    Notes: Abstract We present a case of spontaneous spinal epidural haematoma (SSEH) with a rare clinical course of repeated spontaneous recovery and relapse. The patient suffered three episodes of upper-back pain of sudden onset followed by sensory and motor dysfunction after weight lifting. In the first two episodes, the neurological deficits recovered spontaneously and completely. In the last episode, paraplegia persisted even after emergency surgery. Serial studies with computed tomographic (CT) myelography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated the remitting and relapsing course of the SSEHs. The possible causes of the SSEHs and the mechanisms of spontaneous recovery are discussed.

    Notes: Charge-ordered stripes in La1−xCaxMnO3 with x〉0.5 were studied by electron diffraction and electron microscopy. Charge-ordered domains were observed in dark-field images and the stripes within the domain were revealed by high resolution lattice images. The modulation wave vector δ of the charge ordering follows closely the relationship of δ=1−x and shows a slight variation from area to area. The incommensurability of the charge ordering to the underlying fundamental lattice gives rise to the presence of discommensurations in the incommensurate phase. Configurations of discommensurations in this system do not follow the general rules observed in other incommensurate systems. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this analysis, the generalized kinematic equation for the thickness of the molten film is derived by perturbation methods and the method of multiple scales is used to investigate the weakly nonlinear stability of the flow of molten material in laser cutting under a transverse uniform magnetic field, taking into account the effect of phase change at the liquid–vapor interface. Analysis of the linear stability of the molten layer shows that the optimum cutting speed can be increased through use of the magnetic field. Nonlinear stability analysis further shows that supercritical stability and subcritical instability exist in the laser cutting system with or without magnetic effect. In a magnetic field, the equilibrium amplitude of high cutting speeds decreases, and the minimum threshold amplitude increases at low cutting speeds. The effect of the magnetic field, measured by the Hartmann number (m) is to stabilize the flow regardless of the cutting speed value or gas velocity. An appropriate applied magnetic field improves the laser cutting process and counteracts surface roughness. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Laser irradiation of absorbing materials can be used to generate acoustic pulses with extremely high amplitude and short pulse duration. Such acoustic pulses can transfer energy and momentum to atomic particles on solid surfaces to cause desorption of the particles. We report experimental observations of the effect of laser-induced acoustic desorption (LIAD) of electrons from metal film surfaces and hydrogen ions from the surface of palladium saturated with hydrogen. We believe LIAD can be used as a gentle technique to transfer analyte molecules and ions into gas phase for mass analysis and for other applications. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Corrugated quantum well infrared photodetectors (C-QWIPs) utilize total internal reflection to couple normal incident light into the detectors. In this work, we performed a systematic study on C-QWIPs with cutoff wavelength λc ranging from 5 to 17.3 μm and device areas ranging from 50×50 μm2 to 500×500 μm2. We found that the coupling efficiency of the C-QWIPs is, indeed, independent of both the detection wavelength and the pixel size, as expected. Compared to devices with a standard 45° edge coupling, the C-QWIP increases the background photocurrent to a dark current ratio by a factor between 2.4 and 4.4, thereby increasing the background limited temperature by 3–5 K. At the same time, the detectivity D* is also increased by a factor around 2.4. For λc=9.4 μm, the peak detectivity Dp* and the blackbody detectivity Dbb* at 78 K are measured to be 4.5×1010 cm Hz/W and 4.5×109 cmHz/W, respectively. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Te donor concentration has been used as a probe to infer the surface carrier concentration during growth by organometallic vapor phase epitaxy. With the partial pressure of Te held constant during the growth of an npn structure, the Te concentration is found to remain nearly unchanged across the p-n junctions. This result is used to show that the carrier concentration at the growing surface shifts by a negligible amount as the growth is switched between n- and p-type GaAs. When combined with previous results for p-type GaAs, we conclude that the Fermi energy at the (100)-oriented surface remains pinned between 100 and 200 meV below the intrinsic Fermi energy, independent of the type or the concentration of dopant used. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have developed an aluminum single-electron transistor device which was modified to incorporate an additional floating node in between the gate and the electrometer. At high gate voltages, Fowler–Nordheim type emission occurred between the gate and the floating node where the charges were stored. The emission events were evidenced by the oscillatory electrometer current which allowed estimation of the number of storage electrons. We demonstrated experimentally the nonvolatile memory function of this device and the results were justified by numeric simulations. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Highly conductive metallic oxide thin films of SrRuO3 with single crystalline quality have been grown on (001) SrTiO3 by using pulsed laser deposition. The films have a [00l] orientation with an in-plane relationship of [110]SrRuO3 // [100]SrTiO3. They have excellent metallic behavior with room temperature resistivity of ∼310 μΩ cm and a residual resistance ratio of about 7 at 4.2 K, the largest reported to date. A clear ferromagnetic transition at ∼147 K was detected by resistivity and magnetic measurements. However, the transition becomes blurred as the density-of-point defects increases in the films following a 400 keV proton irradiation with an accumulative dose up to ∼6.0×1016 ions/cm2. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
