Notes: Abstract Occurrence of the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) form of microorganisms in nature is well known. Evidence available in the literature indicates that low temperature may induce microorganisms to form VBNC cells. The VBNC state of some bacteria, collected from Antarctic lakes, has been recently reported. Hence it is postulated that formation of VBNC cells may be one of the strategies adopted by Antarctic microorganisms to survive in the extreme cold climate.

Notes: Abstract Eight psychrotrophic strains belonging to four different genera were screened for the presence of cold-active alkaline phosphatase in sonicated cell homogenates. An approximately 1000-fold higher activity than E. coli was detected in two psychrotrophic strains of Sphingobacterium antarcticus and one mesophilic strain of Flavobacterium multivorum. The enzymes from the psychrotrophs showed maximum activity at 37°C and were also found to be active at 0°C. Alkaline phosphatase from one psychrotrophic Sphingobacterium lost 97% of its activity when it was heated for 10 min at 62°C. This enzyme was partially purified and characterised. The production of the enzyme was repressed when the organism was grown in the presence of phosphates and its activity was inhibited on preincubation with inorganic phosphates and ethylene diamine tetracetic acid. Potassium permanganate and potassium periodate did not inhibit the activity of the enzyme. The biotechnological importance of the enzyme is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The alternating current losses have been investigated at 77 K on the silver-sheathed (Bi, Pb)-2223 multifilamentary tape having 37 filaments using an inductive technique under ac magnetic field with frequencies between 100 and 510 Hz. The measured data on the multifilamentary tape have been discussed vis-à-vis that reported for monofilamentary tapes. The results obtained could be accounted fairly well by considering contributions from the eddy current losses in the silver matrix along with the hysteresis losses in the superconducting filaments.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the thermoelectric power of calcium substituted YBa2−x Ca x Cu3O7−δ pellets with 0≤x≥1.5 is presented between 60 K and 300 K. A metal–insulator transition was reported earlier by us in this system and was attributed to the ionic size-dependent localization effect. While the sign of thermoelectric power of all the calcium substituted samples was found to be positive, its magnitude increases significantly with calcium content in YBCO. The normal state thermoelectric power data of substituted YBa2−x Ca x Cu3O7−δ (0≤x≥1.5) are discussed in light of a two-band model originally proposed by Gottwick et al. for heavy fermion systems and later modified by Forro et al.

Notes: Abstract After the advent of high temperature superconductors (HTSC), much research and development have been carried out and currently these materials are on the verge of being used in the power engineering applications at a commercial scale. In such applications, the ac losses of superconductors are regarded as one of the most important design parameters that guide the fabrication of the devices. There are different methods for the determination of such losses. This article describes some of the widely used methods and discusses the results on the ac losses of bulk HTSC compounds and single and multifilamentary tapes. The nature and origin of the losses in these materials and their dependence on various physical entities like applied field, frequency, and temperature have also been dealt with in detail. Gap areas have also been identified in which further research is needed in order to facilitate the design and fabrication of commercially usable devices with superior performance.

Notes: Abstract Thermal conductivity measurements have been taken between 20 and 300 K on composites prepared from polyethylene glycol (PEG) containing various amounts of superconducting (Bi,Pb)2223 powder. The nature of temperature variation of thermal conductivity (λC) of the composites and its magnitude depend strongly on the volume concentration of the high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) filler present in the material. The results have been discussed in the light of models known for polymer–metal powder composites. It is shown that for composites with 2223 powder content 〈44 vol. %, the measured data can be accounted well with Hamilton–Crosser model, taking the sphericity factor into consideration. Failure of Hamilton–Crosser expression for composites with higher filler concentration is thought to be associated with direct contact between the superconducting grains, which shortcircuits the acoustic mismatch resistance in the composites.

Notes: Summary Mutants of Escherichia coli K-12 resistant to a threonine analogue (α-amino-β-hydroxy valeric acid) were predominantly resistant to ethionine and overproduced both threonine and methionine (2 mg/ml each). Novelty of the mutants is discussed.
