Beschreibung: In circuit switching networks call streams are characterized by their mean and peakedness (two-moment method). The $GI/M/C/0$ system is used to model a single link, where the $GI$-stream is determined by fitting moments appropriately. For the moments of the overflow traffic of a $GI/M/C/0$ system there are efficient numerical algorithms available. However, for the moments of the freed carried traffic, defined as the moments of a virtual link of infinite capacity to which the process of calls accepted by the link (carried arrival process) is virtually directed and where the virtual calls get fresh exponential i.i.d.\ holding times, only complex numerical algorithms are available. This is the reason why the concept of the freed carried traffic is not used rigorously. The main result of this paper is an efficient algorithm for computing the moments of the freed carried traffic, in particular an explicit formula for its peakedness. This result offers a unified handling of both overflow and carried traffics in networks. Furthermore, some refined characteristics for the overflow and freed carried streams are derived.

Beschreibung: Two traffic streams $\Phi_1$, $\Phi_2$ are offered a link. The calls of $\Phi_i$ require exponential holding times with parameter $\mu$ and are accepted if less than $C_i$ trunks are occupied. Approximating the $\Phi_i$ by appropriate renewal processes meeting their first two moments, defined as the moments of the numbers of calls in virtual links of infinite capacity to which the traffic streams as freed traffics are virtually directed and where the calls get fresh exponential i.i.d.\ holding times with parameter $\mu$, stable recursive algorithms of complexity $O(\max(C_1,C_2))$ are derived for the first two defined as above moments of the individual overflow and freed carried traffics. The results offer a unified handling of both overflow and carried traffics in circuit switching networks with trunk reservation, providing a basis for new two-moment network dimensioning algorithms.

Notizen: Wurtzite GaN layers are commonly grown heteroepitaxially on 6H–SiC or Al2O3 substrates, because of the lack of lattice-matched substrates. We study the influence of these substrates mainly on the E2(high)-phonon Raman line by temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy. We find that the line broadening with sample heating is predominantly caused by intrinsic phonon–phonon scattering in GaN. The small three-phonon contribution as well as the small intrinsic linewidth at low temperature are due to the rather low two-phonon density of states at the E2(high)-phonon energy. Substrates with large lattice mismatch cause inhomogeneous strain and defects in the layers, which lead to a large, temperature independent, line broadening. We show that the temperature shift of the E2(high)-phonon frequency is dominated by the GaN lattice expansion. The lattice of epilayers is strongly modified by the thermal in-plane expansion of the substrate. The degree of relaxation at the growth temperature is reflected by deviation of the E2(high)-line from the intrinsic phonon frequency. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Generation–recombination noise is observed in Si-doped aluminum nitride (AlN:Si). Both the magnitude and the characteristic frequency of the generation–recombination noise power density are found to be thermally activated. Using a model based on charge carrier number fluctuations in a two-level system, transition energies and potential barriers of the DX center formed by Si donors in AlN are quantitatively determined. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Crystalline SiGe alloy sheet polymers were topotactically prepared from epitaxially grown calcium germanosilicide Ca(Si1−xGex)2 precursor films in the whole composition range. These polygermanosilynes are found to be a well-defined mixture of the known siloxene and polygermyne sheet polymers with the OH groups exclusively bonded to silicon. The optical properties determined by photoluminescence and optical reflection measurements identify the mixed SiGe sheet polymers as direct semiconductors with efficient luminescence tunable in the energy range between 2.4 and 1.3 eV. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The unimolecular dissociation of HCO in its ground electronic state is considered. By performing calculations (filter diagonalization, absorbing potential) for nonzero angular momentum quantum numbers, it is demonstrated how mixings with near-by "background" states affect the linewidths of the narrower resonance states. This explains qualitatively the theoretically as well as experimentally observed behavior of the linewidth as a function of the vibrational quantum numbers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Neurophysiological studies in monkeys suggest selective representation of behaviourally relevant information in working memory. So far, no behavioural evidence for this has been reported for humans. Here, we investigated the role of behavioural relevance for access to human visuospatial working memory by using delayed oculomotor response tasks. Subjects were presented two successive visual cues in different and unpredictable locations while fixating on a central fixation point. After a delay, an unpredictable auditory signal (one beep or two beeps) sounded and the central fixation point was turned off, initiating the oculomotor response (i.e. memory-guided saccade) phase. Two groups of 10 subjects each were studied in two conditions: in the ‘relevant’ condition, subjects were instructed to memorize both visual cues and to move the eyes to the remembered position of the first cue (one beep) or the second cue (two beeps). The same stimuli were used in the ‘irrelevant’ condition, but subjects were instructed to memorize and move the eyes to the position of the first cue only, regardless of the second cue and the auditory signal. In the ‘relevant’ condition, we found a significant increase in errors of memory-guided saccades to the first cue, when the second cue was located between central fixation point and first cue. This spatially selective interference effect disappeared in the ‘irrelevant’ condition, despite identical stimuli. On a behavioural level, these results show for the first time the significance of behavioural relevance for access to human spatial working memory. These findings complement recent single-neuron studies in monkeys, showing that the neuronal substrates of working memory selectively represent behaviourally relevant perceptual information.

Notizen: Summary: The gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) is composed of lymphocytes residing in Peyer's patches, lamina propria, and intraepithelial compartments. In addition to these features which distinguish GALT from other peripheral sites of the immune system, the gastrointestinal immune system is also composed of resident eosinophils. Eosinophils are generally considered to be peripheral blood leukocytes that have an important pro-inflammatory role in various immune disorders. Although most research concerning this cell has focused on understanding its trafficking and function in the blood and lung, recent studies have also started to elucidate its regulation and function in the gastrointestinal tract. Interestingly, eosinophil numbers in the gastrointestinal tract are substantially higher than in other tissues. At baseline (healthy conditions), most eosinophils reside in the lamina propria in the stomach and intestine. Eosinophil homing to these sites occurs during embryonic development and their levels in perinatal mice are comparable to those in adults, indicating that their homing is not dependent upon the presence of intestinal flora. Furthermore, eosinophil localization to the lamina propria at baseline is critically regulated by eotaxin, a chemokine constitutively expressed throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Although eotaxin is required for eosinophil homing, its expression in the esophagus is not sufficient for eosinophil accumulation, since this organ is devoid of eosinophils at baseline. During Th2-associated inflammatory conditions (e.g. interleukin (IL)-5 overexpression or oral allergen challenge), marked increases of eosinophils occur not only in the lamina propria but also in Peyer's patches. The accumulation of Peyer's patch eosinophils, which mainly occurs in the outer cortex and interfollicular regions, is critically regulated by IL-5 and less significantly by eotaxin, suggesting the involvement of other eosinophil chemokines in this lymphoid compartment. Preliminary investigations have shown that gastrointestinal eosinophils express the α4β7 integrin and that this molecule is responsible, in part, for eosinophil homing. In summary, eosinophils are resident cells of the gastrointestinal immune system whose levels can be induced by antigen exposure under Th2 conditions, in a manner that is critically regulated by eotaxin and IL-5. We propose that eosinophils are integral members of the gastrointestinal immune system and are likely to be important in innate, regulatory and inflammatory immune responses. This work was supported in part by the National Health Medical Research Council (Australia) C.J. Notizen: Beta-haemolytic streptococci are important human and animal pathogens: their genetic traits that are associated with the ability to infect human hosts remain, however, unclear. The surface protein, Lmb, mediates the adherence of Streptococcus agalactiae to human laminin. For further analysis of the corresponding gene, the adjacent genomic regions were sequenced. Lmb is localized on a putative composite transposon of 16 kb and is flanked by two copies of a novel insertion sequence element (ISSag2). It harbours the genes scpB and lmb, which are 98% identical with the respective genes of Streptococcus pyogenes. Analysis of the distribution of these genes and ISSag2 among 131 streptococcal strains revealed that all of the human isolates, but only 20% (12 of 61) of the animal isolates, contained scpB and lmb or their homologues. To investigate if the putative transposon can be mobilized, an erythromycin resistance marker was incorporated into the lmb gene of S. agalactiae. Screening for mutant strains with a regained susceptibility for erythromycin identified strains with a deletion of scpB, lmb, and one copy of ISSag2. We hypothesize that a horizontal gene transfer caused the exchange of scpB and lmb and that the ability of S. pyogenes, S. agalactiae and group C and G streptococcal strains to colonize or infect human hosts is dependent on their presence.
