Notes: Abstract We have studied the fragmentation of Au projectiles interacting with targets of C, Al and Cu at an incident energy ofE/A=600 MeV. The employed inverse kinematics allowed a nearly complete detection of projectile fragments with chargeZ≧2. The recorded fragmentation events were sorted according to three observables, the multiplicityM lp of light charged particles, the largest atomic numberZ max within an event, and a new observable,Z bound, representing the sum of the atomic numbersZ of all fragments withZ≧2. Using these observables, the impact parameter dependence of the fragmentation process was investigated. For all three targets, a maximum mean multiplicity of 3 to 4 intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) is observed. The corresponding impact parameters range from central collisions for theC target to increasingly peripheral collisions for the heavier targets. It is found that the correlation between the IMF multiplicity andZ bound, extending from evaporation type processes (largeZ bound) to the total disassembly of the projectile (smallZ bound), is independent of the target nucleus. This universal behaviour may suggest an — at least partial — equilibration of the projectile fragment prior to its decay.

Notes: Summary The naturally synchronous development of early mouse embryos was exploited to address the question, whether micronuclei require a mitosis for expression or whether they can be expressed in the same cell cycle, in which exposure to X-rays or caffeine took place. Experiments with 2-cell and with 4-cell embryos showed that micronuclei are expressed only if a mitosis is completed. There was no indication, even after doses up to 20 Gy, that micronuclei can be expressed before the mitosis was reached, which followed exposure. Furthermore, no nuclear fragmentation pointing to apoptosis could be detected in the cycle, in which cells were exposed. The same results were obtained when caffeine (5 mM) was used as micronucleus inducing agent.

Notes: Abstract Although a large variety of biochemical effects have been reported for lithium (Li) and carbamazepine (Cbm), the final molecular mechanism underlying their therapeutic efficacy for recurrent affective disorders is still unknown. The data presented here clearly indicate that therapeutic concentrations of both drugs inhibit sodium nitroprusside-induced accumulation of cGMP in human lymphocytes to about the same extent. The effect is not seen for other antidepressants, and shows pronounced interindividual variations in healthy volunteers. A similar effect of lithium and carbamazepine can also be demonstrated for the cGMP accumulation of central neurons using the model of dissociated cells of the mouse brain. The results are discussed in view of a common mechanism of action of both drugs. Furthermore, it is speculated that the individual sensitivity of the cGMP generating system of human lymphocytes to both drugs might be used to predict therapeutic response or nonresponse of the individual patient.

Notes: Abstract In order to measure the intracranial pressure (ICP) of 8 newborn with posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (group A) we used the noninvasive technique via the anterior fontanel (Ladd monitor). The ICP was monitored in two different head positions (30° elevated, horizontal). The median measurements were: elevated head position, 13 mm Hg, horizontal head position, 16 mm Hg. For comparative reasons, we also measured the ICP of 12 healthy newborns (group B). The median results were: elevated head position, 4 mm Hg, horizontal head position, 6.5 mm Hg. Significant differences were found between groups.

Notes: Summary The effects of the atypical antidepressant levoprotiline (LPT) on inositol phosphate metabolism were investigated in N-formyl-methionyl-leucylphenylalanine (fMLP) activated human lymphocytes. In the presence of LPT, stimulation of phosphoinositide hydrolysis by fMLP lead to an increased accumulation of inositol bisphosphates, an effect which could be detected within the range of therapeutic plasma concentrations and which is exerted by lithium in a similar way. Furthermore, incubation of lymphocytes with LPT and subsequent stimulation with fMLP lead to a pronounced decrease in the level of free intracellular [3H]inositol. Both LPT effects, the increased accumulation of inositol bisphosphates and the reduction of free intracellular [3H]inositol, were found to be more pronounced for LPT than for its enantiomer (+)-oxaprotiline. The results are discussed in view of a possible biochemical mechanism which may contribute to the antidepressive activity of LPT.

Notes: Abstract A monoclonal antibody raised against membrane proteins ofToxoplasma gondii with molecular weights of 35 and 21 kDa also reacts strongly and “specifically” with surface antigens ofPneumocystis carinii with molecular weights of 394.2 and 69 kDa when used in a direct immunofluorescence antibody test, on the one hand, and in a immunoblot after sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), on the other. Whether or not this observation might have any phylogenetic relevance remains open.

Notes: Abstract The dissolution behaviour of two alloys, which represent the metallic precipitates, occurring in the dissolution step of a nuclear reprocessing plant was investigated. The solubility of these alloys, containing Mo, Ru, Rh and Pd, in HNO3-solutions is rather low and dissolution ceases after some time, caused by passivation. A significant acceleration of the dissolution rate takes place if ozone is passed through the alloy/HNO3-suspension, or if an electrolytic dissolver with or without an oxidation catalyst is used. Moreover, Ru can be separated as RuO4 by distillation.
