    Notes: A simple model for van der Waals potentials presented earlier [J. Chem. Phys. 80, 3726 (1984)] has been extended to describe chemical bonds by including the exchange-dispersion term of Herring and Flicker. For H2, the 1Σ ground state potential is predicted in excellent agreement with the accurately known ab initio potential, the well depth being reproduced to within 0.6%. New two configuration self-consistent-field (SCF) calculations for the 1Σ and the 3Σ states of Li2 have made it possible to test the model for this system as well. Here the discrepancy is only 3% in the well depth for the 1Σ Li2 potential.

    Notes: Within the DEKORP project (DEKORP: Deutsches Kontinentales Reflexionsseismisches Programm) a joint deep seismic reflection venture with the BELCORP (Belgian Continental Reflection Seismic Programme) group of the Belgian Geological Survey was carried out in 1987 across the Rhenish Massif, a part of the mid-European Variscides. This orogenic belt developed in the Upper Devonian/Carboniferous. Mostly Devonian rocks crop out at the surface. The Rhenish Massif is bordered by two sedimentary troughs: the sub-Variscan Foredeep in the north and the Permo-Carboniferous Saar-Nahe Basin in the south. In the east-west direction it is subdivided by the axial depression of the Eifel Nord-Süd Zone.The aim of the survey which totals almost 220 km of seismic profiling, was to investigate the crustal structure of the western part of the Rhenish Massif and to compare it with the line DEKORP 2-N which crosses the eastern portion of the massif. The results indicate the presence of NW-vergent tectonics of various styles that can often be traced down to deep parts of the crust. Horizontal Variscan compression plays a dominant role in the northern part while post-Variscan extension seems to dominate in the Saar-Nahe Basin, although even there traces of Variscan compression seem to be preserved in the middle crust. Common characteristics of the pre-Palaeozoic basement, differences between the western and eastern parts of the Rhenish Massif, and the deep extension of the Aachen Thrust (Faille du Midi) have been clearly observed.     Notes: Abstract Elastic electron deuteron scattering has been measured at the Bonn 2.5 GeV electron-synchrotron using a tensor polarized ND3 target. The scattered electrons and deuterons were detected in coincidence by two magnetic spectrometers. Data were taken at an average value of four momentum transfer ofQ 2=0.495 (GeV/c)2 in order to separate the electric monopole and quadrupole form factors of the deuteron. To have a sufficient control of systematic effects, both polarized and unpolarized cross sections were measured with an identical experimental set up. In the ratioR EXP=dσpol/dσunp systematic effects are expected to cancel. This ratioR EXP is related to the theoretical polarized cross section d dσ T where the spin quantization axis for the deuterons is orientated in the ed-scattering plane, perpendicular to the virtual photon direction. Our final result for the corresponding recoil tensor polarization ist 20=−2.01±1.13.

    Description / Table of Contents: Contents The time patterns of short-circuit currents and therefore of the electromagnetic short-circuit forces in DC bus systems are very manifold; they only can be expressed by use of several parameters. For each of these patterns a substitute time function can be determined (rectangle or sinussquare) which causes about the same maximum instantaneous value of mechanical strength, like the original electromagnetic force, if the short-circuit duration is less than the half period of the mechanical oscillation. After suitable modification the rectangle function can also be used if the short-circuit duration is greater than the half period of the mechanical oscillation.
    Notes: Übersicht Die Zeitverläufe der Kurzschlußströme und daher auch der elektromagnetischen Kurzschlußkräfte in Gleichstromanlagen sind sehr vielfältig und können nur mit einer größeren Anzahl von Parametern beschrieben werden.     Notes: Summary This paper reviews research carried out at the Griffith Laboratory in Australia over the last decade on techniques for, and results of, observations of roots in irrigated clay soils. Our results emphasise the adaptability of root systems to rootzone conditions. Experiences with techniques for observing roots non-destructively in the field and both non-destructively and destructively in lysimeters are described. We concluded that the minirhizotron technique, applied in the field, was unreliable under our conditions. Horizontal root observation tubes were used in lysimeters to measure root length density (RLD) and to assess whether roots were clumped together or randomly distributed. Destructive sampling and measurement of RLD was used to establish a theoretical relationship between root intercept counts along the tubes and RLD. The application of image analysis to both destructive and non-destructive sampling in the lysimeters is outlined. The non-destructive lysimeter studies showed that roots were significantly clumped. Analysis of root intercept and root hole counts on the faces of sample cubes taken from the lysimeters showed root distribution was anisotropic over the whole soil profile for both safflower and wheat. There were many more roots and root holes present in the sampled soil cubes than was indicated by independent sampling for washed out RLD. Safflower appeared to have a faster turnover of roots than did wheat or maize. Lysimeters, equipped with horizontal root observation tubes, enabled studies to be made of many factors affecting root growth. Soils affect where and how fast roots grow, although there is also a strong species interaction. For example, soybean roots proliferated above a fresh water table in one soil but not in another; wheat had little tendency to proliferate above the water table in either soil. In wet soils, roots cease to grow once soil oxygen levels decrease below 10 mg O2 l soil -1 . This level should form the basis for soil drainage criteria. In drying soils, roots will grow successively into soil regions containing soil water: the level of adaptation being determined by soil conditions, crop growth stage and level of evaporative demand. The methods of root observation used in our studies have given quantitative assessment of root distribution. However, further research is needed to link horizontal and vertical root distribution and root adaptation more strongly to crop development and soil conditions.

    Notes: Summary This study describes the electron microscopical distribution of free thiols and disulphides in the epidermis of the domestic pig and the wild boar, as compared to light microscopical histochemistry. With the silver methenamine method, silver labelling of thiols was clearly achieved on the keratohyalin and cytofilament accumulations in the cells of the living epidermis and the plasma membrane of granular cells. To a certain extent, the envelope and cytoplasm of young corneocytes reacted equally intensively. Disulphides were very abundant in the filaments, keratohyalin granules, and cell envelope of granular cells, and, particularly, in the envelope (marginal band) of corneal cells; the latter structure being distinctly delineated from the background. As a specific feature, the viable epidermis of the wild boar stained strongly for disulphides. The results obtained are discussed in view of actual concepts of epidermal keratinization and corneal cell function.

    Notes: Abstract We have carried out a comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation of the autoionizing collision systems He*(23 S, 21 S) + He*(23 S). We present high resolution electron energy spectra, obtained with a single He* beam (average relative collision energy 〈E rel〉=1.6 meV) and with crossed He* beams (〈E rel〉〉 =61 meV). The spectra show substantial structure, and under single beam conditions fast oscillations due to the interference of incoming and outgoing heavy particle waves in the entrance channels are observed. Accurate ab initio potential curves for the seven lowest He*—He*(Σ) molecular states have been obtained from a Feshbach projection scheme, and width functions for He*(23 S) + He*(23 S) have been derived by Stieltjes imaging. Based on these ab initio data, detailed quantum mechanical calculations of the electron spectra have been carried out and provide a thorough understanding of the experimentally observed spectral features. Good overall agreement of the calculated spectra with the experimental data is observed. The close coincidence in the positions of the experimental and theoretical peaks, especially for He*(23 S) + He*(23 S), underlines the reliability of the ab initio potentials. In the He*(21 S) + He*(23 S) electron spectrum, the dominant peak is traced to be due to autoionization from the 23Σ+ g molecular state accessed via an avoided crossing. We also present a detailed discussion of the total ionization cross sections σtot and of the fraction σAI/σtot for associative ionization together with a critical comparison with previous work. The ionization probabilities for close collisions in entrance channels, from which autoionization is spin-allowed, are near unity, and therefore the absolute values and the collision energy dependence of the total cross sections simply reflect the long-range behaviour of the excited state potentials.
