Notes: The magnetic properties of CoCrPt/CoCrPtSi dual-magnetic-layered thin films are investigated in terms of the crystalline microstructures using a vibrating-sample magnometer, transmission electron microscope, and scanning electron microscope. The magnetic crystal grains of the films are aligned with forming chainlike clusters. Each stacked magnetic crystal grain is epitaxially grown on individually isolated columnar Cr crystals with a relationship of hcp (101¯1)Co-based alloy //bcc (110)Cr. The direction of magnetic easy axes of two stacked magnetic crystals are aligned in a same direction. Single-crystalline dual-magnetic-layered thin films, which are epitaxially grown on MgO(110) single-crystal substrates, are prepared to estimate the Ku of the dual-layered magnetic grains. The Ku is determined to be 4×106 erg/cm3, whose value is about 2 times as large as that of single-layered CoCrPtSi. This large anisotropy energy is presumed to lead the increase of Hc in the dual-layered magnetic films.

Notes: Preirradiation using vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) beams of anti-Stokes stimulated Raman scattering VUV laser, followed by the fundamental beam (266 nm) irradiation, provides a novel scheme for fused quartz ablation. The preirradiation of 5th- (171 nm) or 6th- (160 nm) order anti-Stokes beams realizes significant ablation with the succeeding fundamental beam irradiation of a laser fluence less than the ablation threshold. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals that SiOx(x 〈 2) is created in the fused quartz by photolysis using the anti-Stokes beams. Each effect of the preirradiation and the succeeding fundamental beam irradiation in the ablation process is discussed.

Notes: The tissue density of eosinophils and the degree of activation of eosinophils in the nasal mucosa of allergic and nonallergic rhinopathic patients were studied by a combination of the immunogold method, which uses EG2 antibody which binds to the secreted form of eosinophils, and the Luna method. The tissue density of eosinophils and the degree of EG2-positivity were higher in the allergic nasal mucosa than in the nonallergic nasal mucosa. The eosinophils in the tissue were mainly EG2-positive in contrast with those in the vessels. Epithelial shedding was rarely observed and was not related to the tissue density of eosinophils or EG2-positivity. Our results suggest that the eosinophils in the allergic nasal mucosa are activated in the tissue, not in the vessel.
