Notes: Among the various nondestructive testing methods, the electric potential method requires relatively simple device and measurement. However, because of the high electrical contact resistance, sometimes it is difficult to measure the correct local electric potentials by direct contact. In order to overcome this difficulty, method is proposed which involves substituting the local magnetic field for electric potential measurements. The comparison with the conventional electric potential method demonstrates the usefulness this method, especially for materials with low resistivity.

Notes: Previously, we have proposed a strategic dual image (SDI) method to obtain the finite element solution of open boundary magnetic field problems. Also, we have derived a complex permeability from a Chua-type magnetization model. Combination of this complex permeability with the SDI method is now applied to exploit a new high frequency characteristic measurement device for thin magnetic films. Numerical simulation suggests that our new measurement method yields far superior results compared with those of the conventional one.

Notes: Polyphase eddy current testing is proposed. The operating principle of this system is as follows. The polyphase eddy current testing system may be regarded as one of the polyphase transformers. Primary balanced polyphase coils are star connected and secondary polyphase circuits are composed of the target. When balanced polyphase currents are fed into the primary coils, zero phase voltage is detected if the target has defects. No zero phase voltage is detected if the target has no defects. It is found that this method has a higher sensitivity compared with that of conventional eddy current testing.

Notes: Four types of L-tryptophan lots produced by genetically modified B. myloliquefaciens strains II-V, which consisted of case-associated (11) with manifestations of EMS, control (16), and other lots (11), were compared by multivariate computer recognition programs (chemometrics) including HCA, PCA, KNN and SIMCA, as well as PLS. In HCA data analysis lots from strains III and V formed discrete clusters, and in PCA and SIMCA, both lots formed separated groups. Lots from strains II and IV were included in a group of lots from strain III. This indicated strains II and IV too were closely related to strain III. When strain vs case-associated control or other lots were compared by four methods, SIMCA provided adequate strain separation and strains were well grouped in case-associated or control lots.

Notes: Abstract To assess the feasibility and efficacy of rhGM-CSF in ameliorating chemotherapy-induced leukopenia in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer, we conducted a double-blind placebo controlled phase III study in a multicenter setting. Patients were eligible if they had cytologically or histologically proven cancer, no prior chemotherapy, stage IIIB or IV disease, an Eastern Cooperativve Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status of 0–2, an age of less than 76 years, and no symptomatic brain metastasis, disseminated bone metastasis, or previous vertebral/pelvic irradiation. The chemotherapy regimen consisted of mitomycin given at 8 mg/m2 on day 1, cisplatin given at 100 mg/m2 on day 1, and vindesine given at 3 mg/m2 i.v. on days 1 and 8 (MVP). If the granulocyte nadir count recorded after the first cycle of MVP was less than 1,000/mm3, patients were randomly assigned to receive recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colonystimulating factor (rhGM-CSF) or placebo during the second cycle of MVP. The dose of rhGM-CSF was 125 μg/m2 given daily s.c. for 14 consecutive days starting on day 2. Of the 52 patients enrolled, 45 were evaluable. The nadir of granulocytes was significantly lower in the placebo group (P=0.007). The period during which the granulocyte count was less than 1,000/mm3 was significantly longer in the placebo group (median, 6 vs 10 days;P=0.04). The incidence of adverse effects related to rhGM-CSF, such as fever (≥38°C) and skin rash, was significantly higher in the rhGM-CSF group (P=0.011). The rate of response to chemotherapy did not significantly differ between the two groups. In conclusion, rhGM-CSF reduced the duration of chemotherapy-induced granulocytopenia. The clinical usefulness of this agent may be deminished because of the adverse effects encountered when it is used in combination with a moderately myelotoxic chemotherapy regimen.

Notes: Abstract To determine how and when the satellite cells are stimulated to replicate in muscle regeneration, the rat soleus muscle was examined chronologically after bupivacaine-induced myonecrosis. Bromodeoxyuridine and desmin-positive mononuclear cells, indicating the start of satellite cell replication, were seen 25 h after bupivacaine treatment when macrophages had already invaded the sarcoplasm of necrotic fiber. These findings suggest that muscle regeneration starts as early as the time at which macrophages begin to scavenge necrotic material. Proliferating myoblasts increased in number, reaching a maximum at 49 h after myonecrosis, and decreased in number 3 days after the myoblasts fused with each other to form myotubes. The satellite cell proliferation after bupivacaine-induced myonecrosis began at almost the same time as in crush injury, and earlier than after muscle transplantation using whole intact or minced muscle fragments. The earlier begining and more rapid regenerating process probably resulted from the preservation of intact satellite cells, blood vessels and peripheral nerves in the bupivacaine-induced myonecrosis.

Notes: Summary The effect of column temperature, especially at low temperatures, on the separation of fullerenes on monomeric and polymeric octadecyl silica (ODS) bonded phases has been studied. Decreasing the column temperature induces an increase in selectivity. The best temperature for the separation of fullerenes was determined for both types of ODS phase with n-hexane eluent. The selectivity for higher fullerenes on monomeric phases becomes similar to that on polymeric phases to low temperature. It has been found that as the carbon content of monomeric phases is increased, the selectivity also becomes similar to polymeric phases.

Notes: Abstract Spherical polycrystalline particles of Na4Zr2Si3O12 (NZS) have been prepared by a mist pyrolysis technique with alkoxide ethanol solution. Firing the precursor particles, obtained by pyrolysing at 550 °C, yielded the NZS with the highest S/N ratio and the least second phase at ∼ 1000 °C. Each spherical particle with an average size of ∼ 0.5 μm was composed of primary particles of 0.1 μm diameter after firing. Comparing the particle formation process with the sol-gel, alkoxide pyrolysis and the aqueous solution processes, it would appear that the primary particle size of the mist-pyrolysed NZS depends on the size and residual alkyl group content of the precursor polymers.
