Notes: Abstract It has long been recognized thatμLCR could profitably be done with the high intensity surface beam at LAMPF [1]. A spectrometer has been built that is matched to the LAMPF beam characteristics. The polarization information is obtained from a downstream array of counters while side counters, containing no polarization signal, monitor theμ + beam. Degraders select higher energy e+, thereby reducing rates and required counter segmentation while maintaining information content. We apply a ramped longitudinal field in addition to the static one to average over instabilities in theμ + beam. This field scan allows direct interpretation of data and does not require a prior estimate of the resonance structure of a sample. Flux coils monitor the applied ramp field and eddy-current induced fields. High average rate (2×107 μ +/s). good stability, and the versatile field scan permitted useful data to be collected from Cu, Al(Cu), Al, Si(Al), and polycrystalline Si targets.

Notes: Abstract Catalytic behavior of a magnesium-copper intermetallic alloy, Mg2Cu, in the hydrogenation of acetone has been studied in the temperature range of 393–423 K. A continuous flow type reaction was employed. Mg2Cu showed good catalytic activity with 2-propanol as the only product. A plausible mechanism for the mode of adsorption of acetone is proposed.

Notes: Abstract Decompositon of 2-propanol has been carried out on the hydrogen storage material Mg2Cu and its modified form (OH−Mg2Cu) to study their catalytic behavior. The reaction was carried out in a continuous flow type reactor in the temperature range of 403–513 K at various flow rates. Mg2Cu showed good catalytic activity with large amounts of condensation products. Its modified form gave acetone as the only products. The reason for these differences is explained in terms of differences in the structure of the catalyst as determined by XRD and XPS, as well as by surface area measurements. The reason for the formation of condensation products is discussed.

Notes: Cardanyl acrylate/methacrylate on suspension polymerization with methyl methacrylate, styrene, and acrylonitrile yielded copolymer beads. The beads were almost uniform in size and cross-linked in nature. The copolymers synthesized were characterized by infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron and optical microscopy, and swelling studies. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Phenolic resins with improved/altered thermal stability and flame retardancy were prepared by introducing flame retardant elements such as phosphorus and bromine at the monomer stage, followed by condensation with formaldehyde or hexamethylene tetramine (HMTA). Thus, monophenyl phosphoric acid (MPPA), monophenyl phosphoric acid-formaldehyde resin (MPPAF), brominated phenol-formaldehyde resin (BrPF) and 2,4,6-tribromophenyl-phosphoric acid-formaldehyde resin (BrMPPAF) were prepared and characterised. Thermal stability and flammability of these polymers were evaluated by TGA and LOI respectively and compared with those of phenol-formaldehyde resin (PF) and phosphorylated phenol-formaldehyde resin (PPF). The TGA (in air) of MPPAF showed enhanced thermal stability (char yield 66%) over that of PF (char yield 52%) and PPF (char yield 58%) indicating the role of phosphorus in imparting thermo-oxidative resistance to PF. The enhancement is better when phosphorus is introduced at the monomer stage. The incorporation of bromine, however, brought about an unexpected reduction in the thermal stability of PF (char yield: BrPF, 2% and BrMPPAF, 26%). Both phosphorus and bromine are found to enhance the LOI values of PF (cured) from 35 to 50, 48, and 56, respectively, for MPPAF, BrPF, and BrMPAFF. A comparison of LOI values of these resins with their char yield suggests a condensed phase mechanism for phosphorus and vapor phase mechanism for bromine operating during thermal decomposition. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The chemical crosslink density (CLD) and network structure of natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates, modified with phosphorylated cardanol prepolymer (PCP), have been studied by equilibrium swelling and other chemical methods. The PCP-modified NR vulcanizates showed lower CLD, as compared to the unmodified NR samples, the decrease being lesser for the semiefficient vulcanization (SEV) system, as compared to the conventional (CV) and efficient (EV) vulcanization system. The superior tensile characteristics of the PCP-modified vulcanizates of the SEV system is presumed to be partly due to the presence of an entangled network structure between the aliphatic segment of PCP and the isoprene chains, as evident from X-ray diffraction studies. The critical role of Zn++ions in the crosslinking reactions, especially at higher concentrations of PCP, was evident from the increase in CLD at higher concentrations of ZnO. The reduction in the IR absorption intensity, in the presence of ZnO, indicated the probable complex formation of Zn++ions with the phosphate groups of PCP. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The use of one-dimensional total correlation spectroscopy (1D TOCSY) combined with the z-filtration technique to generate pure phase subspectra of individual isomers from the spectrum of the corresponding mixture without any chemical separation of the mixture is described. A straightforward spectral assignment is achieved for the isomers obtained on lithium aluminium hydride reduction of 2,7-dioxatetracyclo[3.3.04,9.08,11] undeca-3,6-dione (dilactone) by studying the subspectrum of each isomer as a function of the propagation time of magnetization through the network of coupled protons.
