Notes: Amounts of spontaneous spin splittings were estimated from low-temperature magnetoresistances in two-dimensional electron gases created at In0.75Ga0.25As/In0.75Al0.25As heterojunctions under a gate bias. Typical sheet electron densities and mobilities in the raw wafers were ∼1.0×1012/cm2 and 2–5×105 cm2/V s at 1.5 K, respectively. A maximum spin-orbit coupling constant αzero of ∼30(×10−12 eV m) was obtained for the van der Pauw sample. In gated Hall-bar samples, a decrease in the αzero value with decreasing gate voltage (Vg) was first confirmed in a normal heterojunction. The main origin for such a large αzero, which is a few times larger than any previously reported, was found to be a structure-dependent so-called interface contribution in the Rashba term. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Carbon–ion cancer treatment is successfully being made at the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). Design philosophy for the ion sources for medical facilities are as follows: (1) sufficient beam intensity, a few hundred e μA; (2) long lifetime with good stability; (3) easy operation and easy maintenance; and (4) compactness. In order to develop such source for future heavy-ion facilities, we have tested compact electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources using permanent magnets both for axial and radial confinement of hot electrons. Since the yield of C2+ ion in the first developed source (2.45 GHz ECR) was 15 e μA and far below the medical requirement (∼150 e μA for the HIMAC), a new source has been proposed, having a frequency of 10 GHz. The extracted intensity of C4+ (and C2+) ions is expected to be higher than 200 e μA. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Immediately after exhaustive swimming, rats were given one of the following orally: distilled water (W), glucose (G); acetic acid (A); citric acid (C); glucose and acetic acid (GA); and glucose and citric acid (GC), and they were killed 2 h after ingestion (each trial: n=4). Exhaustive exercise resulted in a significant reduction of the glycogen store in the gastrocnemius muscle. The glycogen stores in the liver were significantly higher following ingestion in groups GA and GC, in the gastrocnemius in groups G, GA and GC, and in the soleus in group GC, than immediately post exercise. These results suggest that oral acetic acid with glucose can facilitate liver glycogen restoration during the early period of recovery, and that acetate has about the same physiological effects as citrate on glycogen replenishment.

Notes: In the present study, measurements of broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) were used as indications of bone quality in elderly residents of an old people’s home. To investigate the possibility of using number of steps walked as an indicator of the role played by exercise on bone quality, we studied the relationship between BUA and the number of steps, taken as a measure of the number of impacts against the ground placing a direct mechanical stress on the bones. The subjects were 59 healthy elderly women with a mean age of 78±8 years who had no impairments in walking or daily life. A statistical analysis of the relationship between age, number of steps, BUA, stride length, and walking speed revealed that number of steps and BUA declined with age, and that BUA increased with a greater number of steps. Among other factors, age was found to be negatively correlated with weight (r=−0.343, P〈0.01), BUA (r=−0.542, P〈0.001), total number of steps (r=−0.524, P〈0.001) and past exercise habits (r=−0.425, P〈0.001). There were positive correlations between BUA and total number of steps (r=0.606, P〈0.001), walking speed (r=0.460, P〈0.001), stride length (r=0.373, P〈0.01) and past exercise habits (r=0.429, P〈0.001). These results show that the benefit to bone quality increases the more a person walks in daily life. The above demonstrates that degree of walking activity is positively correlated to bone quality among the elderly. These results also suggest that, when investigating the relationship between exercise and bone quality, one should look not only at distance and walking speed, but also number of steps as the number of impacts against the ground that place a direct mechanical stress on the bones. This may prove to be a useful indicator of bone quality in future use.

Notes: We have performed the fs pump–probe experiment on the B˜→a˜ nonadiabatic transition in the Hg–CO vdW complex. It is found that the transition occurs near the point where Hg and CO come nearest to each other on the B˜-state surface with a probability of 0.07 for their single encounter. This experiment serves as the first observation of the wave packet dynamics associated with an intermolecular energy flow in the vdW interaction. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Several evaluation methods for soybean chilling tolerance at the reproductive stage were examined under artificial climatic conditions. Comparisons were made on plants in control and treated plots using three cultivars differing in the level of chilling tolerance. In all methods, plants were grown at 22/17°C (day/night) until first flowering, and then transferred to growth chambers at 24/17°C for control and 15/15°C for chilling treatment, respectively. A method, in which plants were grown at 20/16°C after 4 weeks of the different temperature treatments, proved comparable to the conventional one, in which chilling tolerance at the flowering stage is evaluated using natural and artificial conditions. Another method, in which the plants in chilling treatment plots were grown at 15°C until maturity, also proved usable to evaluate genotypic differences in chilling tolerance independently of maturity time.

Notes: A compact electron cyclotron resonance ion source has been developed for heavy-ion medical facilities. The beam intensity and stability were considerably improved by recent modifications on three points (length of sextupole, cooling system for the extraction electrode, and position of the Einzel lens). Initial results of C4+ beam tests show that an intensity of 180 eμA can be routinely obtained with simple tuning. The best record was 220 eμA for C4+, which meets the medical requirements. Throughout these tests, CH4 gas was used with 0.1 cc/min and the extraction voltage was fixed at 25 kV. Results on beam emittance and long-term stability are also briefly discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We recently reported on the first observation of ion-pumping phenomenon in a low-duty pulsed Penning source at the heavy-ion medical accelerator (HIMAC) in Chiba and its effectiveness to produce multiply charged ions [Y. Sato et al., Nucl. Instrum Methods Phys. Res. A 450, 231 (2000)]. In the Penning-ionized gauge ion source (PIGIS) of the HIMAC, the gas flow is not being pulsed, but there is a transient pressure response in the source when the arc is pulsed that permits the production of high-charge-state ions under a reasonably low gas pressure obtained by ion pumping. The best record for Ar8+ is 700 eμA in a peak under a constant gas flow of 0.2 cc/min, an extraction voltage of 24 kV, and a pulsed arc power of 1 kV and 5 A with a duty factor of 0.5% (25 W on average). This yield is higher than those of cw PIGISs by a factor of 100–1000 having a similar design and power (peak). This article gives a brief review for the mechanism and effects of ion pumping in a pulsed PIGIS. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Experiments on induced spawning of the anostomid fish Leporinus elongatus Val. 1849, an important neotropical migratory fish, were carried out at Três Marias Fish Hatchery Station, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, to develop a reliable protocol for inducing breeding in this species. L. elongatus matures reliably in earthen ponds to a point at which final maturation can be induced with carp pituitary extract. The following data were recorded: number of extruded eggs (g ova−1) = 2444 ± 740; stripped ova weight:body weight = 13.1 ± 2.9%; retained (ovulated but not stripped) ova weight:body weight = 5.8 ± 2.6%; initial fertility = 318.7 × 103± 149.2 × 103; final fertility = 229.3 × 103± 129.3 × 103; egg fertilization rate = 63.8 ± 16.4% and ≈ 229 000 larvae per female. The relationships between stripping time and water temperature and between hatching and water temperature were given by the same exponential equation t= ae–bT. The relationships between body weight (Wt) and initial (IF) and final fertility (FF) were expressed by the equations: IF =−9382 + 322 047 × Wt (r2= 0.84); FF =−40 780 + 265 062 × Wt (r2= 0.75).
