    Notes: In this article, we present a simple method for the determination of the absolute internal quantum efficiency of thin organic dye layers. The basic idea is the comparison of the luminescence of the film with the reflection of a white diffusive reflectance standard measured at one angle with a simple spectrofluorometer. The method is compared to the procedure of de Mello [J. C. de Mello, H. F. Wittmann and R. H. Friend, Adv. Mater. 9, 230 (1997)], which uses an integrating sphere. As examples, the quantum yields of films of the two perylene derivatives N,N′-dimethylperylene-3,4:9,10-dicarboximide and 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, are determined. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present a study of controlled n-type doping in molecular organic semiconductors: Naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride is doped by cosublimation with the donor molecule bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene. Electrical parameters are deduced from temperaturedependent measurements of the conductivity and the thermopower for various dopant concentrations. The results are compared to the predictions of a standard model commonly used for crystalline semiconductors. The Fermi level shifts towards the transport level, the conductivity is increased, and the mobility decreases with the doping ratio. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: TP508 is a synthetic peptide corresponding to amino acids 508 through 530 of human prothrombin. We previously demonstrated that a single topical application of TP508 stimulates revascularization and healing of acute incisional and excisional wounds in normal, healthy rat skin. To determine if TP508 would enhance wound healing in ischemic skin, we used bipedicle flaps, cranially based flaps, and free grafts to surgically create ischemic regions on the backs of rats. Full-thickness, circular excisions were made within the flaps or grafts and immediately treated with a single application of saline ± TP508 (0.1 μg/wound). Compared to wound closure in normal skin, ischemic skin wounds exhibited delayed closure, and the length of delay correlated with the degree of surgically induced ischemia. TP508 significantly accelerated closure in both normal and ischemic skin, resulting in closure rates that were increased within the first 7 days of wounding by 30% in normal tissue and bipedicle flaps, 50% in cranially based flaps, and 225% in free grafts. Moreover, in both flap models, TP508 restored the rate of closure to a rate approximating the control rate observed in normal skin. Histological comparisions of wound tissue from normal skin and cranially based flaps showed that ischemia reduced early recruitment of inflammatory cells at day 1 but increased inflammatory cell numbers in wound beds at day 14. TP508 treatment of ischemic flap wounds significantly increased early inflammatory cell recruitment and restored the normal rapid resolution of the inflammatory phase. In addition, at day 7, TP508-treated wounds appeared to have an increased number of large functional blood vessels compared to saline controls. These studies support the potential efficacy of TP508 in treating ischemic wounds in humans.

    Notes: Thrombin is an essential factor in hemostasis, inflammation, and tissue repair. The synthetic thrombin peptide, TP508, binds to high-affinity thrombin receptors and mimics cellular effects of thrombin at sites of tissue injury. Treatment of full-thickness excisional wounds in normal rats with a single topical application of 0.1 μg TP508 (14 pmol/cm2) reproducibly accelerates wound closure, yielding wounds that on average close 39% more than controls by day 7 (p 〈 0.001). Wounds treated with 1.0 μg TP508 are 35% and 43% (p 〈 0.001) smaller than controls on day 7 and 10, respectively. The early rate of closure is ~40% greater in TP508-treated than vehicle-treated wounds (20 versus 14 mm2/day) and remains higher through day 7. Breaking strength after closure is slightly greater (15–23%) in wounds treated with TP508 than with saline alone. Histologic comparisons show that TP508 enhances recruitment of inflammatory cells to the wound site within 24 hours post-injury. TP508 treatment also augments revascularization of injured tissue, as evidenced at day 7 by the larger size of functional vessels in the granulation tissue and by the directed development of blood vessels to wounds. These studies raise the possibility that TP508 may be clinically useful in management of open wounds.

    Notes: Background.  A vast number of data indicate that the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infections is positively correlated with age and is different in various countries. Although our knowledge of transmission of H. pylori is very limited, it is reasonable to assume that it could be much more contagious in closed communities, for example in garrisons, than in normal populations.Methods.  Young male recruits (aged 19–23 years) in the Hungarian Army were tested for seropositivity at the beginning and at the end of their military service.Results.  The prevalence of H. pylori seropositivity was found to be 23% (♦CI95%: 21–24%) among the young male recruits. Seroconversion among the formerly seronegative persons after completing either their 9-month or 6-month military service was 30% (CI95%: 25–35%) and 23% (CI95%: 8–45%), respectively. In those groups, where either the H. pylori infection was eradicated by antibiotics or hygienic countermeasures were introduced, the infection rate was reduced from 23% to 11% (CI95%: 3–25%) and to 0% (CI95%: 0–6%); p 〉 .2 and p 〈 .002, respectively.Conclusion.  Our data suggest that, although H. pylori has a very high contagiosity in closed communities, its spread can be reduced or even prevented by medication of the infected persons and/or by improving the hygienic conditions and introducing anti-infective sanitary regulations.

    Notes: Global P Wave Duration on the 65-Lead ECG. Introduction: Pacing is believed to prevent atrial fibrillation by reducing atrial activation time. Exact correlation between P wave duration (PWD) on surface ECG and endocardial atrial activation time is still unexplored. Methods and Results: In 15 patients without structural heart disease (9 women, age 45 ± 14 years), single site [high right atrium (HRA), coronary sinus ostium (CSos), distal CS (CSd), high RA septum (Bachmann's bundle, BB)] and dual-site pacing (various combinations) was performed after ablation of supraventricular tachycardia. A 65-lead surface ECG was recorded simultaneously. Endocardial atrial activation time was measured off-line (stimulus – last bipolar recording), and the respective PWD was assessed using the root mean square and 65-channel summary plots. PWD during pacing from BB was significantly shorter (96 ± 12 msec) than during HRA (121 ± 15 msec), CSos (108 ± 9 msec), and CSd pacing (126 ± 14 msec; P 〈 0,01, respectively). PWD during dual-site pacing (HRA + BB, 91 ± 14 msec; HRA + CSos, 96 ± 7 msec; HRA + CSd, 90 ± 7 msec; BB + CSd, 96 ± 12 msec) was not significantly shorter than during pacing from BB. Correlation between endocardial atrial activation time and PWD was 0.83. Conclusion: PWD during single-site and dual-site atrial pacing represents endocardial atrial activation time and can be measured precisely using the 65-lead surface ECG. The fact that high septal pacing results in the shortest PWD may have implications for preventive pacing in patients with atrial fibrillation.

    Notes: Gallium oxide hydroxide (GaOOH·xH2O) single crystals were synthesized in aqueous solutions by using two different precipitation techniques: homogeneous decomposition of urea and forced hydrolysis in pure water. Precipitation of crystals started at exactly the same pH value (i.e., 2.05 at 85°C) in both cases. The morphology of crystals turned out to be quite different (zeppelin-like with urea, rodlike without urea) in each of the above methods. Calcination of these gallium oxide hydroxide crystals in air at temperatures ≥500°C transformed them into Ga2O3. Characterization of the samples was performed by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and ICP, carbon, and nitrogen analyses.

    Notes: Amorphous Si-B-C-N ceramic powder samples obtained by thermolysis of boron-modified polysilazane, {B[C2H4Si(H)NH]3}n, were isothermally annealed at different temperatures (1400–1800°C) and hold times (3, 10, 30, and 100 h). A qualitative and semiquantitative analysis of the crystallization behavior of the materials was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The phase evolution was additionally followed by 11B and 29Si MAS NMR as well as by FT-IR spectroscopy in transmission and diffuse reflection (DRIFTS) modes. Bulk chemical analyses of selected samples were performed to determine changes in the chemistry/phase composition of the materials. It was observed that silicon carbide is the first phase to nucleate around 1400–1500°C, whereas silicon nitride nucleates at and above 1700°C. Crystallization accelerates with increasing annealing temperature and proceeds with increasing annealing time. Furthermore, the surface area of the powders strongly influences the thermal stability of silicon nitride and thus controls overall chemical and phase composition of the materials on thermal treatment.
