Notes: Summary Biopsy of the triceps surae muscle was carried out in 11 patients who had sustained a spontaneous rupture of the Achilles tendon during sports. All the specimens showed important histological and ultrastructural changes, the most striking being the presence of large quantities of lipid droplets within the mucle fibres. A factor common to every patient was a period of inactivity before resuming sports. Preliminary training may be valuable in producing positive adaptive changes in the muscles, and the consequent improvement in function may reduce the risk of rupture of the Achilles tendon.

Notes: Summary We report the post-mortem findings of the case of a 31-year-old male who, through sexual contacts with a female drug addict, was found to be HIV-positive and developed the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) 2 years later. He was treated for various opportunistic infections over the next 7 years when he presented with cardiac abnormalities and multiple cerebral lesions which were responsible for his death. The results revealedAspergillus fumigatus endocarditis and myocarditis with mycotic thromboembolic extension to the brain, spleen, kidney and pancreas. We review the literature ofAspergillus infection in patients with AIDS and more specifically cardiac involvement with this pathogen.

Notes: Abstract We report three cases of neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection presenting as fulminant hepatitis. None of the patients had clear risk factors for HSV infection and they all died. Antiviral treatment for HSV is currently available but must be administered early in the course of the disease before irreversible liver tissue damage is present. Since the diagnosis may be difficult to establish, we wish to draw the attention of clinicians to the presentation of neonatal HSV infection and suggest that in such cases viral cultures, including culture of liver tissue, should be obtained early and antiviral treatment administered while awaiting the culture results.

Notes: Summary We consider the problem of comparing large finite and infinite systems with locally interacting components, and present a general comparison scheme for the case when the infinite system is nonergodic. We show that this scheme holds for some specific models. One of these is critical branching random walk onZ d . Letη t denote this system, and letη t N denote a finite version ofη t defined on the torus [−N,N] d ∩Z d . Ford≧3 we prove that for stationary, shift ergodic initial measures with density θ, that ifT(N)→∞ andT(N)/(2N+1)d →s∈[0,∞] asN→∞, then {v θ}, θ≧0 is the set of extremal invariant measures for the infinite systemη t andQ s is the transition function of Feller's branching diffusion. We prove several extensions and refinements of this result. The other systems we consider are the voter model and the contact process.

Notes: Summary We consider a system of independent random walks on ℤ. Let ξ n (x) be the number of particles atx at timen, and letL n (x)=ξ0(x)+ ... +ξ n (x) be the total occupation time ofx by timen. In this paper we study the large deviations ofL n (0)−L n (1). The behavior we find is much different from that ofL n (0). We investigate the limiting behavior when the initial configurations has asymptotic density 1 and when ξ0(x) are i.i.d Poisson mean 1, finding that the asymptotics are different in these two cases.
