Notes: High-quality, c-oriented ZnO epitaxial films have been grown on the a surface using molecular-beam epitaxy. The use of a-oriented sapphire eliminates rotational domains and related structural defects which have limited the use of ZnO in electronic applications. The ZnO epitaxial layers are uniquely oriented with the ZnO/sapphire orientational relationship [0001]||[112¯0] and 〈112¯0〉||[0001]. This unique orientation is a consequence of the anisotropy of the a-sapphire surface in conjunction with a strong correlation along a single direction leading to the term uniaxial locked epitaxy. High-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements show an increase in x-ray lateral coherence length from several tens of nanometers to 〉0.7 μm for growth of c-oriented ZnO on the a surface as opposed to the c surface of sapphire. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: To evaluate the effect of a newly developed inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), ONO-4817, on the degradation of cartilage in the guinea pig arthritis model.¶Materials: 42 guinea pigs were used in the arthritis model.¶Treatment: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was injected into guinea pig knee joints. The content of proteoglycan released in synovial cavity was measured as a marker of cartilage degradation. ONO-4817, dexamethasone or indomethacin were administered orally to the animals.¶Results: ONO-4817 showed a broad inhibitory activity against MMPs except MMP-1 and MMP-7. The oral administration of ONO-4817 dose-dependently suppressed the release of proteoglycan from the cartilage of the knee joints.¶Conclusion: This study suggests the possibility that a novel MMP inhibitor, ONO-4817 may have a therapeutic utility for MMP-related diseases.

Notes: Abstract Systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is rare disorder characterized by unexplained episodic capillary hy-perpermeability, resulting in generalized edema and hypovolemic shock. During acute episodes, there is characteristic elevated hematocrit and reduced serum protein. We report a 55-year-old man who had two recurrent episodes of SCLS. Laboratory findings revealed severe hypoalbuminemia, sudden elevation of hematocrit, and paraprotein IgG κ chain in his serum. The patient had acute oliguric renal failure during the acute episode. Despite receiving a large amount of fluid resuscitation, his hematocrit rose to 71.4%. After combination therapy of venesection and fluid resuscitation, massive diuresis occurred, and the symptoms were alleviated. We found that venesection was effective in controlling the acute episode of SCLS, without troublesome adverse effects. Although prophylactic therapy with terbutaline and theophylline is effective for SCLS, treatment in the acute phase is still empirical. We conclude that fluid replacement therapy accompanied by venesection is an alternative regimen in patients with severe capillary leakage.
