    Notes: Defect formation in dehydrated silica glasses was investigated using various excimer lasers with different energies. The ArF laser (6.4 eV) generates the E' center more effectively than the KrF laser (5.0 eV), while the XeCl laser (4.0 eV) generated no centers. Defect generation was found to be proportional to the square of the laser photon density, indicating that it occurs dominantly due to a two-photon process which makes band-to-band excitation possible. The E' center probably originated from oxygen-deficient centers. Contributions to the E' center formation from a process involving direct absorption at the sites of intrinsic defects in SiO2 glass were discussed on the basis of the excitation energy dependence and a comparison with the effect of a low-pressure mercury lamp.

    Notes: The specific lattice location of Zn in CdTe single crystals has been investigated by ion-channeling methods combined with particle-induced x-ray emission. Observing the asymmetry effects of channeling dips around the [110] axis and analyzing the asymmetry factors for host atoms and doped Zn atoms, it is revealed that almost all Zn atoms occupy the Cd sublattice sites, and Zn-doped CdTe crystals grown by vertical Bridgman methods appear to be almost completely free from the segregation of doped Zn atoms.

    Notes: Residual Ga and As atoms in SiOx and SiNy dielectric films deposited on GaAs were investigated by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and particle-induced x-ray emission techniques. Both Ga and As atoms were detected in the films after high temperature heat treatment, and even in the films as-deposited. The magnitude of the residual atoms presumably out-diffused from GaAs substrates was of the order of 1×1019 /cm3. The concentration of Ga atoms prevails over that of As atoms in SiOx/GaAs systems as is generally known, and vice versa in SiNy/GaAs systems after heat treatment. Dynamic behavior of Ga and As atoms in the films as functions of annealing temperature and annealing time cannot be explained by a simple diffusion mechanism. A model is proposed that the damaged layer around the interface of the systems is responsible for the anomalous out-diffusion phenomena.

    Notes: The spadix of skunk cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus, is capable of maintaining an internal temperature of around 20 °C even when the ambient temperature drops to around 0 °C. To determine the crucial structure that is required for detection of ambient temperature signals, detailed measurements of the temperatures of the spadix were made under field conditions. The spadix temperature was well regulated even when the spathe or the leaf of the plant was removed. Furthermore, maintenance of the temperature of the central stalk at either 10 or 20 °C had no effect on the thermoregulation when the ambient temperature increased from 10 to 25 °C or decreased from 20 to 8 °C. Therefore, it seemed that the heat production in the spadix required neither the spathe, the leaf, nor the central stalk for perception of the external temperature signals. Finally, analysis of sugar composition in xylem exudates showed that the concentrations of sucrose, glucose, and fructose, all of which are potential energy sources of thermogenesis, did not change significantly at different ambient temperatures. It is concluded that the spadix is a unique organ in which the perception of ambient temperature signals and heat production occurs in S. foetidus.

Germination modes of lower seeds of cocklebur (Xanthium pennsylvanicum Wallr.) under different water stresses, prepared with mannitol solution, were examined in relation to gaseous factors. As the concentration of mannitol increased, germination was increasingly inhibited at a mode which was drawn by two straight lines having different slopes and meeting at an angle. One is a sharp line occurring at the lower concentrations of mannitol; the other is a gentle line occurring at higher concentrations of mannitol. The former reflected the growth response of axial tissues to mild water stress, whereas the latter reflected the growth response of cotyledonary tissues to severe water stress. The germination potential of cocklebur seeds increased with increasing temperature. Thus, the seeds were more resistant to water stress at higher than al lower temperatures. This increased germination potential under water stress resulted from the greater growth potential of axial tissues, but not cotyledonary tissues, at higher temperature. Increased O2 levels improved both the reduced axial and cotyledonary growth under water stress. Carbon dioxide predominantly enhanced axial growth under water stress, whereas C2H4 exclusively enhanced cotyledonary growth. Thus, these gases were effective in potentiating germination under water stress. When combined with each other, these gases caused more pronounced growth of the axial and cotyledonary tissues, leading to germination under more severe water stresses. Maximal axial and cotyledonary growth under water stress occurred in the simultaneous presence of CO2, C2H4 and O2, which allowed the germination at higher mannitol concentrations above 0.6 kmol m−3 From these results, it was suggested that cocklebur seeds would override water stress by depending upon both the Corresponding axial growth and the C2H4-responding cotyledonary growth.

    Notes: Summary.  We describe a patient with haemophilia A and factor VIII inhibitor who underwent surgical excision of a large pseudotumour in the left femoral region. Haemostasis was successfully maintained with bolus doses of recombinant factor VIIa at 2-h intervals and anti-fibrinolytic therapy, and the pseudotumour was removed. Subsequently, the dose interval was gradually prolonged to 8 h for a total of 18 days. Although a spontaneous haemorrhage was observed on postoperative day 8, haemostasis was achieved by reducing the dosage interval. No adverse event occurred during the course of treatment.

    Notes: Background Children with Henoch–Schonlein purpura (HSP) occasionally have allergic disease. We have previously shown that pranlukast hydrate was effective for purpura in HSP. Pranlukast hydrate is a leukotriene (LT) receptor antagonist; therefore, it is likely that LTs take part in the cause of HSP. Urinary leukotriene E4 (LTE4u) levels are a useful index of whole-body cysteinyl LT production in vivo. In this study, LTE4u was examined in children with HSP.Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between the level of LTE4u and the cause of HSP.Methods Eighteen HSP children (six boys and 12 girls) and six healthy children were enrolled.Results LTE4u levels in patients with HSP were significantly higher (P〈0.05) at the onset than those in healthy children. Four weeks therapy with pranlukast hydrate lowers LTE4u levels in patients with HSP (P〈0.05). There were no differences in LTE4u between the group of HSP patients with purpura nephritis and the group of HSP patients without purpura nephritis.Conclusion These results indicate that csyteinyl LTs may play a role in the pathophysiology of purpura in HSP.

    Notes: This in vitro study evaluated the wear effects of five posterior denture tooth materials on human enamel. The tooth specimen was cusp shaped and enamel specimen was formed as a 10 Ç 10 Ç 5 mm plate. All material-enamel combinations were tested using a machine designed to produce sliding contact 20 Ç 104 times at 60 cycles min–1 and a 4-mm sliding distance per stroke in the bucco-lingual direction under a load of 1 kg. Wear analysis was measured as the total height loss of each combination. In addition, the surface roughness (Ra) of each worn specimen was also evaluated. The least total height loss occurred with poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) enamel pair, and the greatest did with porcelain (Po)-enamel pair. The lowest compound Ra value was measured in high-strength resin (HR)-enamel pair, and the highest in Po-enamel pair. These findings suggest that the best combination is PMMA-enamel, and the poorest combination is Po-enamel.

    Notes: An I-bar clasp is a popular retainer for distal-extension removable partial dentures. However, there have been almost no evidence-based criteria on the mechanically preferable shape. The present study aimed to investigate the variations of dimension in I-bar clasps used in patients, and to clarify the effect of the variations on stiffness and stress of I-bar clasps by finite element analysis. Dimensions (thickness, width, taper, radius of curvature, length, relation to oral structures) of 23 I-bar clasps were measured. A three-dimensional finite element model was made for each measured I-bar clasp with vertical and horizontal straight sections connected with a curved section. A concentrated load of 5 N was applied at the lowest point of the tip that contacted the abutment in the buccal direction. Maximal equivalent stress and stiffness of each clasp were evaluated. The measured dimension, stiffness, and maximum stress showed wide variations. Mean stiffness was far from the proper one, and mean stress was near the proportional limit of Co–Cr alloy. Considering the stiffness and stresses in this study, only six clasps out of 23 were appropriate. These results suggest that evidence-based criteria of preferable shape of I-bar clasps should be determined.

    Notes: An I-bar clasp is one of the most popular direct retainers for distal-extension removable partial dentures. However, no adequate information is available on preferable shape as determined by biomechanics. This study aimed (1) to investigate, by finite element analysis (FEA), the dimensions and stress of I-bar clasps having the same stiffness, and (2) to estimate a mechanically preferable clasp design. Three-dimensional FEA models of I-bar clasps were created with vertical and horizontal straight sections connected by a curved section characterized by six parameters: thickness of the clasp tip, width of the clasp tip, radius of the curvature, horizontal distance between the base and the vertical axis, vertical dimension between the tip and the horizontal axis, and taper (change of width per unit length along the axis). Stress was calculated with a concentrated load of 5 N applied 2 mm from the tip of the clasp in the buccal direction. A thinner and wider clasp having an taper of 0·020–0·023 and radius of curvature of 2·75–3·00 showed less stress. The results suggest that such a shape might be the preferable I-bar clasp shape as biomechanical viewpoint.
