Notes: We have analyzed and compared the resolved shear stresses of all 12 glide systems for the 60° dislocation for 〈110〉-aligned and 〈100〉-aligned isolation trenches. From among the 12 glide systems, we select for each trench alignment the one which exhibits the highest stress level. The results for the two alignments are then compared. We find that the largest resolved shear stress for a 〈110〉-oriented trench is about 30% more than that for a 〈100〉-oriented trench from both the isotropic and the anisotropic analyses. Other factors that may cause a reduction of dislocation density for the 〈100〉-trench alignment are also discussed.

Notes: Summary Previous studies have disagreed about the presence of O-linked carbohydrate epitopes on gp 120 of HIV, although antibodies against short-chain O-linked glycans neutralize HIV infection and block syncytium formation in vitro. To settle this question, we analysed the O-linked glycans of gp 120 by chemical methods using purified HIV-1 gp 120 from cells infected with recombinant vaccinia virus solely expressing gp 160 or gp 120. Alkaline borohydride degradation of recombinant gp 120 released monosaccharides and also slightly larger structures (di/trisaccharides) by a β-elimination, confirming the presence of simple O-linked oligosaccharides. The functional activity as neutralisation epitopes of the O-linked oligosaccharides expressed on recombinant gp 120 was preserved, since fusion between uninfected CD 4+ cells and cells infected with recombinant vaccinia was blocked by monoclonal antibodies to the O-linked oligosaccharides of gp 120. Although the mechanism for HIV induction of O-linked oligosaccharide neoantigens is unknown, these results indicate that the O-linked neutralization epitopes are inherent to the glycoprotein itself, and that the unusual appearance of simple O-linked oligosaccharides on gp 120 is independent of any interaction between the host cell and retroviral genes other thanenv.

Notes: Summary The organization of the sperm cells and vegetative nucleus (male germ unit) ofNicotiana tabacum was examined 18 h after semivivo pollination using transmission electron microscopy, computerassisted serial section reconstruction and quantitative cytology. Based on a measurement of 11 cellular parameters in nine reconstructed sperm cell pairs, there are no statistically significant differences between the two cells. The Svn is characterized by a strapshaped cytoplasmic extension that is physically associated with the surface of the vegetative nucleus. The nucleus is located adjacent to the sperm crosswall, with sperm organelles being distributed between the nucleus and the extension. The Sua is a tapered cell with cytoplasmic areas at both poles and deep axial invaginations near the crosswall. This cell has a centrally-located nucleus and a largely polar distribution of organelles. Three mechanisms for cytoplasmic diminution were observed that appear to contribute actively to the loss of cytoplasmic volume and organelles: (1) enucleated cytoplasmic body production in the Sua; (2) vesiculation at the tip of the cytoplasmic projection of the Svn; and (3) vesicle-containing body accumulation in the periplasm of both the Svn and Sua.

Notes: Abstract A recent variational mechanics analysis of microcracking damage in cross-ply laminates of the form [(S)/90 n ]s , where (S) is any orthotropic sublaminate much stiffer than [90 n ], has been extended to account for the presence of delaminations emanating from the tips of microcracks in the [90 2n ] T sublaminate. The new two-dimensional stress analysis is used to calculate the total strain energy, effective modulus, and longitudinal thermal expansion coefficient for a laminate having microcracks and delaminations. These results are used to calculate the energy release rate for the initiation and growth of a delamination induced by a matrix microcrack. At low crack densities, [(S)/90 n] s laminates are expected to fail by microcracking and to show little or no delamination. At some critical crack density, which is a function of laminate structure and material properties, the energy release rate for delamination exceeds that for microcracking and delamination is predicted to dominate over microcracking. A quasi-three-dimensional model is used to predict the propagation of arbitrarily shaped delamination fronts. All predictions agree with experimental observations.
