Notes: Abstract Given a bounded linear operatorA in an infinite dimensional Banach space and a compact subset Λ of a connected component of its semi-Fredholm domain, we construct a finite rank operatorF such that λ−A+F is bounded below (or surjective) for each λ ∈ Λ,F 2=0 and rankF=maxλ∈Λ min{dimN(λ−A), codimR(λ−A)}, if ind(λ−A)≤0 (or ind(λ−A)≥0, respectively) for each λ∈Λ.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Critical hypoxemia due to extrapulmonary right-to-left-shunting is a typical feature of neonates with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). To improve oxygenation, inhaled nitric oxide (NO) has been used for the last three years in neonatal intensive care units during mechanical ventilation, thus lowering pulmonary vascular resistance. However, sustained improvement in oxygenation is only noted in one third up to two fifths of treated newborns (responders) if PPHN develops due to primary pulmonary disease. NO has only been used for term neonates until recently, when a growing interest for its administration in preterm babies with hyaline membrane disease (HMD) came up. Since intrapulmonary right-to-left shunting is the main reason for hypoxia in HMD, inhaled NO should prove to be a potent selective pulmonary vasodilator in future studies. Further clinical and experimental studies with animals will be helpful to evaluate the individual newborn as being a potential responder or nonresponder.

Notes: Abstract An international multicenter study (Germany Sweden, and Switzerland) was performed to investigate the feasibility and diagnostic of standard video-conferencing (VC) technology for remote expert consultation in radiology. Three high spatial resolution films (hand-bone, mammography, chest) and two low-spatial-resolution image sets (liver CT and MR1) were studied (total 446 images taken from different examinations). The images were recordedby a video camera transmitted via public broadband networks, and displayed on a video monitor. The resolution of the recorded images varied from 24 lp mm to 4.8 lp/mm at maximum zoom. Alter 3–4 months, the images were reexamined using conventional light-box reading. Diagnostic reliability was evaluated by receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis. With video conferencing, there was a noticeable loss of diagnostic accuracy for the high-spatial-resolution films, whereas for liver CT and liver MRIimages VC reading seemed to be satisfactory (average area value difference 〈 0.02)

Notes: Summary The assembly of the polyhedron envelope in baculovirus-infected cells has been the subject of several studies, yet it is still poorly understood. We have used immunogold-labelled antibodies to two baculovirus proteins, p10 and calyx (also referred to as polyhedron envelope protein or PEP), to follow envelope assembly in AcMNPV-infected tissues ofSpodoptera frugiperda larvae. We show that, in wild type virus, both proteins colocalize in fibrillar structures and associated electron-dense spacers which progress to encircle the polyhedra, as well as in completed polyhedron envelopes. In cells infected with polyhedrin-negative (PH−) viruses, an unusual proliferation of these spacers was observed suggesting a deregulatory event in the envelope assembly process. Results of Northern and Western blot analysis revealed that synthesis of P10 and calyx mRNA and proteins in PH− AcMNPV is unaffected as compared to wild type virus. Taken together, the observed physical and compositional connection between fibrillar structures, spacers and polyhedron envelopes, as well as the abnormal appearance of the spacers in PH− mutants, provide further evidence in support of a cooperative role of these structures in the assembly of the polyhedron envelope.

Notes: Abstract Using neutron diffraction (ND), muon-spin rotation/relaxation (μSR), and57Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) we have investigated magnetic properties of the normal spinel (Zn)[Fe2]O4. In compounds which are slowly cooled from 1200°C to room temperature inversion is below detection limits. AtT N = 10.5 K the spinel exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order (LRO). The transition as seen in thermal-scan spectra by MS is very sharp. However, ND andμSR experiments show that already at temperatures of ∼ 10T N a short-range antiferromagnetic ordering (SRO) develops which extends through ∼70% of the sample volume just aboveT N . BelowT N SRO and LRO coexist. At 4.2 K still ∼25% of the sample is short-range ordered. The regions over which the SRO extends have a size of ∼ 3 nm. Their fluctuation rates are in the GHz range. Modern ab initio cluster calculations successfully describe the magnetic hyperfine fields as well as the electric field gradient (EFG) tensor at the Fe sites. Covalency of the Fe-O and Zn-O bonds is important. The physical origin of the regions exhibiting SRO, however, remains unresolved at this point.

Notes: Abstract Using the method of multipath-saturation fluorescence, which considers both fluorescent as well as nonfluorescent substances, the total absorption coefficient can be determined with high sensitivity. This new fluorescence method is appropriate, e.g. for in-situ applications. Thus a portable absorption-fluorometer has been constructed. The main part of the device is a multireflection cell based on a design of Herriott with a 1 cm quartz-cuvette. Two pairs of spherical dielectric mirrors are used to realize the multireflection of the excitation radiation in the UV and blue spectral range. The combination of a cylindrical and a convace mirror leads to a long pathway of the excitation radiation and, thus, to a full absorption by the fluid. A first experiment has been performed with drinking water samples defined polluted by non-fluorescent p-nitrophenol and 2-nitroaniline. Based on the method of multipath-saturation fluorescence a good correlation to the substance concentration was achieved, whereas the conventional absorption failed.
