Notes: The temporal and spatial evolution of paired luminous rings is observed in pulsed capacitive radio-frequency (rf) hydrogen discharges. The time-resolved axial profile of the light intensity indicates that the outermost ring pairs near the electrodes start to appear earlier than the inner ones, and that only the left-side (right-side) rings of ring pairs turn on when the rf voltage applied to the left-side (right-side) electrode is positive. The physical mechanism to create the paired rings seems to be similar to that of the standing striations in dc glow discharges. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A magnetohydrodynamic relaxation process of spheromak merging is studied by means of an axisymmetric numerical simulation. As a result of counter-helicity merging, a field-reversed configuration is obtained in the final state, while a larger spheromak is formed after co-helicity merging. In the counter-helicity case, a clear pressure profile of which iso-surfaces coincide with flux surfaces is generated by thermal transport of a poloidal flow induced by driven reconnection. It is also found that a sharp pressure gradient formed in the vicinity of a reconnection point causes a bouncing motion of spheromaks. According to the bounce motion, the reconnection rate changes repeatedly. As shown by the Tokyo University Spherical Torus No. 3 (TS-3) experiments [M. Yamada, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 721 (1990)], furthermore, strong acceleration of a toroidal flow and reversal of a toroidal field in the counter-helicity merging were observed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The structural evolution in rhombohedral-type boron nitride (r-BN) pressed up to 7.7 GPa at room temperature is examined before and after pressing using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. In the starting state, r-BN is in a platelike form with some folding. The plates consist of an almost perfect 3R structure. After pressing, a large number of stacking faults is formed and causes mixing of 3R and 2H in a few areas and a highly irregular stacking structure in most areas. This means that the coherent slip due to shearing between sp2 sheets is the dominant deformation mechanism in r-BN under high pressure at room temperature. All of these structures cause a broadening of the x-ray diffraction peaks. In some plates, the 2H structure is found in a relatively large area. It has a hexagonal lattice with the stacking sequence of ...ABAB... and lattice constants of a=0.25 nm and c=0.67 nm. The structural evolution in r-BN revealed after pressing is in contrast to that in hexagonal-type BN, in which twinning is the dominant deformation mechanism that introduces the folding of plates under high pressure at high temperature. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An in situ x-ray diffraction study of room-temperature compression of rhombohedral boron nitride (rBN) was performed up to 10 GPa. Although no phase transformation of rBN was observed in a liquid pressure transmitting medium, the structure of rBN changed to become disordered within the layered stacking sequence at less than 1 GPa with the solid-state pressure transmitting medium. Further transformation to the wurtzite structure (wBN) was observed at 6 GPa and was unquenchable upon the release of pressure at room temperature. The orientation relationship of the phase transformation of rBN to wBN was compared with that of hexagonal BN to wBN. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Submonolayer gold colloidal particles were deposited by using aminosilane [3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyltrimethoxysilane] as an adhesion agent on the substrate. It was observed that these submonolayer particles transform themselves into short chains of a few gold colloidal particles after a subsequent dithiol (1,6-hexanedithiol) treatment and an additional gold colloidal particle deposition. These chains bridged a gap that was formed between source and drain metal electrodes defined by electron beam lithography; thus realizing a quasi one dimensional current path between the source and drain. The device exhibited a clear Coulomb staircase at both 4.2 and 77 K. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract— The effects of bluing, associated with drawing strain, on the fatigue strength of eutectoid steel wires have been investigated. The fatigue limit increases by bluing and the increase is more significant with higher drawing strain. The peak in the fatigue limit with regard to the drawing strain in the wires, at a strain of 2.5, disappears after bluing. On the other hand, in the ferritic steel wires investigated for comparison, the fatigue limit gradually increases with the drawing strain up to 7.7. Furthermore, no appreciable change in the fatigue limit due to bluing is found. Based on the results of hardness tests on fatigue specimens with- and without-bluing, it is deduced that the decrease of the fatigue limit beyond the peak drawing strain in the eutectoid steel wire can partly be attributed to insufficient locking of the high-density dislocations by solute atoms. The effect of relaxation of residual stress during bluing is also briefly discussed.

Notes: summary The relationship between the size of the denture foundation area and the resorption of the alveolar ridge was investigated in 55 edentulous subjects. The denture foundation area was recorded using a modelling compound impression technique with border moulding. Both sides of each edentulous mandible were examined separately, making a total of 110 experimental sides in the study. On a stone cast made from each impression, the size of the superficial denture foundation area and of the projected denture foundation area on the tentative plane of occlusion of each anatomical zone were measured. The vertical height of the alveolar ridge at the lateral incisor and first molar region was also evaluated. The size of the superficial denture foundation area in the antero-lingual and postero-lingual zones showed no significant correlation with the degree of alveolar ridge resorption. The size of the projected denture foundation area on the tentative plane of occlusion in the anterior section showed negative significant correlation with the degree of alveolar ridge resorption. The size of the projected denture foundation area on the tentative plane of occlusion in the posterior section showed no significant correlation with the degree of alveolar ridge resorption.

Notes: summary The effect of balancing-side occlusal contact patterns on ipsilateral TMJ dynamics was evaluated in this study. Vertical displacement of the balancing-side lower second molar during clenching at canine edge-to-edge position, with 0 and 1 mm of inter-canine distance, was measured for 42 normal subjects in relation to their balancing-side occlusal contact. Balancing-side occlusal contact was classified into four following patterns; (1) simultaneous balancing-side and working-side contact (without clenching); (2) balancing-side contact (with clenching only); (3) no balancing-side contact (with or without clenching); and (4) exclusive balancing-side contact (no working-side contact). The vertical displacement of the balancing-side condyle, calculated from the displacement of the balancing-side second molar, showed three different types of displacement pattern. These three types showed distinctive incidence in relation to the pattern of balancing-side occlusal contact. It was revealed that balancing-side occlusal contact can affect the ipsilateral TMJ dynamics.

Notes: summary The histopathological changes in denture-supporting tissues were studied in relation to continuous pressure exerted through an experimental denture base. The experimental dentures were designed to load continuous pressures (1.5, 3.4 or 4.9 kPa) to the palate of molar region of rat. Histopathological changes caused by the continuous pressure were observed, and the intensity of the pressure was also estimated. A high correlation was observed between the histopathological changes under the denture base and the intensity of the continuous pressure. In groups exposed to 4.9 and 34 kPa, the continuous mechanical pressure caused bone resorption; in 1.5 kPa group, no evidence of bone resorption was observed. The epithelium and lamina propria mucosa under the denture base, which were compressed by the continuous pressure, recovered histopathologically depending on the decrease of the pressure caused by bone resorption; no quantitative recovery of the absorbed bone tissue was observed. No inflammatory change was induced by the continuous pressure. From the histopathological results observed in this study, the possibility of the existence of a threshold for bone resorption induced by continuous pressure was suggested.

Notes: Abstract During dissection practice, an enlarged communicating vein between the portal and left renal vv. was found. This paraportal route seemed to be formed by the union of the left gastric v. and the cardioesophageal branch of the left inferior phrenic v. which opened into the left renal v.
