    Notes: Abstract Since the molecular identification of the first aquaporin in 1992, the number of proteins known to belong to this family has been rapidly increasing. These members may be separated into two subgroups based on gene structure, sequence homology, and function. Regulation of the water permeability of the collecting ducts of the kidney is essential for urinary concentration. Aquaporin-2 and -3, which are representative of these subgroups, are colocalized in the collecting ducts. Understanding these subgroups will elucidate the differences between aquaporin-2 and -3. Aquaporin-2 is a vasopressin-regulated water channel located in the apical membrane, and aquaporin-3 is a constitutive water channel located in the basolateral membrane. In contrast to aquaporin-3, which appears to be less well regulated, many studies have now identified multiple regulational mechanisms at the gene, protein, and cell levels for aquaporin-2, thus reflecting its physiological importance. Evidence of the participation of aquaporin-2 in the pathophysiology of water-balance disorders is accumulating.

    Notes: Abstract Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) are characterized by their unique clinical features and neuronal pathology. Although astrocytic plaques and tufts of abnormal fibers have been suggested to be specific histopathologic markers, recent studies have revealed significant clinicopathologic overlap between CBD and PSP. Based on the distinctive camera lucida profile of astrocytic inclusions on Gallyas-Braak silver staining, we found that astrocytic plaques and tufts of abnormal fibers did not coexist in the same patient among 30 cases of clinically diagnosed CBD, PSP and atypical Parkinson’s disease. Using Tau immunohistochemistry it was difficult to verify the absence of tufts of abnormal fibers. A morphometric analysis revealed that the two groups classified by the presence or absence of astrocytic plaques and tufts of abnormal fibers exhibited significant differences in the density of ballooned neurons and neurofibrillary tangles and degeneration of the subcortical nuclei. Assessment using the NINDS neuropathologic criteria revealed that the cases with astrocytic plaques and tufts of abnormal fibers closely correspond to CBD and typical PSP, respectively. In addition, the cases lacking either of these two astrocytic inclusions had atypical PSP according to the NINDS criteria, and were associated with novel tau-positive astrocytes (spiny astrocytes). We thus conclude that astrocytic plaques and tufts of abnormal fibers are highly characteristic structures for CBD and typical PSP, respectively. We emphasize the importance of strict differentiation between different astrocytic inclusions not only for diagnosis, but also for further studies for elucidation of their role in the disease mechanisms of CBD and PSP.

    Notes: Abstract This report concerns a comparative immunocytochemical, ultrastructural and morphometric investigation on heterotopic neurons in the white matter of the spinal cords of 19 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and 18 age-matched neurologically normal individuals. The study revealed that the heterotopic neurons were scattered in the white matter, often adjacent to gray matter, that they immunoreacted with the antibody to synaptophysin, and that there were synaptic apparatuses on the surface of their somata and their neuronal processes. Bunina bodies and ubiquitin-positive inclusions such as Lewy body-like inclusions and skein-like inclusions, characteristic of anterior horn neurons of ALS, were present in the cytoplasm of the patients’ heterotopic neurons in the anterior or lateral column of the white matter. These findings suggest that heterotopic neurons in the anterior or lateral column have the characteristics of alpha motor neurons. The average number of heterotopic neurons observed in ALS patients was generally less than in normal subjects. This reduction was correlated with the severity of neuronal loss. The heterotopic neurons in ALS were less susceptible to the degenerative process as compared with spinal cord anterior horn cells. We assume that in this disease the heterotopic neurons may be degenerated and their number diminished after or concomitantly with the depletion of anterior horn neurons.

    Notes: Abstract The gene encoding Clara cell-derived inflammatory molecule CC16 has been cited as a candidate gene for atopic asthma on chromosome 11q13. A genetic association study was performed with variants of the CC16 gene on chromosome 11q13 in relation to asthma in British (n=275) and Japanese (n=300) populations. No significant association was found between asthma and CC16 genotypes, irrespective of atopic status in these two populations. These data suggest that CC16 might not be the major locus for asthma on 11q13.

    Notes: Abstract. The imaging features of primary ovarian leiomyoma have seldom been described because of the very low prevalence of the tumor. Herein we present a case report on its magnetic resonance imaging features. Both T1- and T2-weighted images revealed a low-signal-intensity mass, which was well circumscribed and sharply demarcated from the uterus. Magnetic resonance imaging was useful in distinguishing it from a malignant ovarian tumor and uterine leiomyoma.

    Notes: Abstract A transient heating technique, improving the constant-rate-heating technique for the measurements of thermal diffusivities of metals, is proposed. For a physical model of a specimen to be measured, the transient heat-conduction equation was solved with some boundary conditions, and the solution obtained was used as the principle of the present transient heating technique for determining the thermal diffusivity of the specimen. Additionally, a thermal analysis was made to satisfy a boundary condition involved in the principle, that is, the condition of radiative thermal insulation at the two end surfaces of the specimen. To verify the validity of the present technique, the thermal diffusivity of iron, whose thermophysical properties are well-known, was measured with the same apparatus as used in our previous work, and the experimental results are discussed. Moreover, thermal diffusivities of thermocouple materials, namely, constantan, chromel, and alumel, were measured by the technique in the temperature range of 360 to 680 K.

    Notes: Abstract The rates of NO decomposition over Cu/Y-zeolites with higher ion exchange level were shown to be proportional to the amounts of NO3-type adsorbed species, whereas Cu/Y-zeolites with ion exchange levels lower than 22% had no effect on NO decomposition, and the O/N values calculated for the NOx adsorbed species on these catalysts with low ion exchange were less than 2.5.
