Notes: The development of storage rings for synchrotron radiation have now arrived at so-called third-generation and have straight sections with optical functions optimized for undulators and electron beams of very small emittances. The beam optics of the ring is chosen so as to minimize the quantum excitation of betatron oscillations which determine the emittance. This can be achieved with a ring containing many cells with a small bending angle and with strong focusing in each cell. The first point results in large and expensive rings and both points require strong sextupole magnets for the chromaticity correction which can limit the dynamic acceptance. The optimization of storage rings with these points in mind lead to lattices which have achromatic cells with two, three, or more bending magnets. Studies for future rings consider further methods like the use of wigglers, combined function magnets, increased transverse damping partitions, etc. in order to obtain even smaller emittances which approach the diffraction limit. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The velocities of neutral and charged photofragments of the rare gas trimers He+3, Ar+3, and Xe+3 have been examined in a comprehensive study for photon energies ranging from 1.5 to 6 eV. For this purpose, a novel time-of-flight technique has been applied which allows the simultaneous examination of both neutral and charged fragments. The general fragmentation pattern of all three species was that of a linear trimer with a parallel transition moment and a totally repulsive excited state: In the course of the dissociation, two of the particles gain high velocities in opposite directions, while the third particle (the middle particle of the linear trimer) only obtains a small velocity. The positive charge generally localizes on one of the fast outer particles, as can be expected from the symmetry properties of the excited state. For Ar+3 and Xe+3, however, also localization of the charge on the slow particle can be observed. This effect strongly depends on the energy of the absorbed photon, and can be quenched by decreasing the vibrational excitation of the trimer. Comparison of the results with new potential energy surface calculations indicate that mainly spin–orbit coupling induced conical intersections are responsible for this charge redistribution phenomenon. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] Hydrous, silica-rich melts migrating through the mantle are preserved as glass inclusions in mantle minerals in xenoliths from Philippine arc lavas. These melts, with chemistries that indicate an origin by very low degrees of melting of the subducted ocean crust, have altered their host ...

Notes: Abstract Turbidity measurements by foreward scattering nephelometer have been regularly conducted on the north basin of Lake Lugano (Switzerland/Italy) since September 1992. In order to determine mass concentrations from these data, both, in-situ and laboratory calibration experiments have been performed in November and December 1992 on suspended matter of the hypolimnion. Results show: 1. Mass concentration/turbidity ratios are different in the two turbidity zones examined due to variation in the optical signature of the suspended matter. 2. Laboratory calibrations using suspended matter originating from the water depths of interest give representative results provided that physical and chemical alterations occuring during the particle transfer process remain negligible.

Notes: Abstract It is now widely accepted that describing and labeling of chemicals as developmental toxicants on a purely qualitative basis does not make sense. Agents possessing the potential to induce reproductive or developmental toxicity present a risk of human harm only under certain conditions. This critical fact cannot be properly communicated with a simple designation as “positive” or “negative”. Rather, a number of parameters that deal with dose or concentration, frequency, duration and route of exposure must also be conveyed. Unsubstantiated blacklisting is equally counterproductive for preventive medicine as downplaying of the toxicity of chemicals. Gender-based restrictions on exposure at workplaces of women of child-bearing age are neither socially acceptable nor scientifically justifiable. Therefore, the German Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area published in 1983 a quantitatively based classification concept, which became effective in 1985 and was modified in the following years. The present contribution summarizes what is required for an integrated judgment on the relevance of laboratory and epidemiological data for predicting the potential risk associated with exposure at workplaces to occupational chemicals. Methyl mercury, carbon disulfide, dimethylformamide, ethanol, toluene,N,N-dimethyl acetamide, nitrous oxide, methanol, ethyl benzene, and phosphorus pentoxide will be described as examples of classified substances.

Notes: Abstract This report summarizes the procedure for providing the absolute energy calibration of the LEP beams during the energy scan in 1993. The average beam energy around the LEP ring was measured in 25 calibrations with the resonant depolarization technique. The time variation of this average beam energy is well described by a model of the accelerator based on monitored quantities. The absolute calibration of the centre of mass energies of the off-peak points is determined with a precision of 2 parts in 105 resulting in a systematic error on the Z-mass of about 1.4 MeV and on the Z-width of about 1.5 MeV.
