Notes: Abstract Adsorption of nitrogen on Li or Ca exchanged Faujasite at various Si/Al mole ratios (1.00, 1.23, and 1.69) and exchange levels (0 to nearly 100%) has been measured at 298 K. Nitrogen capacities were compared with the positions of Li and Ca. It has been demonstrated that Li at site III and Ca at site II adsorb nitrogen, and nitrogen capacities depend on Li per unit cell in Li-Faujasite and Ca per unit cell in Ca-Faujasite regardless of Si/Al.

Notes: Abstract  We applied organotypic slice culture of neonatal mouse liver tissues to maintain the parenchymal cells in ontogenesis and to investigate their proliferation and differentiation. Cultured tissue spread gradually over 3 weeks. Small basophilic cells formed several layers in the center of the cultured tissues, and a monolayer of polygonal cells was seen at the periphery. Albumin- and α-fetoprotein-immunoreactions were seen in polygonal cells, as were proliferating cell nuclear antigen-immunoreactions. Connexin 32- and 26-immunoreactions were observed in small plaques on the membrane of the polygonal cells, and electron microscopy showed gap junctional complexes. Ultrastructurally, polygonal cells had a round nucleus and abundant cytoplasmic organelles, and bile canaliculi were seen on the cytoplasmic membrane. Cytokeratin 19-immunoreactions were scattered in clusters. There were ultrastructurally bile-duct-like structures with microvilli on the inner surface of the cavity and tight junctions between their constitutent cells. Quantitative analysis of albumin-, α-fetoprotein- and cytokeratin 19- or proliferating cell nuclear antigen-immunoreactivity in parenchymal cells showed changes of their phenotypes or maintenance of their proliferation in tissue culture. Our slice-culture system enabled us to maintain and to develop parenchymal cells in the liver tissue for at least 3 weeks. The findings suggest that organotypic slice culture applied to liver tissues in ontogenesis may be a useful tool not only to maintain parenchymal cells but also to investigate their proliferation and differentiation.

Notes: Summary.  The fusion (F), small hydrophobic (SH), and hemagglutinin-neuram- inidase (HN) regions of 15 mumps virus (MuV) strains were sequenced to demon- strate the genetic variability since 1976 in Japan. The MuV strains were classified into 2 major genotypes, A and B, and genotype A was subdivided into three subtypes (A1, A2, and A3). A1 and A2 strains were mainly isolated in 1977 and 1980. A3 strains were isolated in 1985 and 1989 and genotype B strains in 1993 and 1994. Genotypes A1, A2, and A3 were closely related indigenous lineages in Japan but genotype B was in the similar cluster in Europe and North America.

Notes: Abstract Overcoming apoptosis resistance to chemotherapy and radiation may lead to a reduction in gastric cancer death. We hypothesize that the apoptotic machinery in gastric cancer cells is dependent upon specific cellular conditions. In the course of our study of the expression of apoptosis-related genes in human gastric cancer cell lines, we have identified a cDNA clone which predicts an alternative form of caspase-9. The caspase-9 variant, which we designated as caspase-9 beta, retained a truncated structure of native caspase-9 without its catalytic domain and was expressed in seven cell lines from human gastric cancer. Among the cell lines examined, MKN-28 cells, which exhibited the most resistance against apoptotic stimuli, expressed the highest level of caspase-9 beta. The induction of apoptosis by staurosporine or actinomycin D was markedly suppressed in caspase-9 beta-transfected HeLa cells. These results are consistent with our hypothesis that the caspase-9 beta may be an endogenous dominant-negative molecule which attenuates apoptotic activity in human gastric cancer cells.

Notes: Abstract The pseudo-binary phase diagram between Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 Ba 2 Cu 3 O x and Ba 3 Cu 10 O 13 has been in-situ observed using high-temperature optical microscopy. It has been observed that the liquidus line is very narrow both in composition and temperature, which suggested that Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 Ba 2 Cu 3 O x crystals could only be grown from a peritectic melt consisting of (Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 ) 2 BaCuO 5 and a liquid. The crystal growth of Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 Ba 2 Cu 3 O x was performed in a tubular furnace under a horizontal temperature gradient using alumina crucibles. Well faceted Y 0.5 Nd 0.5 Ba 2 Cu 3 O x crystals up to a size of 7.3 x 5,8 x 1.28 mm 3 were grown.

Notes: Abstract The heat capacity of 9.70 and 11.35 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia ((ZrO2)1−x(Y2O3)x; x=0.0970, 0.1135) was measured by adiabatic calorimetry between 13 and 300 K, and some thermodynamic functions were calculated and given in a table. A large excess heat capacity extending from the lowest temperature to room temperature with a broad maximum at about 75 K was found in comparison with the heat capacity calculated from those of pure zirconia and yttria on the basis of simple additivity rule. The shape of the excess heat capacity is very similar to the Schottky anomaly, which may be attributed to a softening of lattice vibration. The amount of the excess heat capacity decreased with increasing yttria doping, while the maximum temperature did not vary. The relationships among the excess heat capacity, defect structure and interatomic force constants, and also the role of oxygen vacancy were discussed.

Notes: Abstract Y2O3 has a crystal structure of c-type rare-earth oxide. Y2O3 does not show an oxide ionic conductivity. On the other hand, CeO2 based oxide is one of the most interesting of the fluorite oxides since the ionic conductivity of it is higher than that of yttria-stabilized zirconia. However, CeO2 based oxides are partially reduced and develop electronic conductivity under reduced atmosphere. In this study, the effective index for the improvement of ionic conductivity in Y2O3 and CeO2 systems was defined using ionic radii from the viewpoint of crystallography. The utility of this effective index on some electrical properties was investigated.

Notes: Abstract Comparative genomic hybridization was used to identify chromosomal imbalances in eight cell lines and 12 blood samples from patients with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). The chromosomes most often over-represented in the cell lines were 2p (6 cases), 7q (4 cases), and 14q (4 cases), with minimal common regions at 2p16-22, 7q21-36, and 14q32, respectively. Distinct imbalances were detected in only 7 of the clinical samples. Chromosomes 14q32 and 2p16-22 harbor TCL1 and a transcription factor, HTLF (human T-cell leukemia virus enhancer factor), respectively. FISH analysis revealed that TCL1 did not juxtapose to TCRA, and we detected no expression of TCL1 in any of the ATL cell lines despite the 14q32 amplifications. Moreover, expression of HTLF was not elevated in the ATL cell lines bearing multiplication of 2p. These results suggest that chromosomal regions 2p16-22 and 14q32 harbor genes other than HTLF and TCL1 that are involved in cellular immortalization or in the pathogenesis of ATL.
