    Notes: Abstract The effects of photoperiod and melatonin treatment on reproductive and immune function were assessed in two subspecies of Peromyscus maniculatus from different latitudes of origin. In experiment 1, P. m. bairidii (latitude = 42°51′ N) and P. m. luteus (latitude = 30°37′ N) were housed in either long (LD 16∶8) or short days (LD 8∶16) for 8 weeks. Short-day P. m. bairdii displayed reproductive regression and elevated splenocyte proliferation in response to the T-cell mitogen concanavalin A, as compared to long-day mice. In contrast, P. m. luteus did not undergo reproductive regression or exhibit any increase in lymphocyte proliferation in short days. In experiment 2, individuals of both P. m. bairdii and P. m. luteus were implanted with empty capsules or capsules that contained melatonin. Individual P. m. bairdii implanted with melatonin underwent reproductive regression. Individuals of this subspecies also displayed elevated lymphocyte proliferation compared to control mice. Conversely, P. m. luteus implanted with melatonin did not undergo reproductive regression and displayed no significant changes in lymphocyte proliferation. These results suggest that reproductive responsiveness to melatonin mediates short-day enhancement of immune function in deer mice. These data also imply that melatonin may not possess universal immunoenhancing properties. Rather, the effectiveness of melatonin to influence immune responses may be constrained by reproductive responsiveness to this indole-amine.

    Notes: Summary To determine if parental hypertension is associated with proteinuria in offspring with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), 438 diabetic Pima Indians (172 men, 266 women) aged 20 years or more and both of their parents were examined. Hypertension was defined as a systolic blood pressure 140 mm Hg or more, diastolic blood pressure 90 mm Hg or more, or treatment with antihypertensive medicine. Sixty-three percent of the fathers and 80 % of the mothers had diabetes at the time their blood pressure was measured. Families in which either parent had proteinuria, defined as a urine protein-to-creatinine ratio ≥ 0.5 g/g were excluded; 73 (16.7 %) of the offspring had proteinuria. The prevalence rates of proteinuria in the offspring were similar if neither parent or only one parent had hypertension (8.9 and 9.4 %, respectively), but was significantly higher if both parents had hypertension (18.8 %), after adjustment for age, sex, duration of diabetes, and 2-h post-load plasma glucose concentration in the offspring and diabetes in the parents by logistic regression. The odds for proteinuria being present in the offspring if both parents had hypertension was 2.2 times (95 % confidence interval, 1.2 to 4.2) that if only one parent had hypertension. When mean arterial pressure and blood pressure treatment in the offspring were added to the model the relationship remained (odds ratio = 2.2; 95 % confidence interval, 1.1 to 4.3). Hypertension in both parents is associated with the development of proteinuria in offspring with NIDDM. This relationship was present even when controlled for the effects of blood pressure and its treatment in the offspring. [Diabetologia (1996) 39: 433–438]

    Notes: Abstract To increase the available set of near-isogenic lines (NILs) for blast-resistance in rice, we have developed a general method for establishing NILs from populations of fixed recombinants that have been used for gene mapping. We demonstrated the application of this method by the selection of lines carrying genes from the rice cultivar Moroberekan. Moroberekan is a West African japonica cultivar that is considered to have durable resistance to rice blast. Multiple genes from Moroberekan conferring complete and partial resistance to blast have previously been mapped using a recombinant inbred (RI) population derived from a cross between Moroberekan and the highly and broadly susceptible indica cultivar CO39. To analyze individual blast-resistance genes, it is desirable to transfer them individually into a susceptible genetic background. This RI population, and the associated data sets on blast reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) genotypes, were used for selection of lines likely to carry individual blast-resistance genes and a minimum number of chromosomal segments from Moroberekan. Because skewed segregation in the RI population favored CO39 (indica) alleles, resistant lines carrying 8.7–17.5% of Moroberekan alleles (the proportion expected after two or three backcrosses) could be selected. We chose three RI lines carrying different complete resistance genes to blast and two RI lines carrying partial resistance genes to blast as potential parents for the development of NILs. These lines were subjected to genetic analysis, which allowed clarification of some issues that could not be resolved during the initial gene-mapping study.

    Notes: Abstract Soil erosion in the Philippine uplands is severe. Hedgerow intercropping is widely advocated as an effective means of controlling soil erosion from annual cropping systems in the uplands. However, few farmers adopt hedgerow intercropping even in areas where it has been vigorously promoted. This may be because farmers find hedgerow intercropping to be uneconomic compared to traditional methods of farming. This paper reports a cost-benefit analysis comparing the economic returns from traditional maize farming with those from hedgerow intercropping in an upland community with no past adoption of hedgerows. A simple erosion/productivity model, Soil Changes Under Agroforestry (SCUAF), is used to predict maize yields over 25 years. Economic data were collected through key informant surveys with experienced maize farmers in an upland community. Traditional methods of open-field farming of maize are economically attractive to farmers in the Philippine uplands. In the short term, establishment costs are a major disincentive to the adoption of hedgerow intercropping. In the long term, higher economic returns from hedgerow intercropping compared to open-field farming are realised, but these lie beyond farmers′ limited planning horizons.
