Notes: Thermal stress in GaN epitaxial layers with different thicknesses grown on sapphire substrates by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy using an AlN buffer layer was investigated. Biaxial compressive stress in the GaN layer, due to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficients between GaN and sapphire, was obtained by measuring the curvature of wafer bending, and the observed stress agreed with the calculated stress. In Raman measurements, the E2 phonon peak of GaN was found to shift and broaden with the stress as a consequence of the change of the elastic constants with strain. The frequency shift Δω (in cm−1) was obtained for the first time, given by the relation: Δω=6.2 σ, where the biaxial stress σ is expressed in GPa. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Production of tissue factor (TF) in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was examined in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) transfected with human CD14 DNA. The expression of CD14 on HUVECs dramatically enhanced the production of TF at a low concentration of LPS in the absence of fetal calf serum (FCS). On the other hand, mock-transfected HUVECs did not respond to even a high concentration of LPS. TF production in CD14-expressing HUVECs was significantly inhibited by anti-CD14 monoclonal antibody. Addition of FCS to the culture of CD14-expressing HUVECs markedly augmented the LPS-induced TF production, whereas only a marginal effect was observed in mock-transfected HUVECs. The findings suggested that the integration of membrane CD14 rendered HUVECs highly sensitive to LPS in the production of TF irrespective of the presence of FCS.

Notes: Abstract Administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into mice markedly induced the apoptosis of CD4+8+ thymocytes. The injection of anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α antibody or RU38486, a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist, into mice definitely inhibited LPS-induced apoptosis of thymocytes. Addition of the sera 1 h after injection of LPS into in vitro cultures of thymocytes caused thymocyte apoptosis. It was also prevented by either anti-TNF-α antibody or RU38486. Further, recombinant TNF-α and hydrocortisone collaborated in induction of the thymocyte apoptosis in vitro. The in vivo phenomenon of LPS-induced apoptosis of thymocytes was reproducible by the in vitro experimental system. It was therefore suggested that both TNF-α and glucocorticoid participate and collaborate as effector molecules in LPS-induced apoptosis of thymocytes.
