    Notes: The effects due to intersubband coupling and screening on the ionized impurity scattering are studied for a quasi-two-dimensional electron system in δ-doped semiconductors. We found that intersubband coupling plays an essential role in describing the screening properties and the effect of ionized impurity scattering on the mobility in a multisubband system. At the onset of the occupation of a higher subband, the screening due to the intersubband coupling leads to a reduction of the small angle scattering rate in the lower subband. We showed that such an effect is significant in a δ-doped quantum well and results in a pronounced increase of the quantum mobility at the onset of the occupation of a higher subband. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the potential usefulness of conjoint analysis for organizational research, as evidenced in estimating the compensating wage differential of the four-day workweek. Five hundred and seventeen employees of an insurance company on the four-day workweek rated their preferences for increments and decrements in compensation and vacation time on both a four-day and five-day workweek. The data were analysed via conjoint analysis. The results revealed the four-day workweek schedule had a positive compensating wage differential of approximately US$1161, or about 6% of the sample's annual salary. The findings were discussed in terms of the prospects of using conjoint analysis for organizational research, including means of data collection, stimulus construction, parameter estimation methods, reliability, validity and computer-interactive systems.

    Notes: A cesium sputter, negative ion source was developed and built at Triumf. While designed for accelerator mass spectrometry, it can be applied in any field requiring intensive negative ion beams covering the whole range from hydrogen to uranium. The source features an internal cesium oven and simplified target insulation. A pneumatically actuated target changer contains a 28-sample wheel but allows manual placing of single samples as well. In initial runs the source produced over 1 μA of 40CaH−3 and .25 μA of 27Al− beams. The construction of the source and the operation of the sample changer are discussed in this article. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Frege's account of opacity is based on two attractive ideas: every meaningful expression has a sense (Sinn) that determines the expression's semantic value (Bedeutung); and the semantic value of a‘that’-clause is the thought expressed by its embedded sentence. Considerations of compositionality led Frege to a more problematic view: inside ‘that’-clauses, an expression does not have its customary Bedeutung. But contrary to initial appearances, compositionality does not entail a familiar substitutivity principle. And Fregeans can exploit this point in a way that lets them reject Bedeutung-shifting.

    Notes: The influence of ion bombardment during microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on diamond film orientation has been investigated. Two interesting findings were obtained: (1) The [001] axes of the grown diamond grains are always along the ion flow direction, perpendicular to the substrate and independent of the crystal orientation of the substrates and (2) for the crystallites which are homoepitaxially grown on the (001) diamond faces parallel to the substrate slight misorientations were found. These new findings confirm the role of ion impact in diamond CVD and can help us to understand the basic mechanism responsible for the crystal orientation in heteroepitaxial diamond films prepared using bias-enhanced nucleation. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: It is demonstrated that the microscopic mechanism of the photorefractive (PR) effect in organic composites with low glass transition temperatures involves the formation of refractive index gratings through a space-charge field-modulated Kerr effect. A tensorial formulation of the macroscopic aspects of the PR Kerr effect and its microscopic interpretation is presented. The second-order dipole orientation term containing the anisotropy of the first-order optical polarizability α(−ω;ω) is shown to yield the dominant contribution to the Kerr susceptibility χ(3)(−ω;ω,0,0). A class of special chromophores having negligible second-order polarizabilities β(−ω;ω,0) and large dipole moments μ has been identified in order to optimize this term. These chromophores are not subject to the efficiency-transparency tradeoff typically encountered with second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores, providing highly transparent materials with large PR Kerr response. Contrary to previous approaches in this field, the best-performing PR polymers are then expected to employ chromophores that would be useless for second- order applications (negligible β). We report PR of the material 30% 2,6-di-n-propyl-4H-pyran-4-ylidenemalononitrile (DPDCP): 15% N,N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)- N,N′-bis(phenyl)benzidine (TPD):55% poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA):0.3% C60 as an illustration of this principle. A 100 μm thick film of this material exhibits a steady-state diffraction efficiency of η=25% and net two-beam coupling of Γ=50 cm−1 at a bias field of 100 V/μm and a wavelength of 676 nm. The macroscopic Kerr susceptibility of the material is related to molecular electronic properties of the chromophore DPDCP which were independently determined by experiments in solution and by quantum chemical calculations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper reports the results of a field test of the hazard warning system used in rock climbing. The system is succinct; it differentiates between magnitudes of hazard; and it establishes a “warnings vocabulary.” The empirical hazard response models include an “individuating factor,” which influences the likelihood of injury, and the severity of injury as independent variables. The models indicate that climbers do assess a “personal” probability of injury and incorporate the hazard warning message when choosing climbing routes. Climbers of greater technical ability are more likely to climb hazardous routes, but they mitigate the likelihood of the hazardous outcome by reducing the technical difficulty of the hazardous route chosen. The response increases with the degree of hazard involved.

    Notes: The simulation-optimization approach is used to identify ground-water pumping strategies for control of the shallow water table in the western San Joaquin Valley, California, where shallow ground water threatens continued agricultural productivity. The approach combines the use of ground-water flow simulation with optimization techniques to build on and refine pumping strategies identified in previous research that used flow simulation alone. Use of the combined simulation-optimization model resulted in a 20 percent reduction in the area subject to a shallow water table over that identified by use of the simulation model alone. The simulation-optimization model identifies increasingly more effective pumping strategies for control of the water table as the complexity of the problem increases; that is, as the number of subareas in which pumping is to be managed increases, the simulation-optimization model is better able to discriminate areally among subareas to determine optimal pumping locations.The simulation-optimization approach provides an improved understanding of controls on the ground-water flow system and management alternatives that can be implemented in the valley. In particular, results of the simulation-optimization model indicate that optimal pumping strategies are constrained by the existing distribution of wells between the semiconfined and confined zones of the aquifer, by the distribution of sediment types (and associated hydraulic conductivities) in the western valley, and by the historical distribution of pumping throughout the western valley.

    Notes: Rates of biodegradation were measured in a petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated aquifer using a combination of field and laboratory methods. These methods are based on tracking concentration changes of substrates (both electron donors and acceptors) or final products of microbial metabolism over time. Ground water at the study site (Hanahan, South Carolina) is anoxic, and sulfate reduction is the predominant terminal electron accepting process. Laboratory studies conducted with sediment cored from the site showed that 14C-toluene was mineralized to 14CO2 with a first-order degradation rate constant (ktol) of -0.01 d−1 under sulfate-reducing conditions. Under nitrate-amended, Fe(III)-amended, or nonamended (methanogenic) conditions, toluene was not significantly mineralized. 14C-Benzene was degraded at low but measurable rates (kben= -0.003 d−1) under sulfate-reducing conditions whereas degradation under methanogenic conditions was negligible. These results illustrate the extreme sensitivity of laboratory-measured biodegradation rates to terminal electron-accepting conditions, and show the necessity of carefully matching experimental conditions to in situ conditions. Concentration decreases of toluene along aquifer flowpaths, when the uncertainty of ground-water flow velocities was considered, indicated ktol values ranging from -0.0075 to -0.03 d−1. Concentration decreases of sulfate and concentration increases of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), when normalized for assumed stoichiometric oxidation of toluene coupled to sulfate reduction, yielded a kso4 range of -0.005 to -0.02 d−1, and a kDIC value range of +0.00075 to +0.003 d−1. Because both laboratory and field methods have numerous sources of uncertainty, a combination of these methods is the most appropriate procedure for evaluating biodegradation rate constants in contaminated ground-water systems.
