Notes: The nematic liquid-crystal director-orientation in the vicinity of the interface between a liquid-crystal layer and a glass substrate is evaluated in various orientations under an applied electric field, using shear horizontal (SH) wave propagation. The measured acoustic phase delay is related to numerical analysis of the propagation characteristics of the SH wave in a trilayer structure containing a nematic liquid-crystal layer (4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl: 5CB) between two glass plates. This technique using SH wave propagation in a liquid-crystal cell is promising for evaluating the nematic liquid-crystal director angle in the vicinity of the interface. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This letter describes the memory effect of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction field-effect transistor that contains InAs nanodots in the barrier layer. The device experiences a shift of threshold gate voltage, as a function of the amount of the electrons trapped in the nanodots. These trapped electrons can be injected by applying a positive gate voltage and be erased by a visible light illumination at negative gate bias. Although the shift of the threshold gate voltage volatilizes with the time after the memory programing operation, a considerable part of the shift is retained even after 100 h at room temperature. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 1. The effects of channelisation on macroinvertebrates were examined in relation to a spate and flow refugia. Habitat components that can function as flow refugia were identified in a small, low-gradient stream in northern Hokkaido, Japan.2. Macroinvertebrates and their habitat characteristics (depth, current velocity and substratum) were sampled and measured in natural and channelised sections on three occasions: before, during and immediately after a spate. For macroinvertebrate sampling and habitat measurements, five (riffle, glide, pool, backwater and inundated habitats) and three (channelised-mid, channelised-edge and inundated habitats) habitat types were classified in the natural and channelised section, respectively.3. The rate of velocity increase with discharge was compared among habitat types to determine which habitat types were less affected by increased discharge. The rate was the highest in riffles followed by glides and channelised-mids. Backwaters maintained low current velocity even at high flow. In addition, current velocity in both natural and channelised inundated habitats was low relative to other habitat types during the spate.4. Through the spate, total density of macroinvertebrates in channelised-mids and taxon richness in both channelised-mids and edges decreased. In the natural section, however, such a significant decrease was not found except for taxon richness in pools. This indicated that the spate had a greater impact on assemblages in the channelised section. Riffle assemblages exhibited a rapid recovery immediately after the spate, suggesting the existence of flow refugia in the natural section. Among the habitat types we examined, backwaters and inundated habitats appeared to have acted as flow refugia, because these habitats accumulated macroinvertebrates during the spate.5. The lower persistence of the macroinvertebrate assemblage in the channelised section was attributable to the lower availability of flow refugia such as backwaters and inundated habitats. Our results emphasised the importance of considering flow fluctuations and refugia in assessing the effects of channelisation. In addition, the lateral heterogeneity of stream channels should be considered in stream restoration and management.

Notes: Summary We report a case of febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha–Habermann disease (FUMHD) in a 21-year-old man. This disease is a severe form of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) and is characterized by the sudden onset of diffuse ulcerations associated with high fever and systemic symptoms. It is sometimes lethal especially in elderly patients. In the present case, intense generalized maculopapular erythematous plaques with central necrosis developed progressively in association with a high fever. Initial treatment with systemic betamethasone had been unsuccessful and the skin lesions, which covered about 50% of the body surface, became severely ulcerated. Although the development of new lesions had ceased spontaneously, widespread ulceration of the skin remained. Debridement of the necrotic skin and skin grafting using cultured epidermal autografts and meshed allografts of cadaver skin led to prompt reepithelization.

Notes: Abstract Background. A prospective randomized study involving gastric cancer patients was undertaken to evaluate combined adjuvant chemotherapy and the prognostic value of biologic markers. Methods. One hundred and eighty-five patients under 75 years of age who underwent a curable resection of pathologic stage II or III gastric cancer were randomly assigned to receive adjuvant chemotherapy containing either: mitomycin C (MMC) plus oral 5-fluorouracil (FU) (MF), epirubicin plus oral FU (EF), or oral FU (F). Tumor tissue collected at surgery was immunohistochemically analyzed for p53 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and DNA ploidy was determined. Results. All prognostic factors were equally distributed in each arm. There was no significant difference among the groups in the 5-year overall survival. When the relationship between the biologic markers and prognosis was analyzed, the overall survival of all patients and stage III patients was poorer in those with p53 positivity, but the difference did not achieve significance. For patients with positive nodes, irrespective of the treatment regimen, p53-positivity was significantly associated with poorer prognosis (P = 0.05). In stage III patients, the survival of those with p53-positivity and DNA aneuploidy was significantly worse than that for patients with any other combination (P = 0.02). Conclusion. No survival benefit was observed with the combined chemotherapeutic regimens compared with FU alone. p53 positivity was negatively correlated to survival for node-positive and stage III patients.

Notes: Abstract Aciculin is a novel adherens junction antigen extracted from human uterine smooth muscle that is reported to associate biochemically with dystrophin. We attempted to determine (i) the immunostainability of anti-aciculin antibody for the 6 histochemically normal human muscles and seven muscles from boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy(DMD) and 11 disease control muscles, (ii) the ultrastructural localization of aciculin in normal skeletal myofibers, (iii) aciculin’s spacial relationship with dystrophin and β-spectrin, and (iv) if the aciculin is ultrastructurally colocalized with dystrophin, the distance from the aciculin epitope to the epitope of the dystrophin N- or C-terminal domain. For this, rabbit anti-aciculin antibody was generated against the synthetic peptide of aciculin fragment D [4]. Immunohistochemical staining showed that the immunostainability of DMD muscles for anti-aciculin antibody was markedly decreased as compared with normal and disease control muscles. Single and double immunogold labeling electron microscopy of 6 histochemically normal human quadriceps femoris muscles revealed that aciculin was present along the inner surface of muscle plasma membrane and that aciculin formed doublets more frequently with dystrophin (23.5 ± 1.8%; group mean ± SE) than with β-spectrin (12.8 ± 1.1%; P 〈 0.01 two tailed t test). Rabbit anti-aciculin antibody frequently formed doublets with monoclonal antibodies against the N- or C-terminal domain of dystrophin at the muscle cell surface. These results suggest that aciculin is associated with dystrophin and may interact with both the N- and C-terminal domains of dystrophin.

Notes: Abstract  Using DAPI-stained prometaphase chromosomes, quantitative idiograms were constructed for the T subgenome of Nicotiana tabacum (2n = 4x = 48, SSTT) and two putative candidates for its T subgenome progenitor, Nicotiana otophora and Nicotiana tomentosiformis (both have 2n = 24, TT). The large chromosomes of the three karyotypes could be identified from the distributional pattern of the DAPI signal. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with 5S rDNA gave not only good cytogenetical landmarks for identification of small chromosomes of the karyotypes but also phylogenetical information. In all three idiograms, 5S rDNA was localized in the proximal region of the long arm of a small submetacentric pair, but an additional 5S rDNA locus was detected terminally on the short arm of a small metacentric pair in N. otophora. The 18S rDNA locus detected here corresponded to satellite regions in all three karyotypes. Two satellited pairs in N. otophora and one satellited pair in N. tomentosiformis had single large subterminal DAPI blocks and two interstitial DAPI bands on their long arms, respectively. For the T subgenome component of N. tabacum, the single intense DAPI band was depicted on the center of the long arm of a satellited pair in the idiogram, although two interstitial bands were often detected on the long arm of the satellited pair in some spreads. Therefore, it was suggested that the T component of N. tabacum was more similar to that of N. tomentosiformis than N. otophora, especially in respect of the number and location of rDNA and the distributional patterns of DAPI signals.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Hämatit aus Pyrophyllitlagerstätten des Shobara Distriktes, SW Japan Hämatit ist ein typisches Mineral in Liesegang-Gesteinen aus Pyrophyllitlagerstätten des Shobara Distriktes, südwestliches Japan.
Notes: Summary Hematite is a characteristic mineral of Liesegang rock in the pyrophyllite ore deposits, Shobara district, southwestern Japan. The mineral intimately coexists with fine-grained pyrophyllite and quartz. The hematite crystals are characteristically needle-shaped to fibrous, and several microns in length, and can only be observed by high-magnification reflected light microscopy with oil immersion lens. They occur as ring-shaped aggregates several tens of microns in diameter. Moreover, the crystals are often arranged radially within the rings. Microprobe analyses reveal that hematite crystals are almost pure iron oxide, with less than 0.9 wt.% Ti. X-ray powder diffraction patterns and reflection intensities indicate that hematite is the only iron mineral in the Liesegang rock, i.e., no hydrous iron oxides are present. This observation was also confirmed by examinations of water content and infrared spectroscopy.
