Notes: NdSrBaCu3O6+z prepared in air followed by oxygen annealing showed a Tc of 68 K. The Tc of the sample when treated in argon followed by oxygen annealing increased by 10 K. This could be related to the observed shrinking of the c axis and/or a rearrangement of oxygen atoms in the basal plane.

Notes: Abstract We report on a boy who developed proximal renal tubular acidosis with loss of carnitine at the age of about 6 months. A few months later he began to suffer from progressive muscular weakness and neurological disturbances. Blood biochemistry showed elevated lactate and β-hydroxybutyrate with increased lactate/pyruvate and β-hydroxybutyrate/acetoacetate ratios. A high urinary excretion of lactate and citric acid cycle intermediates was found. These results indicated a defect of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Analysis of biopsy material from skeletal muscle revealed low activities of all respiratory chain complexes. In muscle and fibroblasts cytochrome c-oxidase (complex IV) was absent. Despite high dose multi-vitamin therapy the boy died at the age of 30 months from central respiratory failure. At autopsy the neuropathological diagnosis of Leigh disease was made.

Notes: Abstract A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane (BHC), phorate, carbofuran, and fenvalerate, at their recommended doses, on some chemical and microbiological properties of the rhizosphere soil in relation to rice yields. In general, the insecticides had a beneficial effect on rhizosphere soil properties. Carbofuran strongly stimulated the mineralization of organic C. BHC and phorate led to the retention of less total N in the soil. BHC released more NH inf4 sup+ -N than the other insecticides. Phorate, however, liberated the most NO inf3 sup- -N. Phorate and fenvalerate released more available P than BHC and carbofuran did. All the insecticides stimulated the proliferation of aerobic non-symbiotic N2-fixing and phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms, resulting in an overall increase in rice yield. BHC had the greatest effect on rice yields, followed by phorate.

Notes: Summary Time-dependent perturbation theory has been applied to calculate the doubly excited triplet statesNsns:3Se,Npnp:3De andNdnd:3Ge (N=2, 3, 4,n=N+1, ... ,5) for He, Li+, Be2+ and B3+. A time-dependent harmonic perturbation causes simulataneous excitation of both the electrons with a change of spin state. The doubly excited energy levels have been identified as the poles of an appropriately constructed linearized variational functional with respect to the driving frequency. In addition to the transition energies, effective quantum numbers of these doubly excited states have been calculated and analytic representations of their wave functions are obtained. These are utilized to estimate the Coulomb repulsion term for these states which checks the consistency of the wave functions. These wave functions may also be used for calculating other physical properties of the systems.

Notes: Abstract Several M dopants such as Al, Fe, and Co at the Cu site destroy the superconductivity of YBa2Cu3O6+z . However, superconductivity is restored by substituting Ca at the Y site. Arguments are developed to show that the oxygen chain disorder is not the only cause for destroying the superconductivity. A universal relation seems to exist between the net hole density as a result of Ca substitution andT c . To stabilize the perovskite structure of YSr2Cu3O6+z , it is necessary to substitute Cu by certain elements. Examples are given on Ti and Re substitution. Again, Ca cosubstitution increasesT c . Further, the irreversibility line is enhanced by Ca, indicating improved pinning in these materials in spite of the oxygen disorder.

Notes: Abstract Therelativistic lattice Klein-Gordon equation, Dirac equation, electromagnetic equations, and gauge field equations are presented as partialdifference equations. Various lattice Green's functions are constructed (except for non-abelian gauge fields). It is proved that many of the lattice Green's functions are non-singular or divergence-free. Moreover, it is conjectured that all lattice Green's functions are non-singular.

Notes: Abstract A new representation of quantum mechanics involving finite difference operators is presented. The time-dependent Schrödinger wave equation is furnished as a partialdifference-differential equation. This wave equation is solved exactly for a three-dimensional oscillator. It is emphasized that this representation is exact and not a numerical approximation.

Notes: Summary The dynamic in-plane problem of the non-symmetric extension of a crack in an infinite, isotropic elastic medium under normal stress is analyzed. Following Cherepanov [8], Cherepanov and Afanas'ev [9] the general solution of the problem is derived in terms of an analytic function of complex variable. The results include the expressions for the stress intensity factors at the crack tips and the rate of energy flux into the cxtending crack edges. For a particular case, numerical calculations for the stress intensity factor and the energy flux rate are carried out.
