    Notes: The dc electrical transport properties of the nonconventional lead cuprate glasses of compositions (CuO)x(PbO)100−x for x=15–50 mol % are reported in the temperature range 150–500 K. The experimental results have been analyzed in the light of existing theoretical models. It has been observed that the high-temperature conductivity data are consistent with Mott's nearest-neighbor hopping model, while at low temperatures Mott's variable-range-hopping model fits the data very well. The polaron hopping models of Schnakenberg and Emin can predict the conductivity data in the entire temperature range of measurement. The percolation model of Triberis and Friedman is not consistent with the experimental results. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Measurements are reported for the electrical dc conductivity of the semiconducting vanadium tellurite glasses containing P2O5, Sb2O3, or Bi2O3 in the temperature range 80–450 K. The experimental data have been analyzed in the light of existing theoretical models. It has been observed that the general behavior of the electrical conductivity is similar for all glass compositions. The high temperature conductivity data are consistent with Mott's models of phonon-assisted polaronic hopping in the nonadiabatic regime, while at low temperatures variable range hopping is valid. The small polaron hopping model of Schnakenberg is the best model to interpret the temperature dependence of the activation energy and the conductivity in the entire temperature range. The percolation model applied to the polaron hopping regime is also found to be consistent with the temperature dependence of the conductivity data at high and low temperatures. The various parameters obtained by fitting these models to the experimental data are found to depend on glass forming oxides other than the vanadium oxide. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract We report here the occurrence of, to date, the largest (21 × 10 × 8 mm) phillipsite crystal forming the nucleus of a diagenetically formed ferromanganese nodule from the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB). Assuming an average rate of ferromanganese nodule accretion as ~ 2 mm/Ma and that of phillipsite growth as ~ 0.65 mm/Ka, the nucleus material appears to have been growing for ~4.5–5 Ma. Originally surfaced as a rock fragment from late Miocene volcanism, this nucleus was later altered to phillipsite under alkaline, silica-undersaturated, low-temperature conditions through the length of the Neogene sedimentary hiatus.

    Notes: Summary Nucleotide sequences of rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV) genome segment 9 (S9) from a Thai and an Indian isolate were determined. Both sequences are 1132 bp long, contain a single large open reading frame (ORF) spanning nucleotide residues 14 to 1027 and are capable of encoding a protein of 38.5K. The two isolates are 94.6% and 99.4% identical at the nucleotide and amino acid level, respectively. The authenticity of these coding sequences was confirmed by identifying a ∼38K protein in the RRSV particle with an N-terminal amino acid sequence identical to that inferred from the S9 ORF. Furthermore, cDNA of S9 from each isolate incorporated into the bacterial expression vector pGEX3-X produced a fusion protein that reacted with antibodies raised against purified RRSV particles. Cleaving these fusion proteins with protease factor X liberated a ∼38K polypeptide.

    Notes: Abstract A field experiment was conducted for four years with Kanva-2 variety of mulberry, pre-inoculated with Glomus fasciculatum and Glomus mosseae at various doses of single super phosphate to examine their effect on plant growth, leaf yield and quality. The pooled data for 4 years revealed that the effect of inoculation of mulberry with Glomus mosseae in combination with 30 kg P ha-1 yr-1 was similar for plant growth, leaf yield and leaf chemical constituents with the control, which received the full dose of phosphatic fertilizer (120 kg P ha-1 yr-1) without inoculation. This indicated a possibility to reduce phosphate fertilization in mulberry cultivation by 75%. Silkworm rearing (moulting test) also did not reveal any significant difference in the leaf quality even after reducing phosphorus application by 75% in mulberry inoculated with either Glomus mosseae or Glomus fasciculatum when compared with control. The root colonization was significantly higher in VAM inoculation at the lower levels of phosphorus compared to uninoculated control receiving the full dose of phosphate fertilizer (120 kg P ha-1 yr-1) suggesting that low phosphorus levels in soil promote better VA-mycorrhizal symbiosis in mulberry.

    Notes: Abstract Shigella dysenteriae type 1, isolated locally, was found to contain six plasmids and these could be eliminated using SDS. A 70-kb plasmid was necessary to maintain the normal cell-wall morphology. Synthesis of nine major membrane proteins (90 to 40 kDa) was severely impaired in all-plasmid cured strains. Electron microscopy revealed a prominent separation between the outer and inner membranes of the cured strains, indicating that plasmid loss led to defects in the cell envelope. The growth rates of the strains having only the 70-kb plasmid and the plasmidless strain were 3- to 30-fold less than in the wild type strain.

    Notes: Abstract Invasion plasmid antigen C (IpaC), a 45-kDa protein encoded by an invasion plasmid of Shigella, is associated with the invasion of epithelial cells by the bacteria. Invasive strains of S. dysenteriae type 1 secreted more proteins into the extracellular environment than a non-invasive strain and secreted more IpaC protein. An anti-IpaC mouse monoclonal antibody was used as a probe to determine the subcellular localization of IpaC and its involvement in invasion of mammalian cells. Immunogold labelling of ultrathin sections of invasive bacteria indicated that the IpaC was only present in the cytoplasmic membrane and cytoplasm. There were no gold-IgG particles on the bacterial surface. Immunoblot analysis of different cellular fractions confirmed that the protein was associated with the inner cytoplasmic membrane and cytosolic fraction. The in-vitro binding capability of the IpaC protein was assessed using HeLa and isolated rat intestinal epithelial cells. The binding of the protein to the surface of mammalian cells indicates that it may have a role in the early stages of the infection process. The binding was sensitive to the action of proteolytic enzymes.
