Notes: The mRNA distribution of chromogranins A and B and secretogranin II was determined in rat brain. In Northern blots the oligonucleotide probes used hybridized with single mRNA species of the expected sizes. With tissue hybridization the mRNA signals for these three proteins were found throughout the brain. However, each of the three messages had a distinct distribution, which was exemplified by the fact that in the various regions either all three proteins, a combination of two or only one of them were apparently synthesized. Significant levels of all three mRNAs were found in several regions of the hippocampus and of the amygdala, in some thalamic nuclei and in the pyriform cortex. On the other hand the subiculum contained only the message for chromogranin A, the granule cell layer of the cerebellum only that for chromogranin B, and in posterior intralaminar thalamic and medial geniculate nuclei and in the nucleus of the solitary tract only secretogranin II mRNA was found. The distinct distributions of mRNAs for the chromogranins in various brain regions support the concept that these proteins are propeptides giving rise to functionally active components.

Notes: Abstract Volumetric air sampling via the Burkard pollen and spore trap is described. The influence of meteorological factors on the occurrence of airborne pollen was investigated; the concentration of pollen grains is increased in strata of reduced vertical air exchange. A pollen flight information service has been developed since 1989 for Erfurt and other areas in the former German Democratic Republic.

Notes: Summary Analysis of human and bovine serum by immunoblotting revealed the presence of the proprotein chromogranin A. By the same method chromogranin A was also found in rat, bovine and human kidney. However this organ did not contain any chromogranin A mRNA arguing against a synthesis within this organ. By immun-electron microscopy chromogranin A immunoreactivity was found in proximal tubule cells of rat kidney. Positive immunostaining was present in small vesicles within and in close proximity to the brush border and closer to the nucleus in typical lysosomal structures. These results make it likely that chromogranin A from serum reaches kidney tubule cells by glomerular filtration and is taken up into the endocytotic lysosomal pathway.

Notes: Abstract The cluster glass Y(Fe x Al1−x )2,x=0.75, 0.65 and 0.40 was investigated in external fields between 4.5 and 13.5 T at temperatures above the freezing temperatureT f. To explain the relaxation effects, which dominate the magnetic behaviour up toT∼7·T f, a model is proposed, where magnetic clusters are formed stochastically and decay after a mean life time.

Notes: Abstract Our understanding of the biology of the rickettsiae, organisms that are the archetype of the obligate intracytoplasmic bacterial parasites, remains muddy and fragmentary. For example although we all appreciate that the rickettsiae can exploit their unique environment, the host cell cytoplasm, but are unable to grow axenically, the basis of this fact is still one of microbiology's central mysteries. It is unfortunate, but true, that because of the inherent difficulty of working within this system, progress on the answers to such questions will be slow and laborious. However, with the application of molecular biological methods, that is, the powerful modern approaches of genetics and biochemistry, the rickettsiology community has the realistic prospect that this field is far from being at a stand-still and that significant increases in our comprehension of the fundamental problems of rickettsial biology are occurring and will continue to occur at ever accelerating rates. Some examples, both in terms of scientific conclusions and technical approaches, of the progress made in recent years and expectations for the near future will be presented.

Notes: Abstract Experiments with the cyprinid fishVimba vimba as predator and the ostracodsCypridopsis vidua, Darwinula stevensoni andCytherissa lacustris as prey show that conspicuous coloration enhances predation risk for the ostracods. When the ostracods are allowed to retreat into sediment, risk is markedly reduced. ostracods show clear microhabitat preferences which are influenced by habitat structure and food supply. Exposed plant surfaces are visited only if they bear food and if the ostracods are not satiated.

Notes: The structure of mitochondrial creatine kinase is investigated by high-resolution shadowing at very low temperature and conventional negative staining. The electron microscopic images are analyzed with circular harmonic averaging, a method suited for the processing of single molecules. The rotational alignment and averaging is performed with the circular harmonic components, which allows data compression and several steps of noise reduction to be carried out within the averaging procedure. In addition, the symmetry can be deduced. For the mitochondrial creatine kinase, a fourfold symmetry is found that is compatible with the biochemical and biophysical characterization of the molecule.
