Notes: An apparatus, based on sputter-initiated resonant ionization spectroscopy and combined with time-of-flight mass spectroscopy, has been recently developed for microanalysis of mineral samples and other solid materials. This equipment has two kinds of ion gun, which make it possible to do more convenient and accurate microanalysis of complicated mineral samples. With this apparatus, detection and size measurement of fine gold grains trapped in pyrite at low concentrations have been carried out. The detection limit of this apparatus for gold is 73 ppb. The apparatus also has the function of secondary electron imaging. This gives very helpful information for geologists to evaluate the inborn state of gold in mineral samples and to improve the extraction rate of gold from minerals. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Conversion gain bandwidth and noise characteristics are reported for lattice-cooled superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 hot-electron bolometers acting as low-power, wide-bandwidth heterodyne mixers at 75 and 585 GHz. Near 77 K, these mixers show intrinsic conversion gain as high as −16 dB using ∼1 μW of local oscillator power. The measured gain bandwidth is well described by a single Lorentzian with −3 dB frequency of 5–9 GHz. Measurements of output noise combined with conversion gain indicate an optimal input noise temperature of ∼5000 K, significantly lower than calculations predict. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A nonmechanical method for fabricating a metallic narrow constriction between two electrodes using electrochemical deposition is described. The width of the constriction can be adjusted by slowly dissolving metal atoms away or redepositing atoms onto the constriction which can be controlled flexibly by the electrodes' potentials. Well-defined plateaus near the integer numbers of the conductance quantum have been observed in these constrictions at room temperature. Since no mechanical movements are involved, this method has the potential of fabricating nanoconstrictions with long term stability. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Rapidly solidified samples of Nd9.5Fe84.5B6 with and without 3 at. % TiC were prepared by melt spinning and melt extraction and then annealed in vacuum (3×10−6 Torr) at temperatures from 600 to 750 °C. For alloys melt spun under similar conditions, the overquenched state was achieved at wheel speeds 〉10 m/s for the TiC added alloy while 〉20 m/s was necessary without TiC. The overquenched samples contained a smaller fraction of α-Fe in smaller grains than the undercooled samples where Fe dendrites formed near the free surface during solidification. These Fe dendrites were not removed by annealing. In addition, large orientated 2-14-1 grains nucleated on the Fe dendrites. This combination is detrimental to the magnetic properties. The addition of TiC results in improved control of the microstructure over a larger fraction of the ribbon volume enhancing the magnetic properties. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract To date much attention has been focused on regulation of apoptosis in proliferating cells. However, recent evidence shows that regulation of apoptosis in quiescent tissue plays an important role in homeostasis of the organism. This review examines the implications of apoptosis of quiescent cells for both tumourigenesis and viral infection such as HIV. In this article we propose a dual role for cellular activation in the homeostasis regulation. In this model cellular mitogens not only activate quiescent cells into the active cell cycle, but under certain conditions, loss of quiescence may result in apoptosis. The loss of quiescence-associated apoptosis may play a significant role in tumourigenesis and viral infections.

Notes: Abstract Our literature studies show that the thermal regime along continental strike-slip rifts is inconspicuous and that they are "low-volcanicity rifts" at best. Along with that, young continental strike-slip rifts exhibit no signs of major thermally controlled doming. We suggest that the larger the strike-slip component of a rift is, the less likely major thermal doming is causally associated with the rift zone. Since vertical lithosphere movements are reflected in the stratigraphic record of a rifted area, different rift modes (strike-slip, dip-slip) may be distinguished by analyzing the relevant sequences. Two ancient and especially suitable strike-slip rift margins in Tethyan mountain belts, the Bangong/Nujiang zone of Tibet and the South Penninic zone of the Alps, were analyzed with regard to their uplift history. The results confirm recent regional rift models which indicate in both cases that rifting was dominated by strike-slip. The stratigraphic approach may provide significant clues as to the mode of paleorifting when structural data are unavailable.

Notes: Abstract Rapid prototyping has gained wide industrial acceptance in recent years. Its main advantage is that it improves the “time to market” and the design quality of a product. Most rapid prototyping processes have to build the solid volume layer by layer. The tracing of the cross-sectional area in each layer is the most time-consuming step. The process can be speeded up if the material volume to be traced can be reduced by extracting some empty volumes in the original solid. However, the hollow solid generated by employing the negative solid offset technique is subject to the problem of no interior support. In this paper, a sub-boundary octree approach of generating thin shell solids with reinforced interior structuring is proposed. The procedures to generate a reinforced thin shell solid are studied. Various testing models are produced by a fused deposition modelling rapid prototyper and the results are supportive.
