    Notes: The effects of feeding flax, sunflower, palm and fish oils, with and without tocopherols, to laying hens was investigated on oxidative stability of cholesterol in egg yolk powders. Storage of spray-dried egg yolk powders at room temperature resulted in loss (p 〈0.05) of tocopherols. The initial levels of spray-dried yolk cholesterol oxides were 7–10 ppm and increased (p 〈0.05) with storage. The cholesterol oxide contents in the egg yolk powders were: fish 〉 flax 〉 sunflower 〉 palm. Heating egg yolk powder increased (p 〈0.05) the amounts of total cholesterol oxides. Diets with tocopherol supplementation resulted in a decrease (p 〈0.05) of cholesterol oxides during storage and heating.

    Notes: Fe/Mo multilayers have been prepared by magnetron sputtering. Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) has been found in the samples with an antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling. The magnetoresistance (MR) ratio exceeds 12% at 4.2 K, and it oscillates as a function of Mo spacer thickness. The oscillation period is about 10–12 A(ring), which is consistent with the case of the reported Kerr effect. The results suggest that the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling and the absence of GMR are the result of the sharp interfaces, and that relatively rough interfaces and moderately thin Fe layer thickness are the key factors for enhancing MR in the sputtered films. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Shielded NiO biased spin-valve tape heads with permanent magnet stabilization are described. Heads with 5 and 9 μm trackwidths, shield-to-shield spacing of 0.43 and 0.53 μm, and height of 1 μm are characterized on DLT–IV tape (0.2 μm magnetic thickness, Hc=1850 Oe, Mr.δ=6.5 memu/cm2) up to 150 kfci. Maximum head output is ∼1 mVpp/μm (3–5 mA sense current), decaying to a maximum of 23 μVpp/μm at 150 kfci (the 40–150 kfci resolution is 5%), with signal loss with linear density of 0.34 dB/kfci. Distortion level is ∼−33 dB for second and third harmonics at high linear density. Harmonic distortion above −20 dB is observed for linear density under 60 kfci due to partial head saturation. Head output is compared with a linear model. This model is used to predict head performance with smaller gaps (calculated resolution increases to 35% with 500 Å half-gap, but head efficiency decreases) and with thinner, smoother media (calculated output level at 150 kfci increases by 13 dB, and resolution increases to 14%). © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The thermal stability of TbCo exchange biased spin valve sensors has been extended to 230 °C, by using a Co pinned layer rather than NiFe. Magnetoresistance (MR) remains essentially stable up to annealing temperatures TA of 230 °C and degrades to 1% at TA=240 °C. Providing TA does not exceed 230 °C, any loss in the MR signal can be fully recovered by applying a field perpendicular to the film plane. This improved thermal stability allows processing at higher temperatures. The unidirectional exchange in the TbCo/Co interface becomes uniaxial for TA〉100 °C. Even though the unidirectional character was not recovered by any field/anneal treatment, uniaxial anisotropy above 120 Oe is maintained for TA=260 °C. Devices were fabricated using a process with a maximum temperature of 180 °C. No MR loss is found during process in test structures at wafer level. A prototype 10-μm-track width spin valve tape head for QIC applications gave a maximum output of 2.3 mVpp at 20 kfci. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract—High temperature low cycle fatigue tests, with and without strain dwells, were conducted at 750°C, 950°C and 1050°C, on single crystal SRR99 nickel base superalloy, with different crystal orientations. At 750°C, SSR99 exhibited cyclic stability regardless of cycle type. The presence of strain dwells caused cyclic softening at 950°C compared with continuous cycling tests. At 1050°C, cyclic softening was observed for all the tests. The introduction of strain dwells produced significant stress relaxation at 950°C and 1050°C, but not at 750°C for the strain ranges in this study. Significant mean stress was observed at the three temperatures for tests with tensile or compressive strain dwells. The crystal orientation was found to have a dominating influence on the cyclic stress strain relationship and stress relaxation response. A simple approach is developed to correlate the effect of orientation on the cyclic mechanical response.

    Notes: Abstract—Experimental and theoretical investigations on the influence of temperature, strain dwells and crystal orientation on the high temperature fatigue-creep life behaviour of single crystal SRR99 nickel base superalloy were performed. For a given temperature and loading condition, the longest fatigue life was observed for tests with [001] orientations, while the [111] orientation yielded the shortest fatigue life. A simple approach, using an orientation function f(AhkI), was applied successfully to correlate the influence of orientation. Using this function, the shortest fatigue life was observed for tests with a compressive dwell at 750°C, but at 1050°C tests with a tensile dwell exhibited the shortest life. Compared with continuous cycling tests, tests with tensile dwells showed remarkably longer lives at 750°C, significantly shorter lives at 1050°C, and almost identical lives at 950°C; tests with compressive dwells always exhibited shorter lives than continuous cycling tests at all temperatures. The influence of strain dwells on the life of SRR99 was via the simultaneous effects of mean stress, additional inelastic strain, and time dependent damage. A mean stress modified strain range partitioning method was proposed and used to predict the fatigue-creep life.

    Notes: Projectiles of sintered tungsten alloy were fired directly at two kinds of steel target plates. The microstructures near the perforation of a medium, 0.45% carbon steel target plate can be identified along the radial direction as: melted and rapidly solidified layer, recrystallized fine-grained layer, deformed fine-grained layer, deformed layer and normal matrix. The adiabatic shear bands cannot be found in this intermediate strength steel. The microstructures along the radial direction of perforation of 30CrMnMo steel target plate are different from that of the medium carbon steel. There was a melted and rapidly solidified layer on the surface of the perforation, underneath there was a diffusing layer, and then fine-grained layer appeared as streamlines. Several kinds of adiabatic shear bands were found in this higher strength steel; they had different directions and widths, which were relative to the shock waves, as well as the complex deformation process of penetration. The deformation of the projectiles was rather different when they impacted on target plates of medium carbon steel and 30CrMnMo steel. The projectile that impacted on the medium carbon steel target plate was tamped and its energy dissipated slowly, while that which impacted on the 30CrMnMo steel target plate was sheared and the energy dissipated quickly.
