    Notes: Abstract In this study we attempted to clarify the release of nitric oxide (NO) and its role in the ischemia-reperfusion rat kidney. After right nephrectomy, male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: one sham operated and three groups who underwent ischemia (30 min) and reperfusion of the left renal artery. Thirty minutes prior to ischemia-reperfusion, two groups were injected intraperitoneally with 10 and 30 mg/kg of NG-nitro-l-arginine methylester (L-NAME). Real-time monitoring of blood flow and NO release in the rat kidney was measured with a laser Doppler flowmeter and an NO-selective electrode, respectively. Serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were measured 1 and 7 days after the induction of ischemia-reperfusion. Clamping of the renal artery decreased blood flow to 1–5% of the basal level measured before clamping. After removal of the clip, the blood flow of the 30 mg/kg L-NAME rats was significantly lower than that of the controls. Immediately following the clipping of the renal artery, NO release rapidly increased. After removing the clip, NO release immediately returned to three-quarters of the basal level. Serum creatinine and BUN levels of the ischemia-reperfusion rats were slightly but not significantly higher and those of 30 mg L-NAME rats were significantly higher than those of the control or ischemia-reperfusion rats 1 day and 7 days after ischemia-reperfusion. Our data suggest that NO acts as a cytoprotective agent in ischemia-reperfusion injury of the rat kidney.

    Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. To investigate whether proinsulin C peptide influences sympathetic nerve activity directly or indirectly through parasympathetic nerve activity. Methods. The proliferative response of splenic lymphocytes to Concanavalin A (ConA response) which is known to be suppressed by subjection of rats to footshock or intracerebroventricular injection of corticotropin-releasing factor through sympathetic nerve activation was measured. Effect of C peptide alone or before subjection to footshock or injection of corticotropin-releasing factor was examined. Results. Intraperitoneal injection of C peptide was without effect on the basal ConA response, while subjection to footshock or injection of corticotropin-releasing factor lowered it. In contrast, prior injection of C peptide obviated the footshock and corticotropin-releasing factor-induced suppression of the response. When given intracerebroventricularly, C peptide was also effective at much smaller doses. Prior injection of atropine cancelled the C-peptide effects. Conclusion/interpretation. Our results indicate that C peptide counteracts the sympathetic nerve-mediated suppression of splenic lymphocyte proliferation in an atropine-sensitive manner. Thus, C peptide probably activates the parasympathetic nervous system through the afferent mechanism, that in turn antagonizes the sympathetic nerve-mediated suppression of splenic lymphocyte functions.     Notes: Abstract  With a model system of pBR322 plasmid DNA solution in vitro, the dose effects of radiation- induced single- and double-strand breaks (SSB and DSB) were measured and DSB was distinguished into α- and β-types. Under the condition of low scavenging capacity existing in the irradiated DNA solution, SSB and αDSB were mainly induced by hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Moreover, a certain relationship was obtained between the SSB and αDSB yields and the DNA concentration. It was found that when the DNA solution was irradiated in the presence of 2.5 mmol dm–3 mannitol, the reciprocals of G(SSB) and G(αDSB), respectively, were linearly related to the reciprocal of the DNA concentration, i.e. the competition reactions of DNA and mannitol for ·OH radicals can be described by second-order kinetics. The rate coefficients and the efficiencies of the ·OH radical inducing SSB were deduced. Also, the reaction rate coefficients and the efficiencies for the induction of αDSB from SSB by the ·OH radical transfer mechanism, were first derived from the competition kinetics.

    Notes: Abstract The fading of flower color in bluish purple and reddish purple cultivars of Iris ensata and the in vitro stability of malvidin 3RGac5Gand petunidin 3RGac5G due to copigmentation with isovetixin under different pH conditions were examined. The bluish purple cultivars exhibited higher flower color stability than the reddish purple cultivars 2 days after anthesis. In the absence of isovitexin, malvidin 3RGac5G and petunidin 3RGac5G were not able to maintain color stability except at low pH. However, the color stability of malvidin 3RGac5G and petunidin 3RGac5G was increased by copigmentation with isovitexin under all pH conditions tested. Most remarkable was the stabilization of both anthocyanins due to the copigmentation at pH 4.2–6.2. Therefore, it can be concluded that the stability of flower color in the bluish purple cultivars of malvidin 3RGac5Gand petunidin 3RGac5G type of I. ensata is caused at least in part by the copigmentation between these anthocyanins and isovitexin.

    Notes: Abstract Ultrasonic particle arrangement method was used for the fabrication of composite materials with layer or lattice structures. Guest particles were periodically arranged in a host solution by using ultrasonic standing waves, and then the solution was solidified to obtain a solid composite material. The sample cell was rotated during the solidification process to prevent particle sedimentation. Polymer, glass, or metal particles with various shapes were ultrasonically arranged in a polysiloxane resin, which was useful as a host material due to its simple solidification process and suitability for forming fine structures. Composite materials with periodic structures were successfully fabricated by this method.

    Notes: Abstract A new bio-active bone cement, known as CAP, has been developed as an alternative to acrylic bone cement. CAP has improved mechanical properties, with a high modulus that is over five times that of PMMA. The effects of this high modulus are examined by finite element analysis, when the CAP is used in place of PMMA to fix the femoral component in total hip prostheses. The results show a higher tensile stress of 8.76 MPa in the CAP cement, compared with 1.99 MPa in the PMMA cement. However, it is also shown that CAP has a superior fatigue strength of approximately 40 MPa, obtained from a cyclic loading test.
