strained single quantum well structures was fabricated with zinc-blende MnTe forming the barrier to CdTe quantum well regions; photoluminescence spectra indicate optical transitions corresponding to strong electron and hole confinement.

    Notes: A series of pseudomorphic ZnTe/AlSb/GaSb epilayer/epilayer heterostructures, aimed at the realization of novel wide band-gap light-emitting devices, was grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The structures were evaluated by several techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray rocking curves, photoluminescence (PL), and Raman spectroscopy. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction intensity oscillations were observed during nucleation of ZnTe. The presence of dislocation-free pseudomorphic structures was confirmed by TEM. The PL spectra of ZnTe epilayers showed dominant near-band-edge features composed of free and shallow impurity bound excitons.

    Notes: Results of a deep-level transient spectroscopy study of Ga-doped ZnSe thin films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy are presented. Two prominent deep levels were observed in all the samples investigated. The concentration of the trap detected at 0.34 eV below the conduction-band edge was essentially independent of the doping concentration and is attributed to native defects arising from Se vacancies in the ZnSe films. The second level with an activation energy of 0.26 eV shows a very strong doping dependence and is tentatively identified as arising from dopant-site (gallium-on-zinc-site) defects complexed with selenium vacancies. Preliminary results also indicate that planar doping of ZnSe significantly reduces the concentration of the Ga-vacancy complex.

    Notes: Abstract. The pathogenicity of Renibacterium salmoninarum to carp, Cyprinus carpio L., and rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, was investigated. All carp injected with 4·8 × 108 cells/fish, or 4·8 × 107 cells/fish survived for 38 days. R. salmoninarum was isolated from all moribund fish, but not from the kidney of surviving fish, although R. salmoninarum antigen was detected in several of these fish by the dot blot assay. On the other hand, mortality in rainbow trout was 95% in the fish injected with 4·8 × 108 cells/fish, and 15% in those which received 4·8 × 107 cells/fish. R. salmoninarum antigen was detected by the dot blot assay in all surviving rainbow trout. The number of R. salmoninarum cells was immediately decreased by carp or rainbow trout serum, and the serum bactericidal activity of carp was higher than that of rainbow trout. Carp blood leucocytes had higher phagocytic activity than those of rainbow trout.

    Notes: Summary The liver hydroxyproline content increased 14 days following a single administration of various chemical carcinogens, 2-N-fluorenylacetamide (FAA), 3′-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (3′-Me-DAB), diethylnitrosamine (DEN), dimethylnitrosamine (DMN), and thioacetamide, to rats. The rapid elevation of hydroxyproline following FAA administration, which did not induce liver cell necrosis, was accompanied by an increase in liver collagenase activity. These findings are of interest in relation to the regulatory mechanism of liver fibrogenesis.

    Notes: Abstract Within the framework of the electromagnetic theory, the collective modes in the superlattice system composed of superionic conductors and ionic crystals are studied. The superionic conductor is described by the hydrodynamical model in which the anion cage is immersed in the cation liquid. The behavior of the modes are analysed in terms of the coupling strength between excitations pertaining to different layers. The coupling strength is controlled by varying the slab thicknesses. An interesting behavior in which the diffusion mode transforms to the relaxation mode when the coupling strength is varied from strong to weak is obtained. Also, the effect of the coupling strength on the acoustical and optical modes are shown.

    Notes: Summary An alteration of an amino acid sequence in the processing site of the insulin proreceptor by a point mutation of the insulin receptor gene produced extreme insulin resistance. We characterized functional properties of the unprocessed insulin receptor in transformed lymphocytes from a patient. Insulin binding to intact cells and to a partially purified insulin receptor preparation was radically decreased to 20% and 18% of the control values, respectively. In competitive insulin binding to intact cells, [LeuA3]-, [LeuB24]-, [SerB24-insulin, and mini-proinsulin ([B(1–29)-Ala-Ala-Lys-A(1–21)]-insulin) had the same relative binding activity in both the patient's and the control cells, but proinsulin and IGF-I were markedly less able to displace 125I-insulin in the patient's cells. In contrast to the study in intact cells, proinsulin and IGF-I as well as other insulin analogues had the same relative binding activity to bind to the partially lectin-purified insulin receptor preparations from both the patient's and the control cells. As regards the signal transduction after receptor binding, insulin-stimulated autophosphorylation of the unprocessed insulin proreceptor occurred proportionally to the amount of decreased insulin binding. With 0.025% trypsin treatment, the abnormal binding characteristics and autophosphorylation were normalized through conversion to functionally normal receptors. In spite of the abnormal processing, self-association of receptors into oligomeric structures was observed in the proreceptor. These results suggest that the unprocessed insulin proreceptor in the plasma membranes has an altered conformation which affects its binding characteristics but not its intramolecular signal transmission.

    Notes: Summary We examined the tumor-promoting activity of sodium taurocholate in the remnant stomach of rats. Ninety male Wistar rats, 8 weeks of age, were separated into four groups. In group I, the rats were given N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) at a concentration of 83 mg/l in drinking water for 15 weeks, and distal partial gastrectomy was performed by Roux-en-Y procedure to prevent duodenal reflux into the remnant stomach. Thereafter, a diet containing 0.25% sodium taurocholate was given for 43 weeks. The group II rats were given MNNG and gastrectomy and were then given the usual commercial diet. The rats in group III were given gastrectomy and sodium taurocholate and no previous administration of MNNG. Only MNNG was given to the rats in group IV. The incidence of malignant tumors in the remnant stomach was 40.9% (9/22), 27.3% (6/22), and 0% (0/22) in groups I, II, and III, respectively, while the incidence in the area corresponding to the remnant stomach (control) was 8.3% (2/24) in group IV. The difference in tumor incidence was statistically significant (P〈0.05) between groups I and IV but not between groups II and IV, and not between groups I and II. Six of nine tumors in group I and all six tumors in group II were located in the anastomotic area. These results suggest that sodium taurocholate promotes tumor production in the remnant stomach, and that the surgical procedure may well be associated with this enhanced tumor occurrence.

    Notes: Summary Simultaneous measurements of spontaneous ultraweak photon emission and bioelectrical activity were carried out on germinating soybean root system including the hypocotyl. The experimental results showed that the two different biological phenomena seem to occur almost synchronously, indicating that there may be a physiologically close relationship between them.
