    Notes: Flash x radiography can provide important information about high-density, high-opacity plasmas. Experiments at KMS investigated the characteristics of point x-ray sources produced when coated fibers, wires, and mounted particles were irradiated with high intensity (I〉1016 W/cm2) green laser light. The target materials Bi, CsI, Au, and Ag were evaluated in the areas of (1) the spatial and temporal resolutions that can be achieved, (2) the effect of source size and laser pulse duration on x-ray signal strength, and (3) the practical considerations associated with using the technique to actually obtain radiographs of accelerated polyvinyl alcohol shells.

    Notes: Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) was studied in experiments with laser-irradiated Au disk targets. Typically the laser energy was 150 J in a 1.0 nsec pulse at a wavelength of 526 nm. Laser intensity at the target was ∼7×1014 W/cm2. The spectrum, angular distribution, onset time, duration, and intensity of the Raman light were measured. In addition the electron density distribution was determined by holographic interferometry and images of the Raman emission were obtained. These data show that the Raman light is primarily backscattered and that scattering occurs at electron plasma densities 0.01 nc ≤n≤0.15nc. SRS occurred at laser intensities which are below theoretical thresholds, given the plasma conditions. Otherwise, most of the data support the present understanding of Raman scattering.

    Notes: A cesium sputter, negative ion source was developed and built at Triumf. While designed for accelerator mass spectrometry, it can be applied in any field requiring intensive negative ion beams covering the whole range from hydrogen to uranium. The source features an internal cesium oven and simplified target insulation. A pneumatically actuated target changer contains a 28-sample wheel but allows manual placing of single samples as well. In initial runs the source produced over 1 μA of 40CaH−3 and .25 μA of 27Al− beams. The construction of the source and the operation of the sample changer are discussed in this article. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Transport of photoelectrons by the 〈110〉 propagating surface acoustic wave (SAW) on (100)-cut gallium arsenide was observed using the acoustic charge transport (ACT) principle reported by Hoskins, Morkocursive-theta, and Hunsinger [Appl. Phys. Lett. 41, 332 (1982)]. By directly modulating an AlGaAs light-emitting diode, pulses of near-infrared radiation (λp=730 nm) were applied to semitransparent (25 nm thick) chromium windows on the device surface. Four such windows separated by 250 μm were positioned along the otherwise opaque Schottky channel plate of the ACT device. Electron-hole pairs generated by incident radiation were separated by the electrostatic field in the depleted n-type channel region. Calculations suggested that the separation time would be small enough to reduce radiative recombination and allow enough electrons to collect in each acoustically defined well passing beneath the injection window for detection at the output. Electrons, separated from the holes, were subsequently bunched and carried along by the electric field coupled to the SAW. Output pulse delays for injection over each window were in agreement with theory taking into account the window positions and the SAW velocity (2864 m/s). Quantum efficiency, defined as the number of electrons collected at the output per incident photon on the chromium window, was approximately 0.09. Operated at 360 MHz, the experimental device had a charge transfer efficiency in excess of 0.992. It is believed that the injection technique described may be of use in future optical signal processing or imaging applications using ACT.

    Notes: Abstract We studied the region of giant resonances with positive pions of 226 MeV scattered inelastically on90Zr. Two groups of resonances were seen: the first structure between 12 and 19 MeV excitation energy is explained as a sum of the isoscalar quadrupole resonance at 14 MeV, the isovector dipole resonance at 16.5 MeV and possibly some E0 strength. The second group between 24 and 34 MeV excitation energy also corresponds to more than a simple multipolarity and may be described as a sum of a monopole and a quadrupole isovector resonance.

    Notes: In order to study the influence of residual stresses on dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties of denture bases, an experimental model was devised for measurement of residual stresses in acrylic denture base polymers. Rectangular bar coupons were cut from resin plates heat processed by conventional dental methods. They included samples which had been slow and fast cooled after polymerization and had been stored in dry and wet environments. Uniaxial residual stress distributions for each coupon were disclosed by removing layers of known thicknesses and measuring the ensuing deflection of the specimens. Coupons of a commercial acrylic resin were annealed and used as controls. ANOVA and Scheffe's test were used to compare experimental conditions at the 95% confidence level. Dry specimens exhibited residual surface compressive stresses from 0.43-0.83 MPa (62-120 psi). Water-stored specimens showed higher stress levels, 2.86-3.24 MPa (414-470 psi). Slow cooled pigmented acrylic coupons which were dry showed higher residual stresses compared with other dry but nonpigmented specimens. No significant differences were found between pigmented or clear coupons which contained moisture.
