    Notes: The low-temperature cation-ordered superstructure of anhydrous sodium sodalite, a zeolite with composition Na6[AlSiO4]6, has been determined through the use of both density functional theory (DFT) and classical force-field lattice energy minimizations. The charge-balancing Na+ cations are assumed to occupy their characteristic locations within the cubic alumino–silicate framework near the centers of the 6-ring windows. Within the constraints of the volume-doubled pseudotetragonal supercell reported in a previous x-ray diffraction study [B. Campbell, S. R. Shannon, H. Metiu, and N. P. Blake (submitted)], all possible arrangements of cations and vacancies amongst the 6-ring window sites were considered. Force-field calculations employing the ab initio based potential energy function derived by Blake, Weakliem, and Metiu [J. Phys. Chem. B 102, 67 (1998)] and the empirical shell-model potential of Catlow et al. [J. Chem. Soc. Commun. 1984, 1271; Mol. Simul. 1, 207 (1988)], were used to perform full lattice-energy minimizations of each configuration, and to assess their relative stabilities both before and after minimization. The most stable configurations were then examined in more detail via ab initio density functional calculations in the generalized gradient approximation. The lowest-energy supercell ordering proved more stable than the lowest-energy parent cell ordering, and also yielded a pseudotetragonal distortion (space group Pnc2) and a calculated diffraction pattern that qualitatively match experimental results. The structural influences that contribute to the low energy of the correct vacancy ordering are described in detail. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Adaptation of persistent infection within the cells of the immune system is a unique characteristic of gamma herpes viruses. A classic example of this is Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which may have co-evolved with Homo sapiens over millions of years, thus achieving a balance between viral persistence and immune control. In this review, we present an overview of virus and the host immune system interactions that regulate the life-long host-virus relationship in healthy virus carriers and EBV-associated diseases. Extensive analysis of cytotoxic T lymphocyte-mediated immune responses in healthy virus carriers has revealed unique mechanisms used by EBV to maintain a benign persistent state in vivo. On the other hand, this relationship in EBV-associated diseases favors the escape of the virus from the hostile effects of the immune response. This escape is achieved by either down-regulating the expression of highly immunogenic antigens of the virus or by direct modulation of the host cytotoxic T lymphocyte response by virus-encoded proteins.

    Notes: Objective: This study examined factors associated with the use of specific dental services by persons with HIV disease. Methods: The data were derived from 1,588 adults who participated in a series of up to six interviews as part of the AIDS Cost and Service Utilization Surveys. Use of dental services such as examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fillings, extractions, root canals, crown and bridge or dentures, andperiodontal procedures were evaluated using logistic regression and generalized estimating equations were applied. Results: Multivariate analyses showed that medical insurance, an education beyond high school, income higher than $1,300 per month, high ambulatory visits, and receipt of psychological counseling were generally associated with higher service use. Blacks, those with an inpatient admission, and CD4+ cell counts less than 500 cells/μL were significantly less likely to use most types of dental services. Conclusions: The study concludes that disparities exist in the use of several dental services similar to those seen in the general population.

    Notes: Abstract This article proposes "equality" as a topic for interactionist research. By drawing on the perspectives of Herbert Blumer, Alfred Schutz, and Harold Garfinkel, an attempt is made to lay the theoretical groundwork for studying the interpretive and experiential aspects of equality. Blumer's fundamental premises of symbolic interactionism, Schutz's analysis of relevance and typification, and Garfinkel's treatment of reflexivity and indexicality are explicated and applied to the subject of equality. I then draw upon the moral theory of John Dewey to suggest the positive role that interactionist theory and research might play in the resolution of problematic situations that are framed in terms of equality. Collectively, the complementary aspects of Blumer's, Schutz's, Garfinkel's, and Dewey's thought are used to justify and launch a program of research on a neglected yet important topic: the social construction of equality in everyday life.

    Notes: Abstract  Blomstrand osteochondrodysplasia (BOCD) is a rare, autosomal recessive, lethal skeletal dysplasia characterized by generalized osteosclerosis and advanced skeletal maturation. The histopathological characteristics of three novel cases (two isolated cases and a sib-pair) of BOCD are presented and correlated with the clinical and radiographical findings, and the relevant literature is reviewed. The results of our study confirm the existence of two separate types of BOCD, which we propose naming type I: the severe, ’classical’ form, and type II: a less severe form.

    Notes: Abstract Richards Island, Northwest Territories, Canada, is characterized by thermokarst lakes which record Holocene limnological change. This study is the first report of thecamoebian assemblages and continuous annual lake water temperatures from these Arctic lakes. Ecological environments on Richards Island are influenced by a climatic gradient resulting from the contrasting influences of the cold Beaufort Sea to the north and the warm waters of the Mackenzie Delta to the east and west. This climatic gradient in turn influences modern thecamoebian assemblages, and is an indication of the complexity involved in interpreting past conditions from core material in this area. Population abundance and species diversity of thecamoebian assemblages on Richards Island are not significantly different from those reported from temperate and semi-tropical latitudes. However, certain assemblage characteristics, such as large and coarse agglutinated tests, dominance of assemblages by one or two species and low morphological variation are interpreted to be diagnostic of Arctic conditions. Thecamoebian assemblages in core material from the area indicate that the local paleolimnological conditions may have changed within the last 3 ka, and this is unrecorded in previously reported pollen data. Paleoenvironmental interpretations in a permafrost landscape have to take into account morphological instability of thermokarst lakes, which can be the cause of paleolimnological and consequently faunal change. In this area ecosystem development is clearly related to geomorphology and local climatic effects and is not exclusively controlled by regional climate change.

    Notes: Abstract SOD-1-deficient mice demonstrate no loss of motoneurons but are still vulnerable to axotomy and ischemic insults. To investigate possible reasons for vulnerability of motoneuron populations, we studied changes in ultrastructural calcium distribution during maturation in spinal- and oculomotor neurons in SOD-1–/– mice. Between 3 and 11 months the cytoplasmic component of the intracellular calcium changed at a lower rate in spinal motoneurons and motor axon terminals in the interosseus muscle of SOD-1–/– animals compared to wild-type controls. No such dissimilarities were noted in the oculomotor system, or in mitochondrial calcium contents of either cell type. These data suggest that the lack of SOD-1 may be associated with vulnerability to insult by depletion of non-mitochondrial calcium stores selectively in motoneurons lacking parvalbumin and/or calbindin D28K.

    Notes: Abstract  Bronchogenic carcinoma is the leading cause of malignancy-related mortality in the United States, with an overall 5-year survival rate of less than 15%. This aggressive behavior reflects, among other traits, the capacity of the tumor to evade normal host immune defenses, and to induce a pro-angiogenic environment. A central feature of any immune response toward tumors is the recruitment of specific immune cell populations. In the present study we investigated the infiltration of monocytes in human specimens of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The presence of macrophages in NSCLC tumors was documented by immunohistochemistry. In vitro chemotaxis assays demonstrated higher monocyte chemotactic activity in NSCLC tumor homogenates than in normal lung tissue. We next investigated the expression of CC chemokines within specimens of NSCLC tumors. Levels of the CC chemokines were higher in NSCLC tumor tissue than in normal lung tissue. Immunolocalization showed that the cells associated with antigenic CC chemokines were the malignant tumor cells, as well as occasional stromal cells. Maximal inhibition of monocyte chemotaxis induced by NSCLC in vitro occurred in the presence of neutralizing antibodies to MCP-1 and MIP-1β. On follow-up of 15 patients in whom we quantified macrophage infiltration, we found that those with recurrence of disease had higher levels of macrophage infiltration in their initial tumors. However, the functional significance of CC-chemokine-mediated macrophage infiltration into NSCLC remains to be determined.

    Notes: Abstract X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been used to compare the metal coordination of the N-terminal zinc binding domain of eukaryal human transcription factor (TF) IIB to the previously reported structure of archaeal Pyrococcus furiosus (Pf) TFB. Full length and N-terminal fragments for both PfTFBand human TFIIB were cloned, expressed, and purified. The [C10H] variant of PfTFB was constructed to resemble the metal binding motif of higher eukaryal TFIIB proteins by mutating the second cysteine ligand to a histidine. All five proteins bind zinc in a 1 :1 ratio. Zn X-ray absorption spectroscopy of human TFIIB and [C10H]PfTFB mutant are consistent with ZnS3(N,O) ligation, and further suggest that the N/O ligand is an imidazole.
