    Notes: We report on a medium exhibiting extremely efficient light scattering properties: a liquid network formed in a porous silicon matrix. We find that the scattering efficiency depends strongly on the filling factor of the liquid in the pores, its dielectric constant, and the type of termination of the internal surface of the layer. The spectral dependence of the scattering length of photons evidences the fact that the phenomenon is governed by a Mie-type scattering mechanism. The mean free path of photons in this medium is found to be in the micrometer range. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The turbulent coagulation of micron-sized colloidal particles in a liquid is controlled by the shearing motion produced by Kolmogorov scale eddies. The rate of energy dissipation has fluctuations which vary over the integral length and time scale in a homogeneous, isotropic turbulent flow. We present a model of the particle concentrations and coagulation rates in a set of fluid packets that are large compared with the Kolmogorov scale and small compared with the integral scale. Particle coagulation occurs rapidly in regions of the flow with large dissipation rates, leading to a depletion of singlet particles. Thus, the singlet number density is negatively correlated with the shear rate. Turbulent mixing mitigates these concentration variations and the particle concentration field becomes nearly uncorrelated with dissipation rate in very dilute suspensions with φRλ(very-much-less-than)1. Here, φ is the particle volume fraction and Rλ is the Reynolds number based on the Taylor microscale. A simulation of a suspension of coalescing drops shows that the imperfect mixing at finite φRλ broadens the drop size distribution. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method for altering the local direction and angular dispersion of anisotropy in soft magnetic films using energetic ion irradiation is demonstrated. NiFe films 50 Å thick were irradiated with 200 keV Ar+ ions to doses between 1013 and 1016 ions/cm2, while a saturating magnetic field was applied to the samples. This annealing field defined the new anisotropy direction of the irradiated areas, and the irradiation process also led to changes in the angular dispersion of anisotropy orientation, as measured by angle-dependent remanence of magnetization. By appropriate masking of films, this technique has been used to pattern samples with small "anisotropy domains." © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Growth front aspects of copper nanocluster films deposited with low energy onto silicon substrates at room temperature are investigated by atomic force microscopy. Analyses of the height-difference correlation function yield a roughness exponent H of 0.45±0.05. The root-mean-sqaure roughness amplitude w evolves with deposition time as a power law, w∝tβ (β=0.62±0.07), leading also to a power-law increase of the local surface slope ρ, ρ∝tc (c=0.73±0.09). These scaling exponents, in combination with an asymmetrical height distribution, point at a complex nonlinear roughening mechanism dominated by the formation of voids resulting in a highly porous film. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Tensile tests were performed for Zn at room temperature, which show elongations of 110%–20% for average grain sizes of 240–23 nm, respectively. The ductility of ultrafine-grained and nanocrystalline Zn was found to decrease with grain size refinement. The deformation mechanisms in ultrafine-grained Zn are believed to be a mixture of grain boundary sliding of small nanograins and intra-grain dislocation creep within the large grains. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Occupational skin disease (OSD) is a significant public health concern. To keep OSDs under surveillance, a register of OSDs (BKH-S) was implemented in 1999 in the Saarland, FRG. We conducted a population-based register study to analyse all initial reports of OSDs reported to the BKH-S. 336 cases were prospectively assessed from July 1999 to June 2001. In 78% (n = 263) of the cases an occupational cause for the skin disease was stated, 91% (n = 240) of which fell within 16 occupational groups. This is equivalent to 6.8 cases per 10,000 workers per year within these occupational groups. Notably, young age groups (median age 35 years) were affected with a female predominance. The most frequent final diagnosis was irritant contact dermatitis (75%) followed by allergic contact dermatitis (34%) and atopic dermatitis (19%). The overall prevalence of occupationally relevant delayed-type reactors was 21% and of immediate-type reactors 17%. Work-related delayed-type sensitizations to potassium dichromate (n = 8) and immediate-type sensitizations to natural rubber latex (n = 11) were the most frequently observed. Questionnaire results showed frequent occupational skin contact with wet work (59%), detergents (48%), and disinfectants (38%). The second valid surveillance scheme for OSD in the FRG has been introduced and can be made available for further analysis.

    Notes: An ultrafast photoinduced charge transfer event in condensed phase is simulated. The interaction with the field is treated explicitly within a time-dependent framework. The description of the interaction of the system with its environment is based on the surrogate Hamiltonian method where the infinite number of degrees of freedom of the environment is approximated by a finite set of two-level modes for a limited time. This method is well suited to ultrafast events, since it is not limited by weak coupling between system and environment. Moreover, the influence of the external field on the system-bath coupling is included naturally. The surrogate Hamiltonian method is generalized to incorporate two electronic states including all possible system-bath interactions. The method is applied to a description of a pump-probe experiment where every step of the cycle is treated consistently. Dynamical variables are considered which go beyond rates of charge transfer such as the transient absorption spectrum. The parameters of the model are chosen to mimic the mixed valence system (NH3)5RuNCRu(CN)5−. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background Asthma has been reported to be rare among Inuits, but so far total and specific IgE levels have never been determined in arctic populations.Objective To determine the prevalence of atopy in children living in an arctic environment, and to examine whether atopy and total IgE levels were associated with parental place of birth, as a measure of ethnicity, and travel history.Material and Methods All schoolchildren in Sisimiut, a community on the West coast of Greenland, were screened for atopy. Blood samples were analysed for total IgE and for specific IgE against inhalant and food allergens. Information on place of birth of children and their parents was obtained from national registries. Information on travel history was obtained from self-administered questionnaires.Results A total of 1031 schoolchildren aged 5 to 18 years had a blood sample drawn (85% of available children for the study). Of these, 151 (14.6%) children were sensitized to at least one inhalant allergen and 42 (4.1%) to at least one food allergen. Sensitization to grass was most common, whereas sensitization to mugwort, birch, animal-dander and house-dust mite was infrequent. Children whose parents were both born abroad had a higher risk of sensitization to inhalant allergens compared with children born of Greenlandic parents (OR = 8.6, 95% CI 2.8–27.1). Furthermore, children who had been abroad had a higher risk of sensitization towards pollen (OR = 1.6, 95% CI 1.0–2.5) and animal-dander (OR = 2.1, 95% CI 1.0–4.6) after adjustment for confounders. Both atopic and non-atopic children demonstrated high levels of total IgE (medians of 251 and 58 kU/L).Conclusions Compared with European findings Greenlandic children have high levels of total IgE but a low prevalence of allergic sensitization towards inhalant allergens. This may be due to a low genetic susceptibility to atopy and less allergen exposure, as well as to living conditions in an arctic environment.
